Update
What a great update presented by Lois Schick,
everyone was talking about how much they learned.
We all have a better idea of how to protect our
patients and our licenses.
I am really looking forward to the rest of the
year as your newly appointed Vice-President,
President Elect. I will work very hard to make our
next year’s update as good as those in the past have
been.
It was very nice seeing old friends and
meeting new ones. Thanks to the ASPAN members
who sent me articles for the newsletter, it’s very
hard to write everything by yourself. If every
member would send me one article I would have
enough for the whole year if I spread them out.
I look forward to all you send.

Introduction for Newsletter
I want to make sure we all take the time to thank Charlotte West for her excellent
service as our INSPAN Board President for 2009-2010. She is such a great mentor
and leader, it is an honor to follow in her footsteps and I am grateful to have such
an inspiring role model to follow. I want to thank everyone who attended and
helped with all the planning and organizing of 2010 Fall update, wasn’t Lois great?
Karen Garten our new Vice president is already gathering information and start-
ing to plan the 2011 Fall update!
We just finished our November Board meeting and have some new and exciting
ideas we are implementing this year. Do you attend ASPAN’s National Confer-
ence? This year we have approved to offer 5 new $500.00 scholarships! Are you a
CAPA or CPAN? Once per year we will be giving 36 $25.00 re imbursements for
our annual Fall Update. We are going to be offering 10 $100.00 scholarship
awards for reimbursement for seminars so keep your eyes peeled to our new IN-
SPAN website, newsletters and emails for more information on how to apply or
nominate someone.
Just a couple notes about me, I currently live in Evansville, IN and I am employed
by St Mary’s Medical Center as a Phase I, PACU RN and when available will work at
the Cross Pointe Surgicare as a Phase II, PACU RN. I currently hold a diploma in
nursing and attend the University of Southern Indiana working diligently in their
RN to BSN to MSN education programs and I have my CPAN. I am passionately
dedicated and committed to education and the advancement of the nursing pro-
fession especially in Evidence Based Practice and Research and I am honored and
humbled to be a representative for Indiana Perianesthesia Nurses. If you have any
ideas, questions or concerns, please email me at [email protected]
Let’s work together to make this year another great one!

Message for Components
Greetings from ABPANC!
I am Kathy Paskewitz and I am your ABPANC Region 3 Director and an ABPANC Board of Director, along with Teresa Emmons. (Indiana) ABPANC is your primary source for CPAN and CAPA certification. I believe our patients deserve the highest quality of care that a certified nurse provides. As an organization, ABPANC is leading the charge to raise the bar in patient care and outcomes even higher by encouraging all perianesthesia nurses to earn the CPAN and/or CAPA credentials. I am saying “and/or” because we have had many nurses take both exams the same day and be successful. I personally challenge each perianesthesia nurse to take the next step.
Visit our website at www.cpancapa.org to review the Certification Handbook
thoroughly. We have gone green so you will need to access it online. ABPANC
offers $100 dollars off the registration fee to take the exam if you are a member
of ASPAN. You would need to be a member at least a month before you register.
I wish everyone who is registered to take the Fall Examinations much success! The Recertification process is streamlined, online and easy to complete. This handbook is also online as well as the recertification electronic log system. There are many ways to earn CEUs that do not cost anything to maintain our certification. We need pictures of certified nurses in their practice settings for our Certification Celebration Luncheon slide show. Please send pictures to us of you at your best along with a photo release form to [email protected] Volunteer opportunities:
Certification Coach – form study groups now for the Spring exams –Registration window runs from January 10 through March 7. Again refer to the Certification handbook Appendix E for all of the deadline dates
If you are certified, write questions for the Certification exams – receive contact hours – tutorial on line. Item writing drive taking place now.
5
ABPANC BOD has 4 open positions and nominations are due by November 30th.
Practice Exams are new as of July 16- virtually unlimited number of 50 question ex-aminations at $35 each. Approved by ASPAN for contact hours either 1.25 or 2.5. Awards:
Advocacy Award –recognizes the individual who has provided exemplary care to patients – do not need to be certified to nominate your colleague who is certified.
Leadership Circle – 100% nurses in unit are certified Shining Star Award – Component meets certain criteria one being - need to have
at least 25% or more of the component members certified (State how many members in component and number who are certified- can find this informa-tion out from the Component Membership chair) We personally invite you to review the criteria for the Shining star and if your Component qualifies, com-plete the application and submit by February 1st. (place application in an enve-lope and present to the President)
As of this Fall we have a total of 9,046 certified nurses. ASPAN has 14,024 members
as of the end of July. This means there are approximately 4,948 potential certified
nurses out there that we still need to reach. This does not take into consideration all
the perianesthesia nurses in the country that are still not members of ASPAN or cer-
tified. My colleagues, we have work to do! If you are not yet certified, perhaps to-
day and during this year of ABPANC’s 25th anniversary you can start to focus your
passion and take the next step.
ABPANC’s President’s theme is CPAN/CAPA Certification is Nursing Passion in Ac-
tion. Put your passion for perianesthesia nursing and caring for your patients into
action! Bottom line - Doesn’t every patient deserve a certified nurse at the bed-
side?
Thank you for inviting me- please visit the ABPANC table to learn more about certi-
fication, network and to make us aware of any questions you may have.
Thank You,
Kathy Paskewitz

