Vaughan’s message

Chief Executive

You will see in the enclosed newsletter that the lively activities of Juniper continue at a pace.

I am confident that this is the way it will be for many years to come, and Juniper will grow bigger and stronger with each passing year as it embraces the demands and opportunities of an ageing society.

This is my last message for Viva Voce and I am now preparing for something quite different - the next stage of my own life post Juniper.

This is a milestone event in anyone’s life, moving from the strictures and formal demands of a workplace to the more casual setting of home and majority time spent with family, not work colleagues. It is a paradigm shift.

When I reflect back on the last 29 years I think how lucky I have been. To have had the opportunity to build a new organisation from scratch is a rare event in anyone’s working life but to meet and work with

thousands of wonderful and inspiring people on the way is an added bonus.

Of course there are many things I will not miss. I will not miss another smoke and mirrors Federal government budget, or the political shenanigans surrounding changes in policy direction, or the attempts to excuse the inexcusable. I won’t miss meetings, or conflict between staff, or plane flights, or dealing with the consequences of daylight saving for one day meetings on the East Coast.

All jobs have their good and bad features and I am very grateful that overall my role has been one of sheer pleasure.

The new Chief Executive, Chris Hall, will arrive on Monday 13 August to commence his journey as the primary leader of Juniper. I trust that you will extend to Chris all of the trust and goodwill that I have enjoyed over the decades.

I thank all of you for your forbearance and understanding

over the years as Juniper has adapted to a rapidly changing operating environment. I know that many of the changes have not been easy for some people to accept.

But life goes on and the Juniper family has much to celebrate - much to be proud of.

Thank you for taking the time to read my messages over the years and I wish each one of you good health and a good life – for that is the aspirational VISION of Juniper.

Until we meet again…….

On Mission: a history of the development of Juniper – a Uniting Church Community

Some time ago, a project was conceived to record the history and creation of Juniper from its early beginnings through to the organisation we are today.

The resulting book, On Mission: a history of the development of Juniper – a Uniting Church Community, written by researcher-historian Clare Menck, was released in April and is a valuable reference tool for those interested in the genesis of Juniper and the social history of aged care in Australia.

While copies of the book have been distributed to all Juniper sites, there are still limited numbers available. If you are interested in receiving a copy of the book, please contact PR and Communications Manager Roley Myers at [email protected]

Spectacular sculptures by the seaThe residents of City of Bayswater Hostel soaked up some sunshine and culture when they visited the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition at Cottesloe Beach in March.

Striking pieces of artwork stretched from the sea wall along the sand towards North Cottesloe and on the surrounding grassed areas, creating a wonderful visual display.

A tour guide led residents though the sculptures, sharing the artists’ stories and inspirations, inviting discussion and the

opportunity to experience the contemporary pieces through their sense of touch.

A common favourite was the “Swirling Surround” – a dome-like structure made from 999 glass fish and based on the Fibbonaci sequence. The sculpture captures the idea that as a whole we are greater than

the sum of individual parts, as different cultures cooperate and collaborate to find a deep sense of community.

The fun continued after the tour as residents took a scenic bus ride to King’s Park where they reflected on their busy day over sandwiches, tea and ice cream.

Residents and staff at St David’s spent their first day of Autumn immersing themselves in Indian culture and celebrating the Festival of Colours.

Also known as Holi, the Festival of Colours is an ancient traditional Hindu festival that is now celebrated widely across the world and was originally created to give thanks for a good harvest, to celebrate the victory of good over evil and to welcome the arrival of Spring in India.

Therapy Assistant Manjula Patel planned a number of activities for residents and staff to bring the Festival of Colours to St David’s.

“Holi is a day for people to play, laugh and to mend broken relationships. In India people throw brightly coloured powder on each other in the streets, there is music, dancing and a lot of fun,” said Manjula.

To prepare for the festival, residents made decorations with their own hand prints by dipping their hands in powdered colour. Dressed up in beautiful saris and colourful scarves everyone enjoyed participating in a very festive Bollywood dance sequence.

Residents were also thrilled to try a selection of delicious Indian treats including onion pakoras and rose and cardamom biscuits.

“We believe it’s important for our residents to experience the diversity of cultures in Australia – especially the fun bits!” said Manjula.

