March/April 2019 Every year Remodeling Magazine surveys hundreds of contractors, realtors, and appraisers from major cities across the country, compiling data to determine the cost of various types of remodeling projects and their impact on the resale value of homes. The goal is to quantify the payback on money spent on improvements. The cost-value ratio expresses resale value as a percentage of construction cost. When cost and value are equal, the ratio is 100%; when cost is higher than value, the ratio is less than 100%; when value is higher than cost, the ratio exceeds 100%. Some people interpret a less-than-100% return on investment as a reason not to remodel, but it’s important to consider other factors as well. If your $50,000 kitchen makeover justifies raising your selling price by $32,200 (a 64.4% value-to-cost ratio), effectively you’ve paid 36 cents on the dollar ($17,800) for new cabinets, countertops, appliances, etc., all of which will presumably improve your quality of life over the duration of your stay in the house. Moreover, energy-efficient upgrades in building materials generally result in lower utility bills. Finally, the $32,200 recouped at the time of resale is normally tax-free. Nationally, the 2019 Cost vs. Value report reflects the robust market that the remodeling industry has enjoyed over the past year. All projects covered in the report show an increase in value over last year. While the percentage of costs recouped are trending downward for all of the replacement projects (windows, doors, siding and roofing) covered by Cost vs. Value, this change primarily reflects the sharp increase in material costs over the past summer. Material costs tend to comprise a greater proportion of replacement projects compared with larger indoor remodels, which have a higher percentage of labor costs. This increase was largely provoked by trade tariffs and uncertainty in the commodity markets Remodeling Magazine’s 2019 Cost vs. Value Report Mid-range Projec ts Bathroom Addition Bathroom Remodel Minor Kitchen Remodel Major Kitchen Remodel Roofing Replacement Entr y Door Replacement Window Replacement Garage Door Replacement Upsc ale Projects Bathroom Addition Bathroom Remodel Minor Kitchen Remodel Grand Entrance (fiberglass) Master Suite Addition Roofing Relacement (metal) Window Stone Veneer 61.2 % 66.2 % 73.5 % 49.9 % 63.7 % 67.8 % 72.4 % 102.8% 60.0 % 66.0% 44.6 % 59.5 % 72.5 % 54.0 % 63.9 % 57.8 % Cost Recouped Cost Recouped © 2019 Hanley Wood, LLC. Just for Laughs…

One day at a local café, a woman suddenly called out, "My daughter’s choking! She swallowed a nickel! Please! Anyone! Help!"

Immediately a man at a nearby table rushed over, wrapped his arms around her and squeezed. Out popped the nickel.

The man returned to his table as if nothing had happened.

"Thank you!" the mother cried. "Tell me, are you a doctor?"

"No," the man replied. "I work for the IRS."

Chose Screens over TreesIt takes 500,000 trees to produce the paper needed for Sunday's newspapers each week. But there's no need for eco-aware individuals to forgo the in-depth environmental reporting that can be found in newspapers. Reading mostly online is the obvious green alternative. If reading a real paper is your thing, consider reducing your subscription to a weekend or Sunday-only format. Don't forget to recycle when you're done — recycling every newspaper that gets printed would save 250 million trees per year.

10 Worst Smog Cities in AmericaAfter more than 50 years, the Clean Air Act still helps clean up air pollution in much of the nation. But about four in 10 Americans still live in areas with unhealthy air. This can make it hard to breathe. It also makes many health issues, such as asthma, lung cancer, heart attacks, and strokes, more likely. Here’s the American Lung Association's current top 10 smog cities:

The City of Angels once again takes the No. 1 spot for unhealthy air. But it’s making strides. 2018 saw the reached lowest number of bad ozone days ever reported. Laws that lower emissions from power plants, cars, and trucks get the credit.
