    READING COMPREHENSION

Look at the statements below and at the five extracts A-E about different types

    of internet companies.

    Which article (A, B, C, D or E) does each statement 1 8 refer to?

    A

Selling books over the internet was one of its first applications. There were a number

of players, but the dominant company to emerge in this area now sells not just books

everything from records to electrical goods to clothes. Each continent where itoperates is served by a giant warehouse each warehouse is large enough to hold

several jumbo jets. The website itself is fast and extremely easy to use no waiting

for screens to load. The site also acts as a host to thousands of other sellers, taking a

commission on each sale. It can be credited with single-handedly having revived the

    second-hand book industry.

    B

The internet has revolutionized the world of classified directories. Paper directories

were out of date by the time they were published, but online ones can be updated in

real time. Revenue comes from businesses paying for entries that are more prominent

than standard ones. In paper directories, the alphabet dictated which businesses were

displayed first in each category, but businesses can now pay for their names to appear

first, wherever they appear in the alphabet. Directory sites now change hands for

    millions of pounds.

Standard newspaper sites are fighting the perception that what they offer should be

available for free. Some sites have started to make users pay for at least some of their

content. Business users are happy to pay for business information in this way, but

general readers are less easy to persuade. Another recent development has been for

newspaper sites to include video sequences: from being purveyors of the written word

and still photographs, they are increasingly behaving like broadcasters. What will the

future be for online newspapers in this environment?

    D

In its early days, the internet was used to buy goods and to access information or

content. But few foresaw how some of the most successful companies associated

with the second wave of the internet would include sites where the content was

provided by the users themselves. There seems to be no limit to the appetite of people

to watch the video clips of total strangers. But the film studios and news broadcasters

are understandably annoyed when their copyrighted content appears on these sites

    illegally.

    E

Auction sites, like bookselling sites, are dominated by one big organization. You can

buy and sell almost anything on the site. And as for books, secondhand markets have

been reinvigorated. Parents selling their childrens toys as they get older are one

example of people who use the site. Some people are able to make a good living by

buying and selling over this site, but research shows that of all the people who use the

site to buy things, only 5 per cent use it to sell things.