Recently I was on holiday in Europe and was excited when it started snowing. From inside the train it was an unexpected experience to look out of the window at the snowflakes drifting down and it was beautiful. I had to remind myself that it was rather cold outside and it wouldn’t be long before the snow melted and either disappeared altogether or became a slushy icy mess that made any kind of activity difficult. “Unseasonal,” the locals said, but in the moment,

from the comfort of the train, it was wonderful.

The feeling of this unanticipated experience stayed with me for some time, even when the train travelled into sunshine with no snow or ice in sight. And the memory of it still lingers as a highlight of the trip.

I don’t expect to see any snow during our winter, though it does occasionally fall on the highest peak of the Stirling Ranges in the south of our State. But I want to be open

to the unexpected events of weather or life that might come my way as the seasons change. Life often brings “unseasonal” circumstances that can bring great joy or challenge our resilience to manage difficult circumstances. We need to gather our inner resources and build our relationships with our significant people to prepare us to meet whatever life presents.

Shifting FocusJuniper Community’s Client Care Advisor in the South West, Nicky Dobrich, shares this heart-warming story of the literary achievements of client Laurel Trigwell, made possible with the help of Juniper Volunteer, Francine McGuinness.

In 2014 Busselton resident Laurel Trigwell, then 86 years old, met Juniper Volunteer Francine (Fran) McGuinness. Fran was to visit Laurel each week to assist her with accessing her local community. Laurel who lives with Macular Degeneration has always had a love of gardening and reading but found she could no longer see the paper to read it and gardening was also physically challenging. Fran was happy to help. She would read the paper to Laurel and they would take trips to the library together for talking books.

“I didn’t want to burden the family with things but when Fran came it created a two-hour pocket of time that was just for me,” Laurel said.

Fran and Laurel’s friendship blossomed and it was through their many conversations that Fran discovered Laurel not only had a great love of reading but she also had a talent for writing.

Laurel had a collection of poems and family stories she had written over the years and was keen to get them in some sort of order so she could pass on the family’s history to future generations.

Laurel and Fran spent the next few months collecting Laurel's poems and with support from the Margaret River Bookbinding Company, bound them into several hardback books for family. In Christmas 2015, Laurel surprised her family with her first book of poetry, “Windows to the Past.”

This sparked a fire in Laurel and she was keen to start writing again. She would write through the week and Fran would read everything back to Laurel during her visits.

The purchase of a magnifying glass and a voice recorder made things easier. The two friends spent many hours together talking about Laurel’s family history. Laurel transformed these stories into beautiful poetry that

described the hardship faced by her family who arrived from England in 1841, settling in the Donnybrook/Capel area.

Fran would electronically transcribe these stories and by December 2017, at the grand old age of 90, Laurel Audrey Trigwell had become the author of her second book aptly named “Against the Odds”.

“The name came from the struggle of losing some function but not letting it get the better of me…shifting focus…look what can happen when you do that!” said Laurel.

Laurel’s book can be found on the shelf of Barefoot Books in Busselton and she is now focusing on a third book.

A wedding belle at Sarah HardeyJuniper Sarah Hardey resident, Joy Fidock was delighted to receive a surprise visit from her granddaughter and beautiful bride, Anikka who stopped past the facility on the way to her wedding to see her grandmother. It was a wonderful way for Joy to share in her granddaughter’s special day.

Understanding people’s changing needs and their desire to live a full life are at the heart of our latest project, the Juniper Orana apartments in Menora.

New apartments open at Elimatta

Juniper Orana, meaning ‘welcome’, features 40 self-contained apartments in a range of one, two and three bedroom or two-bed plus study layouts, each with a bathroom and air-conditioned open-plan living and dining area.

The apartments were officially opened on May 16 by the 30th Governor of Western Australia, Dr Ken Michael AC with Juniper Board Chair Mr Fred Boshart and were dedicated by Past Moderator of the Uniting Church in Australia WA, Rev Ken Williams.

“This initiative represents the best in retirement accommodation where residents can enjoy security, independence and the benefits of community living,” Chief Executive Vaughan Harding said.

The apartments are the latest stage of the redevelopment of the Juniper Elimatta site in Menora which comprises a mix of residential aged care, retirement villas and apartments.

“Plans for the balance of the site are currently under development and Juniper expects in coming months to submit to the City

of Stirling a revised masterplan that will guide the broad uses of the site over future stages,” Mr Harding said.

Perth architects Hames Sharley and builders Pyramid Constructions and other local suppliers were engaged to design and build the apartments.

