Vol. 1 - No. 3 February 2009 C ELEBR A T ING A FRICA N A MERICA N H ERI T A GE M ONTH In This ISSUE Trailblazers of Education: Ileen Foley Page 3 Champions of education Page 4 Victoria’s team in Hollywood Page 8 A diamond in the rough Page 14 AND LOTS MORE! by BOBBY GLANTON SMITH The upshot of Barack Hussein Obama’s ascent to President of the United States is multi-faceted; it embodies the unpredictability of time and space and illuminates the possibilities. Simply put, he overcame impossible odds and produced unimaginable achievement. The 44th President of the United States is evidence that excellence, vision and timing are a recipe for astonishing human accom- plishment. The nearly 2 million people, from all walks of life, who pop- ulated the inauguration plat- form on January 20th sup- ports the notion that most Americans are ready for posi- tive change. What is so com- pelling about Barack Obama? Why has his clarion call for change captivated so many Americans? The diverse sup- port he received in the gener- al election suggests Americans are ready to move in a different direction as a nation. Indeed, his journey to the White House is an inter- esting saga that added all eth- nic groups along the way. In hindsight it becomes apparent that Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States because he possess the intellect, the char- acter and the vision required to lead in times like these. Growing up a bi-racial child and living in the Pacific Rim widened his view of the world. His educational pedigree, his superb organizational skills, and his capacity for process- ing data and diverse opinions allow him to think, plan and execute under extreme pres- sure. He excelled at Harvard academically but maintained a common touch. Most students with his aca- demic accomplishments, which included his tenure as Editor of the Harvard Law Review, ended up on Wall Street or working for a Fortune 500 company. Instead, Mr. Obama decided to use his talents at the com- munity level and starting a family with Michelle. Those years he spent as a communi- ty organizer proved invaluable in the course of becoming presidential material. Ironically, the Republicans mocked his community ser- vice and lived to regret doing so. McCain’s disconnect from everyday Americans and their day-to-day challenges could not be overcome by selecting Sarah Palin or his condescen- dence to ‘Joe the Plumber’. The road to the White House went through Middle America and that population didn’t drink from the same well as McCain and Palin this time around. The Obama journey to the White House intersected with my family in the state of Iowa. My aunt, the Honorable Willie Stevenson Glanton, is a pow- erful political figure in Iowa; she was the first African American elected to Iowa State Legislature and my late uncle, Luther Glanton, Jr., was the first African American Judge in the State of Iowa. When the candidates started arriving in Des Moines to solicit support for their candidacies they all wooed my Aunt Willie. She’s known the Clintons for years and Hillary was dev- astated when Aunt Willie announced she was endorsing Obama. Her endorsement was significant despite the fact that Iowa has a miniscule black population. She repre- sented a proven performer with the ability to cross the color line and get support from the majority community. And when I queried her about President Barack Hussein Obama – Change Has Come! See OBAMA, pg. 13 Contributed Photo Contributed Photo
