How about a Ripleyesque journey into Jewish, ritual history. In the old days, and today among our traditional coreligionists, in death, one was honored with words of Torah. The bereaved would gather and study a sacred text that would be dedicated to the memory of the deceased. Typically, this was done during the week of shiva and on the annual yahrtzeit. This custom goes back centuries, well before Edison and GE and so, along with a teacher and a Talmud, illumination was needed in the house of loss. At the end of the lesson it was customary to recite Kaddish extolling the greatness of God. And so, associated with death was a rabbinic teaching, a Kaddish and a candle.

As the years passed and the old ways were forgotten, what survived the friction of time was the Kaddish and the candle, the two, most familiar expressions of mourning today. What was primarily intended to celebrate, to praise, to sanctify the departed soul is no longer, but vestiges, accidental byproducts, have emerged as the holy acts of remembrance. The unintended consequences of expedited faith and simplified observance.

Today, I daresay, there has been even more attrition to the respectful rites of those who have gone before us and have left this earth. If lucky, maybe a candle will be lit in their memory though more likely it is a fleeting pause in the day’s routine and no more. A symbol of this diminishment is the black ribbon pinned to the clothes of the bereaved. It has become a powerful act but it is a tepid substitute for the emotional, sacrificial ripping of one’s garment in a moment of inconsolable sorrow. There are four times during the year when Yizkor is recited, Yom Kippur is but one of them, and yet for most, once is enough. It is sad reciting the names on the Yahrtzeit list, Shabbos after Shabbos, with no one in attendance from the family. Coming to minyon on the precise date? Fugeddaboudit.

Tradition teaches that salvation for our loved ones is accelerated, their tarnished souls purged more rapidly of sin if we, their survivors, pray for them and perform the appropriate rituals for them in the land of the living. I suspect that the message is more for us, teaching holy responsibility, than for them, speeding up their trip to Gan Eden. Ignoring our obligations creates distance between us and our loved ones who have perished but it also pushes them from fading memory into oblivion.

Judaism and Poverty

Fifty years ago, on January 8, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson declared his war on poverty. The poverty rate in America in 1964 was 19 percent. President Johnson reasoned that “the richest nation on earth can afford to win it; we cannot afford to lose it.” Fifty years later, we have not made much progress in America. The poverty rate is at least 15 percent today and our Congress has just cut food benefits for 48 million Americans by seven percent and at least temporarily has allowed the unemployment benefits of 1.3 million Americans to lapse. According to the New York Times, at least five million Americans will lose their benefits over the next year. Each year the government of Israel announces how many of its citizens live below the poverty line. The answer is twenty percent. And around the world, 865 million people live on approximately ninety-nine cents a day.

The Torah teaches the following: “If there is a needy person among you, one of your kinsmen in any of your settlements in the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not harden your heart and shut your hand against the needy…rather you must open your hand and lend him sufficient resources for whatever he needs…For the poor will never disappear from the earth which is why I command you: open your hand to the poor…” (Deut 15:7-11).

Notice the wisdom that the Torah suggests to us: “for the poor will never disappear…” Many have written on poverty. Scholars from Jeffrey D. Sachs of Columbia University to Esther Duflo of MIT have studied and recommended often opposing strategies to dealing with poverty. All believe that there are things we can do to help alleviate poverty in our world. But Esther Duflo admits: “poverty has been with us for many thousands of years; if we have to wait another fifty or hundred years for the end of poverty, so be it; but let us join hands in the quest for the many ideas, big and small, that will eventually take us to that world where no one has to live on 99 cents per day.”

Maimonides wrote over seven hundred years ago, “I have never heard of an Israelite community that did not have a charity fund and did not take care of its poor.” The Jewish community can take pride in its long history of ensuring that people – both Jews and non- Jews – do not starve or lack clothing. Our Yom Kippur haftarah admonishes Jews who fast but do not participate in solving the ills of society – feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. Rabbi Elliot Dorff in his recent work on Tikkun Olam suggests that “the task of discerning the just and the good for society and then acting on that knowledge are not just central to our Jewish Identity, it is what God demands of us – ‘do what is right and good before the Lord.’”

