10
Second collective Meeting was organised at Rarkhila Village. To stop trafficking and to
promote girls education and their protection, we had organised a collective meeting at Rarkhila
Village. District Judge, Additional Judge, Secretary of DLSA and Civil Judge, District administration,
Block Development officer were attended the meeting and gave information on schemes and laws
related prohibition of child marriage, child trafficking, women trafficking and child labour.
Child Trafficking and Child Marriage is anathema in Indian
Society. Many Children from poor, oppressed and ill-literate
families are soft target for trafficking and Child Marriage. It is
always a threat for children who live in such communities. In
last few months, Nilam’s life also came in the threat.
Fourteen year old girl Nilam Arya resides in Rarkhila
Village of District Almora India. She lost her mother when she
was very young. One and half year ago, her father also passed
away. After that, she started to live with her brother's family
but financially, his condition was very weak. Earlier we had also
sponsored Nilam's Education through small fellowship programme of VOC. In April 2015 she
enrolled in Class 7, but slowly-slowly her attendance rate was reduced. Due to the domestic work
and care of her brother's children, she had drop out from school.
AMAN celebrated the International Social Justice Day on 20 February 2016, in which
women groups from VOC Project villages participated. Here the president of women group of
Rarkhila village had shared that Nilam was drop out from school and her brother fixed her
marriage. We had tried to investigate the issue and observed that the bride money is the major
cause for fixing her marriage. It was the child trafficking issue which happened in the name of
marriage. Nilam and her family did not know about the family and the person whom she was
going to be married. Only some middle men knew about them. It was secret because child
marriage is an offence in Indian legal System.
VOC Volunteers met to Nilam and her brother also. We counselled her family members to
withdraw the decision of Nilam’s Marriage. Nilam wished to continue her education. We saw that
her family condition was not favourable to overall development of Nilam. VOC team discussed this
issue with district legal Service Authority Almora. With their support we rescued this girl and
admitted her in Government girl shelter home Almora. Now the Nilam reside in Shelter home and
she also get the admission in 8th standard at girls Inter College and her all living and education
expenses are bearing by home.
Finally, she came out form threat, and now she is looking for new dimension of life.
VIMARSH has formed separate groups for adolescent girls in project area. Organisation has
been conducting 30 regular meetings with these groups. Girl Education, Gender Discrimination,
Reproductive health, hygiene issues during menstruation period, Nutrition were the main topics of
monthly discussion. In each meeting average 12 girls are being participated

which more than 600 women participated and raised the voice of women and taken the
