BBOT Hosts Roundtable with Minister of State for Democratic Reform

RRSP Basics: Be in the knowabout retirement savings

It’s the time of year that many of usstart to think about RRSP contributionsand how these can help us to lower ouroverall income tax bill. What plans haveyou made to reduce your taxable income?

Registered Retirement Savings Plans(RRSPs) workby deductingthe amount youcontribute fromyour income, therefore loweringthe overall tax youowe. Tax on RRSPgrowth is deferreduntil the money iswithdrawn.

AdvantagesBesides the

immediate tax savings, RRSPs also workas a way to defer taxes until you take themout at a later date. As most people tend

to have less income following retirement, this allows for the money to be withdrawnand less taxes to be paid.

Who can contribute? As long as you’re employed and

expect to be in a lower tax bracket whenyou retire, RRSPs will be beneficial to you.

What if I don’t have a lot of moneyfor a RRSP?

It’s all about making the most ofwhat you have. Start small with regularcontributions and watch your savingsgrow, especially when taking compoundinterest into account. RRSP loans whichcan be paid off quickly can also workwell. One strategy would be to take theproceeds of your tax refund and put ittowards the balance of the loan. MostRRSP loans can also be taken out withfairly attractive interest rates.

Are TFSAs better than RRSPs?A TFSA or Tax-Free Savings Account

is a great tool to complement any savingsstrategy. Similar to a RRSP, a TFSA’sunused contribution room can be carriedforward to future years. In certainsituations, a TFSA may be more attractive

as they are more flexible than RRSPs.For example, a university graduate maystart out with a lower tax bracket andfind greater benefit with TFSAs. As theyadvance in their career, the benefit maybe greater from RRSP contributionswhen their income is higher.

Remember, everyone’s situationis different based on their plans andneeds. Whether it’s a TFSA or RRSP, acomprehensive financial review fromG&F can help you build the right plan orkeep your objectives on track.

RRSP Quick FactsYour RRSP Contribution Limit is

18% of your previous year’s income up to$22,450. This year’s RRSP Contributiondeadline is February 29, 2012.