We may not be able to solve all of the complex issues that result in poverty in much of the world, but Judaism demands that we be part of the solution and take action through our tzedakah and volunteer efforts to help change our world. Perhaps the words of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy reflect my thoughts in this essay: “Let no one be discouraged by the belief that there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world’s ills – against misery and ignorance, injustice and violence…but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written in history… each time we stand up for an ideal, or act to improve that lot of others, or strike out against injustice, we send a tiny ripple of hope and those ripples build a current which can sweep down the walls of oppression and resistance.”

And so it begins, Voice of Chaim article number one of twenty-two to be written over the next two years. As you can imagine, I approach this responsibility with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The Presidents who have served before me all have binders filled with their articles – mementos of what I am told is the monthly struggle to relay something meaningful to the congregation. Let me apologize in advance for my writings, as I was a Biology major in college – definitely more microscopes than literary endeavors.

I want to start by thanking all of you for having the confidence to put me in this position of leadership at Congregation Etz Chaim. I am very excited to work with our Rabbis, professional staff and lay leadership to continue moving Etz Chaim in a positive direction. The Executive Committee and Board of Trustees that have been put into place by our nominating committee are a fantastic group of individuals who I am looking forward to working with as a group to keep growing the work started by my predecessors.

If you read Scott Rittenberg’s last article, you know that he has changed the way our Board of Trustees operates. He has taken both our Board and the entire congregation to new levels of engagement. The congregational survey gave us several areas where we could pursue paths of improvement and Scott has led the board in tackling these issues. Let me take this opportunity to thank the Board Members who have completed their term, as well as those who are continuing on, for your service to the congregation. You truly tackled areas of need and have pushed Etz Chaim to grow and develop according to our congregants’ desires. On behalf of the entire congregation, I want to extend our sincere thanks to Scott and to the entire Board for their diligence and hard work.

I need to extend a huge personal thank you to Scott for his uncompromising dedication to his vision for Etz Chaim. He has made such a positive impact on the synagogue and has been an incredible mentor. I know I speak for his entire Executive Committee when I say that it has been an honor and a privilege to work under his leadership. Please take a moment when you see Scott or any of our Executive Committee and full Board Members to thank them for their time and efforts.

Before I conclude, let me take a moment also to thank my husband David and my children, Jessie and Amanda, for encouraging me to take on the synagogue presidency. They have always been in my corner with respect to my service to the shul – be it as a Preschool Board member, Sisterhood President, the BOT or a volunteer mom. I thank them for allowing me to be a part of this organization, as I know it often takes me away from my family.

To the congregation, this is somewhat uncharted territory for me, so I hope you will bear with me as I navigate the presidency. I look forward to meeting many more of you and hearing from you if you have concerns or kudos to share. As we continue to move forward, I hope that you will all feel the need to become more involved and stay engaged with Congregation Etz Chaim. Our website is a fabulous tool with so much information about our programming and affinity groups. Take a few minutes to see what peaks your interests. And do be in touch if there is anything I can do to enhance your experience at Etz Chaim and I will do my very best.

From Our PresidentFrom Our Executive DirectorLast fall, we told you about a new Kroger Rewards program that was taking the place of the old certificate/gift card program. This is so easy. All you do is register online, scan your Kroger card or enter your phone number when you shop at Kroger and Etz Chaim gets a rebate. This does not affect the mileage you earn, your gas credits or anything else. Plain and simple, we, as a non-profit organization, get a rebate on monies you spend.

During the first quarter of the program, September thru November, we earned $531 because 90 Etz Chaim families took the time to participate. If 500 member families did this, we would have earned over $2,500 for the quarter or annualized $10,000 plus. Please sign up and participate. It is easy. All you do is create an online Kroger account by enrolling with your email address and a personal password at www.krogercommunityrewards.com. Once you have done this, go to the “my account” tab on the top right of your screen. You will enter your Kroger Plus card number. Once you have done this, find the tab “Community Rewards”. Enter Etz Chaim as the recipient with our Non-Profit Organization (NPO#) 80318. Once you have saved this information, a percentage of your Kroger purchases will help raise funds for Etz Chaim.

