War with Japan Bombing Pearl Harbor was a huge
success for the Japanese. Weakened American Forces in the
Pacific. The Japanese also gained an intense
pride and encouraged the continuation of the war.
The Japanese were very successful at the beginning of the war in the Pacific. They were able to successfully capture
Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Burma from the British.
Also gained control of Korea and Manchuria

Secretary of War Henry Stimson heard MacArthur’s requests for more food and supplies but thought it was too risky. He said, “There are times when men have to die.”
The Philippines cont. MacArthur was forced to leave the
Philippines and vowed “I shall return” In spring of 1942 10,000 American
troops and 60,000 Filipino troops surrendered on the Bataan Peninsula. The Bataan Death March: The Japanese
soldiers then forced the surrendered troops to march for 5 days and nights without food. If a soldier dropped out of line they were beaten or shot.
Thousands of soldiers died on the march. The soldiers who survived the march did not fare better in the POW camp.
