Introduction

Operating safety

H Operating safetyt

Warning GPlease devote your attention first and fore-most to the traffic situation you are in. While the system permits hands-free phone operation, attention to traffic may be divert-ed not only by physical operation of a phone, but also by the distraction of a phone conversation while driving. As such, for safety reasons, we encourage the driver to stop the vehicle in a safe place before an-swering or placing a phone call.

Bear in mind that at a speed of just 30 mph (approximately 50 km/h), your car covers a distance of 44 feet (approximately 14 m) every second.

Warning GFor safety reasons, you should only select a destination when the vehicle is stationary. When the vehicle is in motion, a passenger should enter the destination on the COMAND head unit.

Do not watch display screen or operate keys while the vehicle is in motion - let voice in-structions guide you. Stop at a safe place lo-cation before watching display screens to select line numbers, using keys or making corrections.

Traffic regulations always have priority over any route recommendations given.

Bear in mind that at a speed of just 30 mph (approximately 50 km/h), your car covers a distance of 44 feet (approximately 14 m) ev-ery second.

The route calculated by COMAND is a rec-ommendation on how to best reach your se-lected destination.

During route guidance, you will not receive information on:

O Traffic lights,

O Stop and yield signs,

O Parking or stopping zones,

O One-way streets,

O Narrow bridges, or

O other traffic regulation data.

You should therefore always strictly observe traffic regulations while driving. Drive care-fully and always obey traffic laws and road signs, even if they contradict COMAND in-structions.

!Please do not use the Voice Control System in an emergency, as the tone of your voice may change in a stressful situation. This could cause a delay in completing your phone call in a timely manner.

Getting started

Introduction

H IntroductionThe Voice Control System gives you the ca-pability to control the following systems on your vehicle using spoken commands:

O Telephone*

O Navigation*

O Address book

O Audio (radio, CD changer*, single CD player and cassette player)

You control these systems using spoken commands. Moreover, controls such as the operating lever and buttons on the multi-function steering wheel (e page10) allow you to keep your hands on the steering wheel.

The command vocabulary consists of approximately200 ready to use phrases. The Voice Control System recognizes com-mands and number sequences, irrespective of the speaker.

The commands and digit sequences can be spoken without pausing between the indi-vidual words. If an unavailable or incorrect command is used, the Voice Control Sys-tem will prompt you for a new command by asking “Please repeat” or announcing “De-vice not available”.

In order to provide for a safe and comfort-able dialog, the Voice Control System ac-knowledges important commands.

9

Getting started

Introduction

The Voice Control commands can be cate-gorized as:

O Global Commands

These are commands always available to you as soon as the Voice Control Sys-tem is activated (for example “Help” commands).

O Local Commands

These are commands available only for the currently active system (for example commands to control the CD player).

The local commands always refer to the currently active system shown in the dis-play.

If, for example, you listen to the radio while the telephone system is active on the dis-play, you have to switch to the radio using the command “Radio” before you can oper-ate the radio.

Practical hints

What to do if...

O The Voice Control System should only be operated by the driver as the micro-phone is geared to the driver side.

O Speak the commands in a continuous manner using a normal tone.

Speaking unclear, too loud or too soft can result in the inability of the Voice Control System to recognize or to un-derstand your commands.

O External or internal noise may affect the performance of the Voice Control Sys-tem. Close all windows and sliding/pop-up roof* to reduce external noise level. Lower the fan speed of the climate con-trol to reduce internal noise levels.

Entering digits

O Digits from “Zero” to “Nine” may be used.

O Speaking phone numbers in digit blocks of 3 to 5 digits has proven a very reliable method for the input of phone numbers.

Voice Control does not recognize commands

Preferences

Individualization

H Individualization Individualization allows you to train the voice control system to your voice and im-prove the system’s recognition of entries and commands you speak.

Individualization consists of two parts:

O Numbers

O Commands

Individualization done by a user will not im-pact the systems’ recognition perfor-mance of other users.

You can activate individualization in the COMAND system settings (see separate COMAND operating instructions). A dialog and screen displays will guide you through the individualization process.

The system can be reset to the factory set-tings at any time.

iYou may wish to complete only a por-tion of the individualization process.

Completing the numbers portion alone may result in an improved recognition rate.

Individualization can be exited at any time. The data trained, however, will only be retained if a given individualiza-tion portion is completed and the data is stored when prompted to do so by the system.

!

Individualization can only be performed with the vehicle standing still.