I hope you all had a wonderful January and that the adjustment back into school was manageable and without trouble. We have a fun month ahead of us, one that is full of events, conventions, breakfasts, and much more!

• February 1 6th – 12th Grades: Join us for a fun and exciting Atlanta Hawks lock-in with the other Atlanta area chapters, hosted by KUSY at Beth Shalom. We will be headed to the Hawks game via the Fox Sports South Charter Bus, and afterwards will head back to Beth Shalom for more fun! The event will go from 6:45 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. starting and ending at Congregation Beth Shalom. The cost is $20. RSVPS are due by January 29. 6th and 7th graders are invited to the game; however, the lock-in is for 8th – 12th grades only.

• February 2 K – 2nd Grades: Join us as we celebrate one another with fun activities, including cookie decorating, card making, and a fun gift exchange. The event will go from 12:15-1:30 p.m. in Congregation Etz Chaim’s social hall. Free for members/ $5 for non-members. RSVPs are due by January 31.

• February 2 3rd – 5th Grades: Join us as we have delicious s’mores, sing campfire songs, and enjoy a campfire. The event will go from 3-4:45 p.m. at the Youth House. Free for members/$10 for non-members. RSVP by January 31.

• February 9 9th – 12th Grades: Join us for a defensive driving program from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at Congregation Etz Chaim. Featuring simulators, speakers, and much more!

Rachel Beth Givarz will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on February 8, 2014 – 8 Adar I 5774. She is the daughter of Mimi and Jay Givarz. Rachel’s Bat Mitzvah parasha is Tetzaveh. Rachel is a 7th grader at Dickerson Middle School and has been a student in Etz Chaim’s Religious School for 8 years. Her hobbies and interests include tennis, art and hanging out with her friends and family. Rachel’s Bat Mitzvah theme, as the youngest of three, is inspired by the phrase: “Making My Own Footsteps.”

Rachel’s D’var Torah quote is “Thus Aaron shall carry the instrument of decision over his heart before the Lord at all times.” The decisions and choices Aaron makes come from his heart, which is visible to G-d, as are the decisions and choices we all make in our lives. For her mitzvah project, Rachel is collecting shoes for “Soles for Souls”. Founded in 2004, Soles4Souls is a global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty through the distribution of shoes and clothing.

Max Benjamin Szczupak will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 15, 2014 – 16 Adar I 5774. He is the son of Susan and Steve Szczupak. Max’s Bar Mitzvah parasha is Vayakhel. Max is a 7th grader at Simpson Middle School and has been a student in Etz Chaim’s Religious School for 7 years. He also attended our Preschool for 4 years. His hobbies and interests include playing the trumpet, chess, video games and astronomy.

For Max’s mitzvah project, instead of one individual project, he is participating in numerous mitzvah projects throughout the year with his 7th grade Etz Chaim Religious School class.

Alana Epstein will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on February 22, 2014 – 22 Adar I 5774. She is the daughter of Rachel and Rick Epstein. Alana’s Bat Mitzvah parasha is Vayakhel. Her hobbies and interests include lacrosse and basketball. Alana is a 7th grader at Dodgen Middle School and has been a student in Etz Chaim’s Religious School for 6 years.

Alana’s D’var Torah quote is “If G-d asked for you to bring the best of what you had to offer, what would you bring?” For her mitzvah project, Alana is selling bracelets to raise money for kids who cannot afford cochlear implants and the therapy they need.

As 2013 ends and 2014 begins, my role as President of the Etz Chaim Men’s Club begins. All of last year I served as co-president with Jeff Frankel. My thanks to Jeff for being a great mentor to me. Jeff is diligent and is very involved with continuing a progressive and relevant agenda for our Men’s Club. Jeff will remain as co-president this year while I continue the positive direction Jeff and the previous presidents have taken. Over the past few years our club Presidents developed new projects, such as the renewal of the Holocaust Memorial Garden and replacing the PA system in the sanctuary.