Planes, trains and automobiles

Discovering a talent for shaping wooden toys has led Juniper Volunteer Gerry Loermans to make countless vehicles and bring joy to many people.

Gerry, who has been crafting since 2013, said he found his vocation by accident while working for Santa’s workshop where they were not turning out too many toys for boys.

“When I started, I found that I had quite a talent for it and they supplied the materials,” he said.

Since then Gerry’s lost count of how many planes, trains and trucks he’s made.

What’s sure is he loves making them and if you would love a wooden creation by Gerry call him on 0438 030 228 for availability and pricing.

Valued volunteers spruce up Juniper GardensEach Thursday, Juniper Volunteers, David and his carer Bernie, roll up their sleeves and get to work at Juniper Gardens in Balcatta.

Gardens Coordinator, Rochelle Heath, said their dedicated efforts have made a big difference with helping to keep the much-loved outdoor space in tip top shape.

“David’s keen interest in cleaning and organising has ensured the garden continues to be a safe and practical space that is ready for visitors at any time,” Rochelle said.

“Their recent high pressure cleaning of the paving has made it look like new!”

A morning of hard work is always topped off with a cuppa and a chat about what they will tackle next week. A big thank you to David and Bernie for helping to keep Juniper Gardens looking its very best.

Remember to not overwater your indoor plants – let the soil almost dry out before giving them another drink to avoid rotting roots. Fertilise your indoor plants with a slow release fertiliser every two months.

As we retreat indoors for Winter, it is still possible to surround yourself with greenery using houseplants. They not only look great and brighten up the home, houseplants can also elevate your mood, enhance creativity and even improve air quality as indoor plants are very useful air filters, dutifully extracting harmful compounds in the air.

Gardens Coordinator Rochelle Heath recommends these indoor plants to naturally clean your air and brighten your home:

The residents of Hilltop enjoyed an informative and nostalgic trip to OZwest Aviation where they saw a classic 1930s-style WACO biplane and another aircraft used for skydiving. While almost everyone’s feet stayed firmly on the ground, Therapy Assistants, Lorraine and Jan took a seat in the WACO’s open-air cockpit and even took a short taxi down the runway! Much to their relief the plane didn’t take off but thanks to the hospitality of Ozwest, everyone had a wonderful time.

Just plane fun

WAYJO in NorthamThe Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra were on the road through April and May and paid a special visit to our Northam residents. Everyone gathered at Juniper The Residency to hear this talented group of young musicians play and the concert was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Even the neighbours said how much they enjoyed the music!

It was all part of the WAYJO’s Goldfields-Wheatbelt tour where they hit the road to perform at a variety of regional community locations.

Armed with a guitar and a smile, Juniper Volunteer Mei-Lyn Woon drops into the City of Bayswater Hostel every week for a Sunday session of sing-a-longs.

A talented and experienced musician, Mei-Lyn currently studies music at the University of Western Australia and teaches piano and guitar to younger students. She first started volunteering with Juniper two years ago, following a desire to contribute something meaningful to the community involving music.

“It was a spontaneous but confident decision and I haven’t looked back since!” says Mei-Lyn.

Mei-Lyn will carefully choose songs that resonate with individual residents and will often create her playlists from discussions with families. The songs may represent a person’s birthplace like “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”, they may trigger a memory from a special time in their lives or may simply be old favourites like “Bicycle Built for Two” or “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary.” The result is a room full of smiles, singing, clapping and sometimes dancing.

“The physical, emotional and mental benefits become more prevalent each week. Music has

the potential to unlock something in each individual,” she said.

Mei-Lyn hopes to pursue a career in music therapy in a number of different settings including aged care and has been inspired by the Juniper staff she has encountered throughout her volunteer work.

“The care and values held by the staff at Juniper are truly fantastic. If having a career in aged care allows one to exhibit such commitment to enhance quality of life – it’s definitely worth looking into,” she said.

Congratulations to Joyce Ashworth who recently celebrated 45 years of continuous service with Juniper!

A much loved and widely respected Multi-skilled Carer/Supervisor at Juniper Elimatta, Joyce was delighted to be surrounded by her colleagues, family and residents who all gathered to celebrate her inspirational milestone with food, gifts, speeches and of course a very big cake!

