Abstract prints, such as the like of the

The Significance of Fashion Trends in Accessories
By Domenique Hogan
Everyone wants to know - how can I be fashionable in a world where fashion is such a constantly changing presence? This is a valid question which should get us thinking. Fashion has certainly changed through the years, and keeping up with the ever-changing trends is the goal of many fashion-savvy people. This is why it is important to understand the significance and progress of clothing trends in the fashion world – but clothes are not the only items that have been altered by fashion culture. Accessories are also im-portant. Accessories have not only changed in de-sign, shape, and size; but the role that accessories now play in an outfit has grown as well. Accessories from necklaces to rings to hairpieces have all be-come an integral part in creating a signature look. Jewelry such as bracelets, necklaces, and rings have all changed dramatically, moving in the direction from a delicate, feminine style to a bold, colorful style. Though some accessories are simple, merely accentuating another point of the outfit, it is an up-and-coming trend for jewelry to be the central piece of an outfit. Bold pieces with large sized jewels and bright colors have started to change the ways in which women convey their femininity. Sparkle and layers in jewelry pieces are also new trends that have been utilized. The following attributes address ways in which jewelry and accessories have evolved to play an enhanced role in an outfit.
Size Bigger jewelry = bolder statement! In order to show that we know what is fashionable, we have to show that we are not afraid to be fresh and take on some daring accessories. Wearing larger jewelry indicates confidence in yourself. This is why femininity has not slipped away even though fashion jewelry has moved away from small and deli-cate. Size also declares that jewelry is vital to a fashionable outfit. Acces-sories are not fading away by com-ing smaller and less noticeable; rather, the opposite is true! Fashion jewelry has increased in size, and so has its role in an outfit.
Color If we trace back to pieces of the past, we can see that small, single colored gemstones within metal settings were fashion-forward. In 2010, col-ors are BOLD! Neons and brights are show-stoppers in an outfit. Combin-ing colors in fashion jewelry is popu-lar, creating a unique color palette that may be worn in different outfits. By using colors in accessories that are this noticeable, it is easy to make a statement all your own. Flashy, bright colors bring attention to the wearer, and as you know, these ac-cessories are used to tie together an outfit to make it an artistic master-piece!
Material The materials that comprise fashion jewelry have dramatically changed. Jewelry has moved from metal and gemstone to fabric and plastic. Obvi-ously, metal and gemstone is still a great presence in fashion jewelry; however, we have seen an increase in the production of large, shiny, plastic gems on fabricated materials. Stone is also becoming increasingly popular as a substitute for gemstones. In ear-rings and hairpieces, feathers and tulle have made an appearance, pro-viding different textures and dimen-
Accessories Built In An innovative concept that I have run
across in my shopping ventures in-
cludes that of jewelry built into cloth-
ing. It has become quite popular to
include necklaces or large neckpieces
to add detail and glam to a top! This
idea is so fascinating because it di-
rectly illustrates the importance of
fashion jewelry in an outfit. Fashion
designers have recognized that the
significance of jewelry is greater and
that accessories should play a lead-
ing role in the work of an outfit. This
idea translates to buyers, who then
bring about the trend. Through this
design, designers are offering a great
look for less time, money, and effort.
This saves the shopper and I predict
that it will be a popular trend
throughout the rest of the year!
Length
The length of an accessory is di-rectly proportional to its increased importance in an ensemble. Looking back, necklaces rarely extended onto clothes. These pieces were kept a lot closer to the throat and neckline. Chocker style necklaces were a popular choice in the 90’s, for exam-ple. Now, we have necklaces that are 36 inches long, which can be twisted, looped, and folded to create a layered effect. The presence of such lengthy pieces demonstrates a heightened significance in a fashion-able look.