Men’s Club continues supporting daily minyan, annual picnics, joint events with Sisterhood and USY, World Wide Wrap, the Bob Goldman Fund, Steak in the Sukkah, pancake breakfast, turkey shoot, Men’s Club Retreat at Camp Ramah, the Jewish Film Festival Preview along with the “Best Breakfast in Town”.

It is important to know that no one person is doing everything. The Men’s Club has a core of people each pitching in to help make every event successful. Our hope is to encourage a new generation of men who would like to get involved and become part of the Men’s Club community.

On February 2, the Men’s Club will sponsor our annual World Wide Wrap. This is an important time for young men and woman to learn the mitzvah of laying Tefillin. The Tefillin is an extension of the Shema and was referenced in the Torah in Exodus and Deuteronomy. This is a very special time in a young person’s life. Often times in our custom, parents or a parent would come to lay Tefillin with their child. Great memories!!

The Men’s Club Casino Night that was scheduled for February has been postponed. Please stay tuned for more details. Friday, February 21, to Sunday, February 23, is the Annual Anshei Darom Retreat, a special weekend held at Camp Ramah nestled high in the North Georgia Mountains with Men’s Club members throughout the Southeastern United States. This is a great event and one every man should attend at least once.

Do not forget Men’s Club Shabbat on Saturday, April 5th. Any Men’s Club member interested in being a part of this mitzvah, please contact Andy Becker or Jeff Frankel.

Lastly, the Men’s Club has available an important way to honor a loved one by purchasing a Holocaust Memorial Garden Brick for the sum of $100. Order forms are available in the synagogue lobby.

Bereavement Services Offered to Congregants

Etz Chaim’s Chesed Committee will offer to provide meals of consolation to members. This meal is traditionally a dairy meal eaten by mourners upon their return home from the funeral. It includes whole hard-boiled eggs, symbolizing the continuity of life. This service provided by the Chesed Committee allows the family and friends who normally provide the meal to attend the funeral themselves and give emotional support to the bereaved. Members attending out of town funerals, who sit shiva or hold a memorial service in Atlanta, will be offered either a fruit or sweets tray.

In order to bring standardized, caring service to each member, Etz Chaim is modeling its procedures after those of Temple Sinai’s successful Kesher Committee. Contributions made to the Chesed Fund will help to fund these services. Teams are currently being formed for these purposes.

Jewish Disability Awareness Month

February is National Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month, which promotes full inclusion and participation of people with disabilities in the community. Its purpose is to ensure participation of Jews with disabilities and their families in all aspects of Jewish communal life by reminding us we are all created in the Divine Image. But there remain many individuals with disabilities who are not fully included.

February marks the start of, Adar the month when Purim occurs. Purim commemorates the saving and freedom of the Jewish people by Queen Esther. The disabilities movement, similar to Judaism, is an ongoing fight for freedom. While Jews fight for religious freedom, individuals with developmental disabilities fight for full inclusion and the right to self-determination. JF&CS’ Developmental Disabilities - Tools for Independence (TFI) division supports and facilitates that right – the

right of people with disabilities to live how and where they want. We promote independence and INTERdependence among individuals and those in their lives through programs like our Zimmerman-Horowitz independence Living Program and TFI WORKS Vocational Services. We embrace a holistic approach to person-centered supports in our Health Powerment Initiative, a program to prevent chronic disease and promote health. We recently added a program for adults with high-functioning autism.

The highlight of February as Jewish Disability Awareness Month is the Annual Larry Bregman, M.D., Educational Conference for adults with developmental disabilities, their families and their caregivers. The event takes place February 22-23 at the Selig Center.

The Breast Cancer Support Group meetings continue for the new year! The monthly support group meetings are for all interested people who have had cancer, who are going through treatment or surgeries, and/or who have been recently diagnosed, as well as for those who might have questions pertaining to breast cancer. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 16, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting’s purpose is to reflect upon personal experiences, meeting others and gathering information regarding diagnoses,

treatments and surgeries. This survivor support group is being sponsored by The Kehillat Chesed/Caring Committee of Temple Beth Tikvah, 9955 Coleman Rd, Roswell, 30075, who will be the host synagogue.
