SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595) May 26 In a shop near the Va can, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent Eng-lish and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal por-trait, when pressed, ac vated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve le the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American
asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been mas-sacred on Saint Peter’s steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent con-fession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recrea on and devo on in a joyful atmos-phere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin improving Church and world by changing our-selves with unfailing joy.
YÜÉÅ g{x ctáàÉÜËá Wxá~ * A er the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three mes what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Chris an home, and I wanted to stay with you guys." * I had been teaching my three-year old daughter, Caitlin, the Lord's Prayer for several evenings at bed me, she would repeat a er me the lines from the prayer. Finally, she decid-ed to go solo. I listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end of the prayer: "Lead us not into tempta-on," she prayed, "but deliver us some E-mail.
* One par cular four-year-old prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our bas-kets." * A Sunday school teacher asked her children, as they were on the way to church service, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?" One bright li le girl replied, "Because people are sleeping." * Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother Joel were si ng together in church. Joel giggled, sang, and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had had enough. "You're not supposed to talk out loud in church." "Why? Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked. Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, "See those two men standing by the door? They're hushers." * A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were si ng here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait. Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!" * A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. "Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked. "He died and went to Heaven," the Dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, "Did God throw him back down?" #2 – Timmy had been misbehaving in children’s church ser-vice and was isolated from the other children for me-out. A er awhile he emerged and informed his teacher that he had thought it over and then prayed about it. “Fine,” said his pleased teacher. “If you ask God to help you not to misbehave, He will help you.” “Oh, I didn’t ask Him that,” said Timmy. “I asked Him to help you put up with me.” #3 – A er receiving a mean-spirited le er from one of his members, Pastor Bob went into the church office and dictat-ed the following to his secretary: “The enclosed le er arrived on my desk a few days ago. I am sending it to you because I think you ought to know that some idiot is sending out le ers over your signature. Cordi-ally…” Fr. Murphy
Dear Parishioners, It was so good to see many of our parishioners back in the pews last weekend. As I had predicted, I knew many s ll would stay away due to age and health concerns. One thing was quite evident at all the masses. Prac cally everyone came and early and was ready for mass, and no one came late for mass. That surprised me! I appreciate all who those cooperated with the protocols that the diocese imposed up-on all the churches. I realize not everyone appreciated hav-ing to wear a mask, but please remember that this is to keep you and others safe. Many of our parish ministries are either in a holding pa ern and have decided to wait un l this coming Fall to start up again. We believe that by the month of June we should be returning to some form of normalcy. This means using the Marian Hall and the Parish Office for the usual gath-erings. Here are some important updates regarding sacraments for our children and adults: First Holy Communion has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 14th at the 9:30 a.m. mass. Confirma on will occur on Saturday, June 13th at St. Anasta-sia Parish. Our teenagers will be joining those at St. Anasta-sia for the sacrament. The Confirma on Mass will begin at noon. Also, we have two men and two women who will be ini ated into the Catholic Church. This will take place on Sunday, June 21st at the 11 a.m. mass. This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord into heaven. This feast day reminds us of our eternal reward of paradise with God, the angels, the Virgin Mary, the saints and all those who have won the crown of everlas ng life. Hope of heaven is the theme of this celebra-on. Christ went into heaven a er spending 40 days with His
disciples on earth a er His glorious resurrec on. He made it clear that He would be with us always un l the end of me. We know He has been amongst us in a very special way – The Holy Eucharist. This sacrament is a foretaste of the heavenly banquet that awaits all of God’s children who run the race and get to the finish line with faith and love in Christ. And now some funnies: #1 – Some funnies that kids say about religion: *A li le boy was overheard, praying: "Lord, if you can't make me a be er boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good me like I am." * A Sunday school class was studying the Ten Command-ments. They were ready to discuss the last one. The teacher asked if anyone could tell her what it was. Susie raised her hand, stood tall, and quoted, "Thou shall not take the covers off the neighbor's wife."

will resume at a later date.
DIVINE MERCY SAID: "...Souls that make an appeal to My mercy delight Me. To such souls I grant even more graces than they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion, but on the contrary, I jus fy him in My unfathomable and inscrutable mercy. Write: before I come as a just Judge, I first open wide the door of My mercy. He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My jus ce..." (St. Faus na Diary, 1146)

WALKING WITH PURPOSE Women’s Scripture Study The study will con nue as God’s truth con nues. Seeking your Trust in God‘s ming. We walk with His Purpose. Praying for an end to the Pandemic. Hoping for a start up in September.
“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION There is a deligh ul character in the original Dr. Doli le Ta-les called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two iden -cal halves, with a head at each end. No ma er which direc-on the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the oth-
er is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mis-sion. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Ma hew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to bap ze. He also tells them, “I am with you always, un l the end of the age” (Ma hew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final des ny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory.
He was li ed up, and a cloud took him from their sight. — Acts 1:9
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today’s celebra on varies from place to place. In some parts of the United States, people gather for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while other places celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. Several years ago, regions of bishops were permi ed to decide whether to retain Ascension Day on Thursday, the for eth day a er Easter, or to move the celebra on to the nearest Sunday. This new flexibility in the Chris an calendar has to do with the desire to gather the Church to celebrate its central feasts fully, and with the Eucharist. Increasingly, as priests serve remote and sca ered parishes, this is not always possible mid‐week. The Ascension is a key moment for grasping what life in Christ is all about. It is not about a departure, but rather a plan for presence. We who are nourished by the Lord’s body and blood in the Eucharist are transformed to be his abiding presence in the world. That is a truth so worth celebra ng that we can adjust our calendar in order that the fullest possible gathering of the Church can be achieved.
