VOL. 06 • N° 04AUGUST 2018
Summer is endingand it’s back toschool, a bittersweettime for many.
HATLEY CENTREROADOver the summer,the municipality has
kept busy. Important in vest ments havebeen made including major road workon Hatley Centre road and one of thelinks to Route 143 and North Hatleyvillage. The road work will haveincluded paving part of the road and theintersection with Lac road.
DUTIES ON TRANSFERS OF IMMOVABLESWith adoption of Bill 122, munici-palities may apply to the part of atransaction above $500 000, ratesabove the 1,5% allowed by the law forvalues exceeding $250 000 and up to amaximum of 3%. Canton de HatleyCouncil has decided not to increase this rate that would have affected agood number of transactions in themunicipality.
SHARING THE ROADWith the advent of the electric bicycleand the general popularity of cycling ingeneral, sharing the road has becomean important issue. The SAAQ remindsus that:
All road users have a duty,especially toward more vulnerableusers, to be careful and consideratewhen travelling on a public road.
Drivers of road vehicles have aduty to show extra care towardmore vulnerable users, such aspeople with reduced mobility,pedestrians and cyclists.
Too often, we forget to be patient andtolerant when we get behind the wheel.We are “in a hurry” by default. Sharing
the road forces us to be careful and toshow consideration to others.
PUBLIC SECURITYThis year the government adopted a by-law concerning alert and mobilisationprocedures and minimal protectionassistance to protect people and propertyin case of a disaster. What was once a recommendation has become anobligation. The by-law includes a dozenarticles including the following:
A local municipality must, at alltimes, be able to sound an alert andmobilize those designated by themunicipality.
For this reason, the Canton de Hatley hasput in place an automated alert system
and is contacting all residents to updatetheir contact information in case of adisaster or emergency measures.
Also, let me remind you that it isrecommended to keep an emergency kitcontaining everything your familyneeds to be autonomous for 72 hours in case of a disaster.
MASSAWIPPI RIVERIf you have not had the chance todiscover the Massawippi River bycanoe or kayak, I invite you to do so.The municipality has set up accesspoints on Kingdom road and in the Capelton mines sector. Obviously,you should proceed with caution.Check the conditions, wear a personalfloatation device and bring a soundsignaling device.
Have a great back-to school!

IDEAS FOR BETTER COMPOS TINGWITH THE BROWN BINNewspaper to the rescue!
- Use newspaper in your bin to coveryour food scraps and every time youput something in the bin;
- Put your food scraps on a newspaperor make into a bundle. Deposit inyour kitchen bin or directly in thebrown bin;
- Newspaper is useful to avoid gettingthe bin dirty. If you must use a bag,paper is best. A compostable bag isalso acceptable. Biodegradable bagsare not accepted as they contaminatethe compost.
Keep you compost frozen!If your freezer has space, you can putyour kitchen container directly in thefreezer until it is full. In that case put anewspaper at the bottom so thecompost doesn’t stick. Or you can onlyfreeze meat, fish and other things thatare smellier. You can freeze them innewspaper or a big ice cream or yogurtcontainer that you have recycled forthat purpose.
RIDESHARINGDifferent platforms exist forridesharing between municipalities.However covoiturage.ca offers theoption for short distances, for example between Canton de Hatley
and Sherbrooke. All you have to do isfill in the required information.
You may reduce the transportationcosts while reducing CO2 pollution.
You need to leave your vehicle at acommon meeting spot? The muni -cipality now offers a few parking spotsfor that purpose. Happy ridesharing.
DID YOU KNOW?It would take 5 planet earths for humanity if all women and men lived like we do in North America..
