Minimum RequirementsYou can run Operations Manager on hosts that meet the following minimum requirements:

NOTE: Minimum requirements depend on the size of your environment's inventory. The more datastores, hosts, VMs, and applications you have, the more resources you need to run the installation efficiently. Also note that other management software might recommend lower resources. Please be sure to give Operations Manager enough resources, using the guidelines above.

Operations Manager supports DHCP or static IP addressing. For information about using static IP addresses, see FAQ #4. on page 12.

Installing Operations ManagerAs you get started with Operations Manager, please note that there are different downloads available for the sup-ported hypervisors. These downloads all deliver the same version of Operations Manager with the same capabilities, but they are packaged to install and run on different hypervisor platforms.

Each installation manages virtual environments in exactly the same way. The installation you choose depends on your personal preference. This document describes installation procedures for each of the Operations Manager downloads. The installation you choose has no effect on the technologies you can manage with Operations Manager. No matter which type of machine hosts Operations Manager, you can manage all workloads running on the supported hypervi-sors, as well as those managed via cloud platforms and load balancer targets.

Installing on RHEV Systems

VMTurbo distributes the Operations Manager appliance as TGZ archives. RHEV provides a utility named rhevm-image-uploader that you must use to upload and import the appliance to a system in the RHEV environ-ment. This utility must be installed before you can use it. For more information, please refer to the RHEV portal article, RHEV: How do I use an appliance downloaded from the Market Place? You can find this article at:https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/articles/67891

The following steps assume you have rhevm-image-uploader installed and configured, and that you have iden-tified the export domain you will upload the appliance to.

1. Download the Operations Manager installation package. The email you received from VMTurbo includes links to the download pages.

2. Upload the TGZ file to the identified export domain via the rhevm-image-uploader utility.Execute the following command:# rhevm-image-uploader -e <export_domain> --name <name> upload <filename.tgz> where <export_domain> is the name of the export domain, and <name> is the name of the VM you want to create for the Operations Manager appliance. You must execute this command on a system that can mount the NFS export domain.

3. Import a VM from the appliance package into the export domain.- Open the RHEV admin interface and display the Storage tab- Locate and select the identified export domain, and click Import - In the confirmation dialog that appears, click OK The import operation may take some time — import runs in the background. When the import process is done, an event "Vm <name> was successfully imported" will appear under the Events tab.

4. Attach the Operations Manager appliance to the “rhevm” network. The rhevm-image-uploader tool does not create any network interfaces. You must manually create a network interface and attach the appliance to the rhevm network. - In the RHEV admin interface, display the Virtual Machines tab- Locate and select the Operations Manager virtual machine you just created- Click Network Interfaces and then New - Use the provided default values and click OK

5. Start the VM and record its IP address.6. Perform initial network and timezone configuration.

See How do I specify a static IP address for my Operations Manager appliance? on page 12 and How do I synchronize Operations Manager with my local time zone? on page 13.

License Installation and First-time LoginTo use Operations Manager, open a Web browser to the IP address of the installed appliance.

1. Connect to your Operations Manager server via a Web browser. 2. Log into Operations Manager.

- If you have already received a license, choose I have a license for full product and continue with the wizard. At the License Page of the wizard, copy-and-paste your license key information (sent to you in a separate email) into the license window. Then complete the wizard.

- If you want to try out the full-featured product for 30 days, choose I would like to request a license for a 30-day trial. Or to try the free product version, choose I would like to request a license for the free Virtual Health Monitor. When you continue, the wizard displays a form you can fill out to request a license. VMTurbo will send you an email message with the license data. Copy-and-paste your license key information into the license window, and then complete the wizard.

You can also apply or change a license outside of this wizard interface. Log into Operations Manager and display the Admin view. Then click License Configuration and copy-and-paste your license key information in the license window.

Depending on which license you have installed, the license enables either a trial or a full unlimited license for Opera-tions Manager. A trial license enables one of the following:

• Cloud Edition Operations Manager (30-day trial)• Enterprise Edition Operations Manager (30-day trial)• Virtual Health Monitor (six month trial, renewable)

The Cloud Edition and Enterprise Edition trials enable all Operations Manager features except the Planner. If you want a license to evaluate planning, please contact your VMTurbo sales representative, or send a request to [email protected].

At the conclusion of the trial your license will expire. When you next log into Operations Manager, the License wizard appears — you can then request a Virtual Health Monitor license. If you were unable to complete your evaluation within the trial period, feel free to send a request to [email protected]. We will be happy to arrange an exten-sion for you.

The Virtual Health Monitor enables the monitoring and reporting features of Operations Manager. Each Virtual Health Monitor license period lasts six months. You can renew this license as often as you like.

Upgrading your Operations Manager License

If you purchased a license to upgrade from a trial version to a full version, or if you purchased a license to add more features to your installation, you will receive a new license in an email message. To install this new license, display the Admin view and navigate to the License Configuration workflow. Then copy-and-paste the license key information into the license window.

The new features will automatically become available to you once you install the new license.

Updating Operations ManagerNOTE: Version 4.0 of Operations Manager includes improvements that require a full installation of a new appliance. This new

appliance will replace your current installation of Operations Manager. Simply updating your current installation will not properly migrate to version 4.0 of Operations Manager. Also, to retain your current database and configuration information, you must back up the current installation, and restore that backup to the new 4.0 installation. This section describes all the necessary steps.

