I am not sure if it is confidence, subject matter expertise, a desire to prove ourselves, or a combination of all three, but this is certainly an area that is very familiar to many veterans and their families.” The friendly atmosphere, including Butler Passed Hors D’oeuvres, was conducive for meeting, greeting and networking and for Business Professionals to build business relationships and become acquainted with AUSA members and the AUSA mission.

The Chapel of Four Chaplains hosted its 50th Annual Four Chaplains Day Awards Banquet at the Sheraton Philadelphia Society Hill Hotel, Philadelphia, PA. West, Army Surgeon General and CG of the US Army Medical Command. The 2018 Humanitarian of the Year Award was presented to Ms Cass Forkin, Chairwoman of the Board of the Twilight Wish Foundation and national public speaker. Also recognized at the banquet was 95 year old (former Army PVT) Alexander Horanzy, a Pearl Harbor survivor. On 23 Jan 1943, the USAT Dorchester left New York Harbor bound for Greenland with 902 passengers on board. On 3 Feb 1943, a torpedo from a German submarine struck the starboard side. In about 20 minutes, the ship was lost under the frigid sea leaving only about 230 survivors. After the torpedo hit, four Chaplains of different faiths (Methodist Minister, Rabbi, Roman Catholic Priest and Reformed Church in America Minister) helped other passengers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. A survivor wrote, “As I swam away from the ship, I looked back. The flares had lighted everything. The bow came up high and she slid under. The last thing I saw, the four chaplains were up there praying for the safety of the men. They had done everything they could. I did not see them again. They themselves did not have a chance without their life jackets.” On 19 Dec 1944, the four Chaplains were posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross. On 14 Jul 1960, a unanimous act of Congress authorized a special medal (the Four Chaplains’ Medal) which has the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor. These medals were presented posthumously to the next of kin of each of the four Chaplains on 18 Jan 1961. In 1988, a unanimous act of Congress established February 3 as the annual “Four Chaplains Day.”

The Princeton Battlefield Society hosted a Celebration of George Washington's 286th Birthday at the Princeton Friends School, Princeton, NJ. A gathering of over 90 history enthusiasts were in attendance. Representing the AUSA Monmouth Chapter was Mr Charles Seal, Newsletter Editor. The featured speaker was Mr Edward G. Lengel, PhD, author and Chief Historian for the White House Historical Association who presented a lecture entitled “George Washington's Finest Hour: Trenton & Princeton 1776 - 1777”. The lecture was artfully presented in story-telling fashion which placed the audience along side Washington as he methodically outwitted the British during the “Ten Crucial Days (25 Dec 1776 - 03 Jan 1777)” of America's Revolutionary War. Historians believe that the mere presence of the larger-than-life figure of George Washington on the battlefield was the difference between victory and defeat. As the British had now lost control of New Jersey, the Americans now believed that they could win the war. The battles of Trenton and Princeton were a boost to the morale of both the Continental Army and the American citizens which led to a surge of new recruits joining the Continental Army in the spring.

He was known as the “Veto President” using the power of the Veto more than all the presidents before him combined. He was generally known as an honest man who worked hard and tried to act independently as president. According to two of Cleveland’s biographers, his last words were, “I have tried so hard to do right.” Following his retirement from politics, President Cleveland lived in Princeton, NJ and was a trustee of Princeton University until his death in 1908 at the age of 71.

216th Celebration of the Founding of the United States Military Academy at West PointMarch 24, 2018

COL (R) Tony Smith, President of the West Point Society of New Jersey, a Community Partner of the AUSA Monmouth Chapter, hosted the 216th Celebration of the Founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point at the Beacon Hill Country Club, Atlantic Highlands, NJ. The Guest Speaker was LTG (R) Guy C. Swan III, AUSA VP Education and West Point Graduate, Class of 1976. Approximately 125 participants attended the Celebration including AUSA Monmouth Chapter President COL (R) Samuel Fuoco with wife Frances; Treasurer LTC (R) Richard Gaudio with wife Laurel; VP Programs Ms Kit Roache with husband Peter and Secretary Ms Ellie Smith with husband Tony. The history of the United States Military Academy can be traced to fortifications constructed on the West Point of the Hudson River during the American Revolutionary War in 1778. The harsh winter of 1777–1778 froze the Hudson River, allowing elements of the Connecticut militia to march westward across the river. They first occupied West Point on 27 January 1778, making it the longest continually occupied post in the United States. George Washington considered West Point to be the most important military position in America, stationing his headquarters there in 1779. During his presidency, George Washington realized a need for a national military academy to teach the art and science of war, but his Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson argued that there was no provision in the Constitution that allowed for the creation of a military academy. Despite his earlier misgivings, when Jefferson became president, he called for and signed legislation establishing a "Corps of Engineers" which "shall be stationed at West Point and constitute a Military Academy" on 16 March 1802.

Princeton Battlefield, Spring Clean-upMarch 31, 2018Representing the AUSA Monmouth Chapter, Newsletter Editor Mr Charles Seal attended the Spring Clean-up of the Princeton Battlefield, Princeton, NJ that was co-sponsored by the Princeton Battlefield Society, the Sierra Club and the Civil War Trust. Administering this event were Ms Kip Cherry, Princeton Battlefield Society President; Mr Roger Williams, Princeton Battlefield Society Secretary and Mr Robert Meyer, President of the NJ Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. A group of over 60 men, women and children enjoyed a sunny afternoon of brush removal and general clean-up of the Princeton Battlefield, concentrating on the grounds surrounding the Thomas Clarke House. Each participant received a free “Preserving American History Park Day” T-shirt. George Washington's victory at Princeton on January 3, 1777, like that of Trenton one week earlier, had an overwhelming effect on the American cause. It heartened the people of all the states with hopes of ultimate complete success. Moreover, it strengthened the perception of Washington both at home and abroad and bolstered his authority. The twin victories at Trenton and Princeton came at a period when the spirits of the American people had reached a dangerously low ebb, when another defeat might have been fatal to the cause of Independence. With success at the end of 1776, the situation brightened and from every corner militiamen flocked to the colors to fill the ranks of the new Continental Army. The scene of the heaviest fighting in the battle is preserved in the 681 acre Princeton Battlefield State Park on the southern outskirts of Princeton, New Jersey.
