Finlandia Pharmacist, Jason Wilhelm, BSP, is passionate about health and the best ways to achieve well-being. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, he graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. During his 13 years as a drugstore pharmacist, he came to realize that truly helping people regain their health embraced more than the standard pharmacy model could provide.

With an interest in functional medicine, as well as respect for all forms of natural healing, Jason is now able to follow his passion for compounding—with comprehensive training in standard and sterile compounding under his belt.

In addition to helping others in their quest for wellness, Jason enjoys being healthy and � t himself and grew up playing “every sport that was available.” He currently keeps active with Cross� t, slow pitch and by running after his beloved dog, Dexter.

Most importantly, Jason enjoys interacting with Finlandia’s pharmacy customers and making sure they have all the information needed to bene� t from their medications. He loves answering questions concerning medications and health, so please feel free to ask away…

Finlandia has your health covered. Although best known for our natural remedies, we also operate a busy pharmacy dispensing conventional western medicines.

This means you can discuss your condition with our fully licensed pharmacist and perhaps pick up some helpful herbals or other health supplements while having your prescription � lled. It’s the best of both worlds.

Our conventional pharmacy also offers compounding services, so if your physician wishes you to have a drug blended into a transdermal cream, sub-lingual troche, suppository or lollipop, we are able to do this for you.

On-site compounding also means we can omit speci� c substances, such as lactose and other sugars, if they pose a problem for you. (Very few pharmacies offer on-site compounding due to its complexity and the time/experience needed to ensure it is executed properly.) Our modern facility also incorporates a sterile compounding room.

Allowing us to � ll your medical prescription means you can rest assured that you will receive expert service and advice on not just your medication, but also any health supplement or OTC medication you may be taking. Our pharmacist will take the time to check for, and advise you on, possible drug/supplement interactions and side effects that might affect your well being.

In addition to these melatonin formulas, our herbal dispensary can custom formulate a number of sleep aids using natural herbs.

Skin care formulasYouthful skin is beautiful skin! In response to your requests, our pharmacists have formulated a skin cream that will encourage a healthy, youthful exterior.

The cream contains Derma-Quinol (CoQ10), tocotrienol (a highly bio-active form of vitamin E) and hyaluronic acid—the skin’s own moisturizing component. We are also able to compound speci� c skin care formulas as requested by our health practitioners or customers.

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) involves the use of hormones that are identical to those manufactured naturally by the human body.

Bio-identical hormones are extracted from plants, including soy and yams, and are then processed pharmaceutically. When applied to the skin as a cream, inserted as a suppository, or taken orally, the body recognizes the hormones to be biologically identical to those it produces.

Natural hormone balance for womenIf you are a perimenopausal woman, or you have reached or passed menopause, you are likely noticing some of the changes that accompany reduced hormone levels. These include hot � ashes, night sweats, mood swings, temporary memory loss, sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness and irritation, depression, reduced libido (sex drive), and thinning skin and/or hair.

During perimenopause (the 10 or so years before menopause), during and following menopause, BHRT can be used to fully replicate the many functions of sex-hormones throughout the body, without the adverse effects commonly experienced with their synthetic counterparts.

Accompanying these changes are others that are not readily discernible, such as the increased risk of heart disease and bone thinning (osteoporosis).

Although many of our customers strongly

believe that Nature’s plan precludes the use of synthetic hormones to ease the transition through menopause, they have been willing to try BHRT since these formulations mimic the structure of the body’s natural hormones. With careful adjustment, BHRT can restore the feeling of well-being associated with a more youthful hormone pro� le and can signi� cantly ease the path through menopause.

Natural hormone balance for menJust like women, men experience hormonal shifts during midlife. A drop in testosterone can severely impact well-being, resulting in a lack of libido, erectile dysfunction (ED), weight gain, loss of muscle strength, development of breast tissue, lack of energy, and associated depression. Many men feel that their vital force has left them when they no longer feel the urge to compete at work, excel in sports, or seek out and enjoy physical intimacy. Reduced levels of male hormone may also increase blood sugar levels and osteoporosis.

Whereas women experience a relatively rapid depletion of hormones at menopause, male hormone levels decline over time. A man’s symptoms of hormone depletion are also more general and less obvious than a woman’s. Men who have experienced the symptoms associated with PADAM say that BHRT helped them recapture their youth and vigour, and all that they enjoyed in theiryounger years.

Salivary hormone testingAn assessment of your hormone levels can be made from sampling your saliva. Saliva testing measures the levels of hormones circulating in the bloodstream that remain free from serum-binding proteins, and can therefore be used by the cells. This form of hormone testing is believed by many practitioners to provide a more accurate measurement on which to base a balancing regimen and symptom control.

24-hour urine testingMore comprehensive than salivary hormone testing, 24-hour urine tests provide an excellent indication of average daily hormone production. Urinary hormones levels re� ect the body’s total output of a given hormone, and a wide range of hormones can be measured.