We continually and rapidly innovate and improve all aspects of Operations Manager. This means that we periodically release newer versions of Operations Manager. You should check periodically to see if a new version is available.

When you first installed Operations Manager, you put into place very sophisticated data collection and analysis pro-cesses. Internal to the installation is an integrated database that retains performance data from across your virtual environment. Operations Manager uses this historical data for right-sizing, projecting trends, and other analysis. The

Page 10: VMTurbo Operations Manager 4.0 Installing and Updating … · 2019-12-19 · This document describes installation procedures for each of the Operations Manager downloads. The installation

database also stores your settings and preferences. This means that the database is important to Operations Manager and becomes more so over time. Properly updating your installation of Operations Manager preserves the database for continued use.

Even the free Virtual Health Monitor uses the database, even though the more advanced functionality based on this data is not available. If you later install a higher level license, the newly added features can use the stored data.

NOTE: What if your installation doesn’t have external internet access? In that case, navigate to the following location to access the files for an offline update:http://support.vmturbo.com/entries/21378687-vmturbo-operations-manager-current-release-offline-update

To upgrade to version 4.0 of Operations Manager:

1. Check the version of your current installation, and check to see whether a new version is available.Use this check to make sure the current version is lower than 4.0. If you currently have 4.0 installed, then check whether a later version is available for upgrade. If you are already running 4.0, then you can simply perform step 3, below. If the current version is earlier than 4.0, you must perform all of the following steps.See Checking for Newer Versions on page 9.

2. Download and install a new Operations Manager 4.0 appliance.Download the appliance for the platform of your choice, and install it in your environment. See Installing Operations Manager on page 2

3. Upgrade your current installation to version 4.0.Your existing Operations Manager server and the new Operations Manager server must be running the same version — Operations Manager 4.0. This is necessary to successfully restore a backup of your current data.See Updating Operations Manager on page 10

4. Back up the upgraded version of your current installation. After upgrading your current installation to 4.0, you must back up the database and configuration data. You will then restore the backup to your newly installed 4.0 appliance.See Backing Up Operations Manager Data on page 10

5. Restore your saved backup file to the new Operations Manager installation.Restoring your backup to the newly installed 4.0 appliance retains the data from your previous installation.See Restoring an Operations Manager Backup on page 11

Checking for Newer Versions

To check for newer versions, navigate to the Admin view and open the Maintenance workflow. In the Software Updates section, click Check to compare your current version with the latest available version.

Installing and Updating Operations Manager 10

The listing shows numbers for the current and available versions of the packages that make up Operations Manager. If the listing shows a higher version number for the available version, then you can update your installation.

Updating Operations Manager

NOTE: Before performing an update, you should properly shut down (not power off) the Operations Manager appliance VM and perform a snapshot (or clone the appliance VM). This provides a reliable restore point if trouble occurs during the upgrade.

To update your current installation, navigate to the Admin view and open the Maintenance workflow. In the Software Updates section, click Update.

Operations Manager updates automatically, and the update will complete in a few minutes. When the update is com-plete, refresh your browser view. After refreshing, you will have full access to Operations Manager features. However, features that rely on current analysis data will not be available until after a full market cycle — usually 10 minutes. For example, the To Do list will not show any recommended actions until after a full market cycle.

NOTE: If you are updating from 3.x to 4.0, this step does not complete your update process. You must update your current installation to version 4.0, and then back up your data. After that, you can restore the backup to your new installation of Operations Manager 4.0.

Backing Up Operations Manager Data

NOTE: When updating from 3.x to 4.0, you must back up your current installation after you have updated it to 4.0.

To back up your current installation of Operations Manager:

1. Establish a console or putty session to the Operations Manager appliance. Log in as root with the default password, vmturbo.

2. Run the following command to create the backup file:vmturbo:~ # /srv/tomcat/script/appliance/vmtbackup.sh -o full The resulting backup file is /tmp/vmtbackup.zip.

3. Copy this backup file to your new Operations Manager 4.0 installation. You will restore this backup to the new appliance. To copy the file, use the following command (while logged in to the old Operations Manager appliance):vmturbo:~ # scp /tmp/vmtbackup.zip [IP_addr]:/tmp This command asks for the password to enter the appliance you’re copying to — use vmturbo. For example, this command copies the backup to the appliance at 10.25100.115:vmturbo:~ # scp /tmp/vmtbackup.zip 10.25.100.115:/tmp

Restoring an Operations Manager Backup

After you backing up your old installation, restore the backup to your new 4.0 appliance. This migrates your installa-tion data to the new appliance.

WARNING: Before restoring your backup to the new 4.0 installation, you must shut down the older installation of Operations Manager. This ensures there is only one Operations Manager appliance operating in your environment with the same configuration.

1. Establish a console or putty session to the Operations Manager appliance. Log in as root with the default password, vmturbo.

2. Run the following command to restore your backup file:vmturbo:~ # cd / vmturbo:~ # /srv/tomcat/script/appliance/vmtrestore.sh -o full

3. Verify that the backup was successful.Log into the new Operations Manager user interface and confirm that the migration is complete and successful. Check your data in the following views:- Admin view — check configuration data such as license, user accounts, and target configurations - Policy view — check your custom groups under Group Management, as well as any placement policies you may

have created under Workload Placement - Inventory view — check that the date slider on the information panels can show past historical data
