They are used to sort words of similar meaning into groups by strength of connotation, with the strongest words of opposite mean- ings on opposite sides, and more neutral words in the center. The word bank below the contin- uum is where you would put words for a specific family. For example, let’s look at Cold ↔ Hot. We’ll use a short list of words in the word bank, and put them into the five categories. Some of this is subjec- tive, but for the most part people would agree on the relative strengths of words. Remember, you can start with a basic list and have your students add more that they know! It’s also good to add a few they don’t know, so they can get some dictionary practice in. The goal here is to get students to start thinking of a variety of words and to make their own thesauri of common adjectives they use. Neutral words might be the hardest to think of. Use of this strategy should add color and flavor to students’ writing, and could be used as a strategy for English Language Learners. This is a great cooperative learning language activity. Do not hesitate to use this strategy for adverbs and even verbs that show varying de- grees of magnitude, such as different walking and running speeds.

Word Bank

The Continuum features five

boxes. They are used to sort words

of similar meaning into groups by

strength of connotation, with the

strongest words of opposite mean-

ings on opposite sides, and more

neutral words in the center.

The word bank below the contin-

uum is where you would put words

for a specific family. For example,

let’s look at Cold ↔ Hot. We’ll use

a short list of words in the word

bank, and put them into the five

categories. Some of this is subjec-

tive, but for the most part people

would agree on the relative

strengths of words.

Remember, you can start with a

basic list and have your students

add more that they know! It’s also

good to add a few they don’t know,

so they can get some dictionary

practice in.

The goal here is to get students to start thinking of a variety of words and to make their

own thesauri of common adjectives they use. Neutral words might be the hardest to

think of. Use of this strategy should add color and flavor to students’ writing, and could

be used as a strategy for English Language Learners. This is a great cooperative learning

language activity.

Do not hesitate to use this strategy for adverbs and even verbs that show varying de-

grees of magnitude, such as different walking and running speeds.
