The N I A A - driving Zimbabwe’s vibrant arts into the future

Over a century ago, our founders came together to establish The Society for the Advancement of Music and Art in Bulawayo. This society is now called the National Institute of Allied Arts (NIAA) and its aim is to nuture, maintain and grow all art forms over generations to come.

Following the �irst one day festival in May 1913, the NIAA has stewarded, nurtured and expanded its orbit becoming the well-oiled, lively and creative hub that it is today. Through the NIAA provision of skills, structures and spaces, many young people have �ine-tuned their artistic skills, discovered their talents, found their focus and developed the discipline needed to become tomorrow’s artists.

The sheer scope of today’s NIAA events and volume of entrants, require many months of planning and much dedicated work by many volunteers. Furthermore, without the generous assistance of our valued corporate sponsors, these festivals would not survive.

The Institute warmly thanks MASHONALAND HOLDINGS and THE BRITISH COUNCIL for their on-going support of the Eisteddfod .

We would also thank the ASSOCIATION OF TRUST SCHOOLS for their continued support of all our endeavours, and the volunteers for their hard work.

Meet our Adjudicators

Corinne Marsh, Zimbabwean-born and UK-based pianist, has worked as an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) since July 2000, and consequently travels extensively around the United Kingdom and internationally.Corinne received her early musical training in Harare at the Zimbabwe College of Music, studying piano and oboe with Jeanette Micklem and the late Neil Chapman. She won numerous awards and scholarships, including the Young Musician of the Year when she played Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Leningrad Chamber and Harare City Orchestras. Corinne also took part in several masterclasses.Miss Marsh went on to gain Licentiate Diplomas from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in both piano teaching and performance. On the strength of her achievements, she was awarded the coveted ABRSM scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. (This scholarship is only awarded once every two years to a musician from any African country, excluding South Africa). Whilst at the Academy, Corinne studied piano performance and oboe with a number of distinguished musicians, and later graduated with two LRAM diplomas in piano and oboe teaching, as well as gaining the Professional Piano Performance Certi�icate with Honours.She has performed regularly in orchestras as well as in solo recitals, concertos, chamber music ensembles and as an accompanist of both instrumentalists and singers throughout Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom and internationally. She has expanded her talent to include music in the traditional jazz idiom, now also playing tenor and soprano saxophones. Corinne has also enjoyed a successful teaching career as Head of Keyboard at Downe House School where she worked for eleven years. Prior to this, she taught piano and oboe in a number of schools in Knightsbridge and Holland Park, London.

André Serfontein was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He is a very popular adjudicator and has appeared at 32 different eisteddfodau and Music Festivals throughout southern Africa. He is on the panel of Examiners for the Practical Music Examinations of the University of South Africa. Since 2015 he has served on the Panel of Judges for the Primary School Choir Competition “Sing in Harmonie” presented by kykNET in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape that was televised nationally. He was a founder member and designer of the National Hennie Joubert Piano Competition for young pianists up to the age of 18 years. This competition received International status from the Chopin Institute (based in Tokyo) in 2000 for its consistent high level of presentation and performance as well as the challenging repertoire required of the competitors. This competition is now presented

bi-annually during the International Piano Symposium at the University of Stellenbosch.Andre received academic and professional quali�ications from the universities of NMMU (UPE), UCT and UNISA. He is on the Academic staff of the CPUT where he lectures and trains prospective teachers mainly in the GET phase. He is currently in the process of registering for a Ph.D. in Choral Tone. He is pro�icient in 6 musical instruments and has performed professionally in piano, clarinet, voice and church organ.His career, mainly as a singer, has taken him to the UK, Belgium, France, Namibia, Switzerland and the USA.

Albert Chimedza is the Founder and Director of The Mbira Centre, based in Harare, Zimbabwe and is the Founder and Artistic director of Mbira Month, an annual event aimed at celebrating and raising awareness of the mbira worldwide during the month of September. The Mbira Centre hosts the Zimbabwe Mbira Schools Festival. He is also a founding Fellow and director of The Mbira Institute, an applied think tank dedicated to the research and study of mental decolonisation and indigenous intellectual capital.Albert has taught and performed mbira locally and also collaborated with musicians from Italy, Spain, Madagascar, Germany, Indonesia, Ethiopia and Japan. In 2006 he was Artist in Residence at Wellesley College in Boston where he introduced mbira to the Music Department. During that time he was also invited to make an mbira presentation at the Juilliard School of music in New York. He studied Psychology and sociology at the University of Zambia in Lusaka, screenwriting and �ilm making at the �ilm schools at Columbia University in New York and USC in Los Angeles. He is a Fulbright scholar and a Fellow of the Sundance Institute.Albert was a member of the board of trustees for the Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust from 2002 to 2007 and for Alliance Francaise, Harare from 2004 to 2006. For two years, he served on the cultural industries sub sector committee, an advisory body to the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe’s Board of Trustees. He also served as the Chairman of the Zimbabwe Chamber of Creative Industries, (ZCCI), 2014 – 2016.

Mike McMullen was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and was taught to play the bagpipes by Charlie Stewart from the age of 11. He attended Northlea High School and was a member of the school band from 1970-1974 during which they won the Junior South African Championship in 3 successive years. After school Mike joined the Bulawayo Pipe Band for a few years before being posted overseas to Bahrain, where he joined the Bahrain Pipe Band for 2 years. On returning to Zimbabwe he and others re-formed the Harare Caledonian Pipe Band and he was also the Pipe Major from 1995-1999. He has won several individual piping prizes both as a junior and at senior level. Mike has taught many students over the years, and he continues to be involved in piping and drumming in Zimbabwe, South Africa and in the UK. This is Mike’s second Eisteddfod as the piping and drumming judge.

4.00 Choir Workshop with George Tamisai

George Tamisai was born in Zengeza, Zimbabwe and attended Zengeza High and Seke Schools. He graduated from the Zimbabwe Academy with a Bachelor of Music in Ethnomusicology of Music from Africa University in 2011 majoring in Voice and Mbira. He holds a level 4 conductor’s training certificate from the Federation of Choral Music in Zimbabwe which he attained in 2012 after intensive training with a facilitator, Mr Sam Msibi, from South Africa. Over the past eight years he has trained, conducted and adjudicated choral groups of all ages.George has performed internationally with the Zimbabwe College of Music Choir at an international festival in China in 2012, with the Pathway Dance Group at an Eisteddfod in Wales in 2014 and as a bass soloist for The Zimbabwe Suite UK’s premier in London in 2016. He was the Choirmaster of the well-known Chitungwiza Harmony Singers between 2010 and 2016 and conducted the choir at choir festivals in South Africa in 2012, 2015 and 2016.George is the Founder and Music Director of Glorious Melodies Choir a community group based in Zengeza and teaches at Pathway Primary School.

Max Covini was born and raised in Omegnia, Italy. Mr Covini is a graduate of the New Academy of Modern Music in Milan where he obtained honours for drumming, andspecialised in blues, big band and jazz. He had the opportunity to further his studies in drums under the guidance of Maestro Enrico Lucchini of Milan, Italy. He joined the staff of Peterhouse Group of Schools in August 2016 where he teaches drums. Max has adjudicated at some of the biggest drum and school festivals including Percfest Percussion Festival and the International School Music Festival “Citta’ di Stresa" where he judged jazz, big band, drum and piano. Max has played professionally for many international artists and groups and has performed at international music and drumming festivals around the world including our own HIFA. Max is the founder of the international project ‘Zimbo-Ita’ which is a group of 4 professional musicians from Zimbabwe and Italy. He is also a director of the international H2On organisation music school project in Haiti.
