From The Rabbi’s Study...
Reclaiming The Lessons Of Shavuot In Our Daily Lives
In a few weeks we will be celebrating the festival of Shavuot. Shavuot is one of our most important holidays
because it celebrates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. It asks us to think about the role that Torah
plays in our daily lives. Unfortunately, between the end of the school year for families, the beginning of the
summer and the anticipation of the "Memorial Day" season bringing us closer to our beloved days on the
beach—Shavuot tends to get lost in the shuffle of our busy lives. The challenge is that when we let Shavuot slip through our
fingers and we do not make time to recognize, celebrate, and live out the values of this holiday, we miss an opportunity to
re-affirm and re-engage with the teachings and wisdom that are so central to our lives as Jews. Torah, literally means
"instruction" or "teaching." On Shavuot we are celebrating the teachings of our tradition and reminding ourselves to incorpo-
rate the central value of Torah study into our daily lives. Echoing the words of the v'ahavtah, on Shavuot we are to remember
that the words of Torah should always "be on our hearts" and that we are to "teach them to our children, speaking of them
when we are at home, when we travel, when we lie down and when we rise up (Deuteronomy 6)." On Shavuot we are to
remember the words of the sage Ben Bag Bag, who taught that when it comes to Torah study we are to:
Turn it and turn it; You will find everything in it. Scrutinize it, grow old and gray in it, do not depart
from it. There is no better portion in life than this (5:24).
"But we are too busy to study Torah." we say. "We wouldn't know where to start." we explain. "Torah study doesn't have
anything to say to us"—we wrongly assume, based on our recollections from a poor Hebrew school education many years
ago.
This year, I encourage you to use Shavuot as an opportunity to re-engage in some type of Jewish learning. On Tuesday
night, May 14th, we will be having a community Shavuot service (6:15), dinner and religious school graduation celebration
(7:30) combined with an evening of study (8:30-10:30) . We will explore the role that spirituality might play in our daily lives.
Please consider joining us. If you cannot make it, and even if you can, here are a list of ten different ways that you might
engage in the study of Torah this year. I encourage you to check each of them out, pick one place that seems to interest you
and get started.
1. Pick up the Torah and start reading. Start with one chapter each day and see where it takes you. Every-
one should own a copy of the Etz Hayyim Humash in their home as it is a wonderful resource.
2. Sign up for an adult education class at the Synagogue or in the community.
3. Sign up for a Jewish course on-line. The Jewish Theological Seminary is one institution that offers some
fabulous courses taught by Seminary scholars. You can also check out the American Jewish University,
Shalom Hartman Institute, The Conservative Yeshivah in Jerusalem, or Mechon Hadar in NY. Some of these
institutions offer courses on line as well. A list of additional resources can be found in the Rabbi's corner of
our website (www.torat-el.org).
4. Download a Jewish "app" onto your smart phone to study when you are commuting and encourage your
children and grandchildren to do the same for their iphone, ipad, etc... Do a google search and see what
you come up with.
5. Go to the bookstore and buy a Jewish book that looks interesting to you, bring it to the beach this summer,
and begin discussing it with family and friends.
6. Feel free to visit our library and check out some of our wonderful resources through our online library
catalog.
7. Come to Shabbat services and engage in our weekly Torah learning.
8. Come to Daily Minyan where we study for 5 minutes at the end of each service each day.
9. Write down a list of Jewish questions or topics that you have always wanted to learn about and think about
how to begin studying one of these topics. As always, I am happy to help you get started with this journey.
Feel free to call or e-mail me for any advice or to go out for breakfast, coffee or lunch so we can learn to-
gether.
10. Order the new publication: The Observant Life—The Wisdom of Conservative Judaism for Contemporary Jews.
This tremendous resource covers the Jewish opinion on many aspects of our daily lives.
There is no question that this is a tall order. You may end up with more questions than answers—but that is a good thing
because these questions will enrich your lives with wisdom in profound ways. A commitment to Jewish learning, a commit-
ment to receiving Torah in our lives, takes much dedication and can be an endless pursuit. But that should not be an excuse.
Instead, as we do with many things in life, we must each remember to take each lesson one at a time.
Each time we return the Torah to the ark we chant, "Etz Hayim He" and we are reminded that the Torah is a tree of life to us,
only if we hold onto it. This Shavuot let us remember to take hold of our tradition. Let us remember to cherish it, to study it,
and, most importantly, to live out its wisdom each and every day.
