VOL. 1 ISSUE NO. 37 AUGUST 26, 1971 P. O. BOX 99466, SAN FRANCISCO, CA. 94109 PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY TELEPHONE (4151 861-6400 New Center The Society for Individual Rights announces that it will be moving to a new center in October of this year. The members of SIR refer to the new location as a Community Center since they view it as an opportunity to not only vastly expand the scope of their own activities, but also to provide facilities for the use of other gay organizations. The new building at 340 Ninth Street will provide SIR with approximately twice the space oow available in the old center. The number of offices will'more than double, and the auditorium area for meet- ings, dances, banquets, etc., is at least twice as large as that currently in use. There aresplans to install a new kit- chen to improve the facilities for serving meals such as the Senior Citizens luncheons, a regular Wednesday event at SIR. Also, there will be a new lounge with television set and pool table for those who wish to relax in an informal fashion. SIR members plan to design the auditorium area with fold- ing partitions so that the space could be divided up for several gay organizations to hold meet- ings or classes simultaneiously. Separate office space will also be provided for the Tavern Guild of San Francisco. Watch for the Grand Opening! The new move for SIR is a step up for the whole gay , community. 0 Rick Wins A fine dancer's body has he! Rick, the newest winner in the "Mr. San Francisco" prelimin- aries, enjoys swimming, ska- ting, and howling. Our Gemini also is enthralled with musicals and good drama and plays the guitar. Currently, he is a Dial-A- Model. The Cow Palace played host to this segment of the "Mr. San Francisco" run-offs on Thursday, Aug. 19th. SF Finalist Thom, currently a candidate in the "Mr. San Francisco" contest, was qualified as one of six finalists out of 25 en- trants in the "Groovy Guy" contest last Sat. night at the Los Angeles Sheraton Univer- sal Hotel. Thom is a bartender at the Round Up, also his sponsor at Los Angeles. The other five San Francisco applicants for the Groovey Guy contest were: Dick, Hunky Guy No. 10, sponsored by Page Onej Ken, Hunky Guy No. 13 and 1971’s first quar- ter Hunky Guy winner, spon- sored by Bob Damron Address Book; Dermis, the Alley Cat, and Gary, Town Squire. Miss Gayzette, also representing San Francisco, received honorable mention. General comments on the Groovy Guy event indicated that the contest had apparent- ly lost sight of the original policy of selecting groovy guys and concentration had switched to muscle builders exclusively. Congratulations on making the final eliminations, Thom. Gayzette is proud of all the guys who represented our Gay City. G Is Sought Under the auspices of the small activities committee of the Society for Individual Rights, an organization is be- ing formed for those members of our community who are on active duty with a branch of the Armed Services. For information call 781-1570. New Base For the convenience of customers, ADZ-Gayzette is opening a downtown adver- tising sales office. The office is located at 1005 Market St., Room 310 and begins opera- tion Mon. , Aug. 30th. Office hours will be from 1:00 to 7:00 pm, Mon. thru Fri. The new telephone number is (415 ) 861-6400. Memo WITH THIS ISSUE, ADZ-GAYZETTE RE- SUMES WEEKLY PUB- LICATION. CAEN HERB CAEN 8-24-71: .... "Plainclothes police in the Tenderloin, on the prowl for homosexuals, might want to know that their cover has been blown. Their "uniform" ------ long blonde hair, white pants, tennis shoes -----can be spotted a smile away by veteran cruisers, who mince rapidly in the opposite direc- tion . ... (Don't you DARE lower your voice to me, Bruce! )............." (Ed. note: Herbie, are you sure they're all blondes or is that merely your preference?) Hot Pants Match The Coits have announced an added feature for their bowl- ing tournament on Sunday, Sept. 12 at noon at Park Bowl; a "Hot Pants" contest with the winner to receive an appropri- ate prize. The cool attire is not mandatory for bowling en- trants but competition in the contest will be limited to per- sons bowling in the tournament. In additon to a plaque for each bowler on the team with the highest handicap score, individual cash prizes will be awarded to the following: highest handicap series: $50., $10. , and $7. 50 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Highest handicap game: $25., $10., and $7.50 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. The bowler with the highest scratch series will receive $15. and the highest scratch game wins $10.