Of her earlier days in aged care, at the Methodist Memorial Hospital in Subiaco, Joyce recalls learning everything from “on the job” training. Joyce worked at the hospital until it was demolished in 1999, moving to St Andrew’s for about a year where she helped to set up Juniper’s very first home care program. In 2001 Joyce starting working at Juniper Elimatta as a carer and has been there ever since.

When managers and fellow staff members are asked about Joyce, the words “gem”, “angel” and “lifesaver” are frequently used.

“There seems to be no limit to Joyce’s commitment, dedication and incredible generosity,” says manager Caroline Barlow.

“Joyce is always willing to help with whatever is needed around the facility, no matter what it is. She is always focussing on the individual needs of residents and will go out of her way to ensure they feel comfortable and at home here.

Congratulations on 45 years Joyce!

Caroline, Joyce and Vaughan.

“She is also trusted, respected and loved by her fellow workers and enjoys sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with them.”

Not only is Joyce a dedicated employee, she is also a Juniper Volunteer and was recently recognised by the State Government’s WA Volunteer Service Awards. She has also been nominated in this year’s ACSA Aged Care Awards in the Employee of the Year category.

Joyce says she was drawn to aged care at an early age when she used to help her mother care for an elderly neighbour.

“I think it was always just in me to care for older people. It felt right – like it was something I was meant to do,” she said.

Hillcrest Hurricanes win gold! The Hillcrest Hurricanes are excited to report they brought home gold, in Geraldton’s Live Lighter Aged Care Games. Each year local seniors’ teams are invited to compete in this popular event at the QEII Community Centre. The Hurricanes took part in seated hockey, passball, bean bag toss and skittles with Juniper Volunteer Gabby winning the “Support Crew” event. Juniper Hillcrest’s team have won gold at this event for three years in a row! Congratulations to everyone involved and a big thank you to Therapy Assistant Lee-anne Robb and her volunteers, Gabby, Ailsa, Pat, Brian, Keith and Steve for helping to make the day such a success.

Welcome to JuniperA warm welcome to all new staff members who have joined Juniper in recent months in a wide variety of roles. We’d like to introduce a number of new recruits who are also key contacts for you within the Juniper team.

Hiral DesaiAs Juniper St Andrew’s new Residential Manager, Hiral oversees the day to day operation of the facility to ensure the highest quality of care for residents.

Hiral completed a Bachelor of Nursing in India and became registered as a nurse in Australia after completing the International Registration of Overseas Nurses (IRON) program. Hiral has experience in many areas of nursing including emergency, theatre, medical and surgical wards. She has also worked in a number of residential aged care facilities as a Clinical Nurse Manager and Facility Manager.

“Everyone has been very welcoming and I am enjoying working with Juniper more each day as I get to know everyone. I’m amazed by the staff’s passion to provide excellent care,” says Hiral.

Peter HumphriesPeter joined us in February as Residential Area Manager, Coastal and oversees the management of six residential facilities as well as Juniper Charles Jenkins, Transition Care.

A Registered Nurse with a post graduate qualification in Health Service Management, Peter has a vast and varied background spanning a number of different countries! Trained as an RN in the North East of England he has since worked in Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea and Far East Russia as well as in Australia in both rural and metropolitan hospitals and also in aged care.

“I was very much attracted to Juniper’s mission and values and I see it being enacted every day,” said Peter.

“The team I work with is fantastic. It’s great that we can have robust discussions and collaborative outcomes.”

With many changes on the horizon for aged care across the country, Peter is looking forward to helping Juniper lead the way towards client directed residential care.

Striking a chordWhile it has been many years since former musician and Pilgrim resident, Bill Goodridge played a tune, music is now making a comeback into his life.

Bill lives with short term dementia and even though he previously played the piano, drums, banjo and ukulele, he hasn’t played for many years.

In recent months with encouragement from Therapy Assistant Esperanza Gutierrez, Bill has begun to play the piano again and is entertaining residents with his tunes.

“I initially encouraged Bill to play the piano for about 10 minutes each day and as he played over time, he began to remember more and more. Now he plays for more than 40 minutes most days and sometimes twice a day!” said Esperanza.

“It’s wonderful to see how happy he is doing what he loves most.”

Residents took a trip down memory lane as they enjoyed songs like Enchanted Evening from South Pacific, Luck be a Lady from Guys and Dolls and Sixteen going on Seventeen from The Sound of Music.

Everyone is very much looking forward to the next fun event!