2010 bfc industry panel connecting business & fashion By Alanna McGuiggan
On April 8th, 2010, the Bentley Fashion Consultants held their annual
fashion industry panel. This year, four unique individuals involved in the
fashion world shared their experience and advice with Bentley stu-
dents. These panelists showed that there is in fact a correlation be-
tween business and fashion, proving that a Bentley University degree
will in fact be beneficial for success in the fashion industry!
Barbizon Modeling & Acting
Melissa from Barbizon Modeling &
Acting was one of the four panelists
featured at this BFC event. A recent
graduate of Manhattan College,
Melissa was a business major who
has found success in the fashion
industry since graduating. Though
Melissa is new to Barbizon, she has
already been promoted to direct her
own school, and emphasized the
importance of personality for any
career. Melissa highly encouraged
panel attendees to obtain internships
while they were in college, saying
that this was a crucial aspect for
success in the fashion industry.
The Tannery
A second panelist involved in this BFC
event was Brittney Rothweiler, who
works as a buyer for the Tannery,
which is a lifestyle retailer located in
Boston and Cambridge. Rothweiler,
who double majored in economics
and art at Lafayette College, ensured
that a fashion major is not necessary
for success in this industry. Instead,
Rothweiler stressed the importance of
internships for college students.
Rothweiler completed a variety of
internships during her time at
Lafayette, working at Revlon’s
European headquarters in London, as
well as Miss Sixty in New York City and
Catherine Malandrino’s Soho store.
The connections and experience
Rothweiler gained from these
internships helped her to attain her
current position as a buyer for the
Tannery. From Rothweiler’s
commentary at this panel, it was
incredibly evident that she loves her
job at the Tannery, and her com-
ments on the fashion industry provided
valuable advice for Bentley students
considering a career in the fashion
realm. Bentley Students Discuss Fashion with
Industry Panelist Melissa of Barbizon
Panelists Melissa (Barbizon), Brittney (The Tannery) and Samantha (9tailors)
9tailors
Samantha Shih, the CEO of 9tailors, also participated in the BFC Fashion In-
dustry Panel. 9tailors is a custom tailoring company located in Boston that
has grown tremendously since it was founded by Shih. This panelist ob-
tained a degree in management consulting from Brown University, and
strongly believes her business knowledge has helped her to succeed in de-
veloping her tailoring company. Shih compared 9tailors to “Build-a-Bear for
your clothing,” and her explanation of her company’s progression showed
that business skills will be incredibly beneficial no matter what type of ca-
reer Bentley students pursue after graduation. During the panel, Shih consis-
tently emphasized the importance of professionalism in any career or intern-
ship, noting that it will most definitely be beneficial for students’ success.
Adireé Fashion Agency
Panelist Michelle Addo is a current senior at Bentley University and the presi-
dent of the Bentley Fashion Consultants. Addo is an intern with Adireé Fash-
ion Agency, which was founded by Adiat Disu, a graduate of Bentley Uni-
versity who founded the Bentley Fashion Consultants. Disu’s company is lo-
cated in New York and focuses on fashion event production, organization
and consulting. Addo’s internship showed panel attendees that the con-
nections one makes during their time at Bentley can help determine their
level of success later on in life, and also proved that professionalism and
strong work ethics are an asset in the fashion industry.

We all know that students are on strict budgets, but every beauty queen needs to restock her makeup supply for the spring season. You should consider shopping Eyes, Lips,
Face brand makeup, where everything is $1.00, and shipping is free if you buy $75.00 worth of merchandise. Think about how many lip glosses and eye shadows that would be! E.l.f
already has a small following on Bentley campus, where girls usually get a group of friends together to shop and save on the shipping cost. Although any business-savvy Bentley
student would be skeptical about the quality of dollar-a-pop makeup, the e.l.f website offers rating on every product
as determined by its customers. The website also sells Sugarkiss and Studio brand makeup, which could go for
slightly more than a dollar. It offers brushes and other ap-plication tools, which could run for more as well. Also, the
website offers mineral makeup, which includes Mineral Eyeliner that costs as little as $3.00. Check it out at
eyeslipsface.com.