SAFETY FIRST
SEVERE SHORTAGE OF
PROPOFOL IN US
Right now there is a severe shortage of
propofol in the US, a product is being
imported and sold by APP
Pharmaceuticals. These labels make it
harder to determine the mg. amounts.
The imported product is manufactured
by Fresenius Kabi and labeled according
to European standards, highlighting the
strength as 1%, which makes it quite
difficult to determine that it contains
10mg/ml. To reduce the risk of
calculation errors, hospitals using the
imported product should add an
auxiliary label to draw attention to the
mg/ml strength to each container
before dispensing. However pharmacy
labels should never obscure critical
information on the label.
Inaccurate dosing of insulin withdrawn from a
pen cartridge
Some nurse’s were concerned that their patient’s
were not getting the correct dose of insulin from
their insulin pens. One nurse dialed the pen to 10
units and injected it into a standard insulin
syringe to measure how much would have
reached the patient. She found the insulin
syringe contained only 5 units of insulin. She
repeated this twice and got the same results
each time. They notified the pharmacist who
went to the unit to investigate, he took an
unopened pen and withdrew 10 units and got
exactly 10 units in return. He then withdrew 10
units from the opened pen and got 5 units out of
it. Upon inspection of the used pen he noticed a
large air bubble, he knew this would cause a
variance in amount of insulin drawn up. Once air
gets into the pen the dial may not deliver the
appropriate amount of insulin, it may also
contaminate the rest of the insulin in the pen.

Research Committee Report:
Have you ever questioned why you do what you do in your current prac-
tice? I know I do (often). Is it the most efficient? Does it work? Is it the
best for this patient? Evidence Based Practice is where nursing of the fu-
ture is heading. It is not only to validate our current practice, but also to
find new, more effective and safer treatment for our patients. Research
and EBP is in the beginning phases of development for INSPAN and I am
excited to serving as the Chair for 2010-2011!
If anyone is currently working on any EBP or Research Projects, please
email me your abstracts/PICO questions, and thoughts.
Currently our practice is using the Number scale for documenting Pain in
the Phase I PACU, general anesthesia adult patient. Is this your practice as
well? Do you believe this is the most effective and safest practice? Are you
using a different scale Please email me your answers at kyrastew-
Do you want to be a part of the future of nursing? There are no require-
ments of previous experience or knowledge needed, or degrees. You just
need to have a desire to be a part of discovering the truth about best prac-
tices in Perianesthesia Nursing!
I can’t wait to begin sharing and growing our Perianesthesia nursing prac-
tice together!

Up and Comers: The Path to Goal Fulfillment
A nurse came to work in our PACU and she enjoyed a challenge. She was well-liked by her co-workers and got along well with everyone, from the environ-mental service personnel to the anesthesiologists. She was a real go- getter and an integral part of our healthcare team. She was entering that period of her life when her children were entering secondary schools. She pictured her-self at a crossroads, with opportunities yet to explore. She thought about the road less traveled and then made the decision to take a risk and pursue her dream of becoming more involved; in seeking to become certified in the perainaesthesia specialty.
When eligible, she and a PACU colleague sat for the CPAN examination and left the test site feeling miserable and deflated. They were thrilled beyond be-lief when they both received the great news that they had passed! They both agreed that all the hard work and studying had paid of. This was however, only a stepping stone for more professional accomplishments yet to come. The fol-lowing year, our nurse heard that her director had tapped her as a potential candidate for a Component office. Her friend advised her that perhaps she had enough challenges at the moment with a daughter graduating from college and a son graduating from high school. Did I mention that our nurse enjoys a challenge?
So, our nurse jumped right in and assumed the position of Vice President/President-Elect of her Component (by default). She attended her first Leader-ship Development Institute (LDI) shortly thereafter, where she was chosen by her component leader to become a member of a new initiative called Up & Comers.
This program enabled our nurse, and many others to grow into leadership roles within ASPAN that remain only dreams in many other organizations. By working with a mentor, Up & Comers allows you to pursue your interests in any direction: public speaking, committee chair, journalism, leadership, and most importantly mentorship.
15
I experienced first hand this marvelous opportunity and if you haven’t already guessed, I am “our nurse”, Tanya Spiering, BSN, RN, CPAN, current Regional Director for Region 5 for ASPAN. In addition, I can proudly state that I am a Past President of CBSPAN, and an active, participating member of the Clinical Practice Committee. My accomplishments don’t stop there. I am also Co-author of ASPAN’s Safety Toolkit. Most importantly, I can boast that I am a Charter Member and Graduate of ASPAN’s Up & Comer’s Mentorship Program. My professional career has progressed beyond my wildest dreams.
I am no longer standing at that crossroads, wondering which road to travel. I have proudly chosen to continue to be guided by other ASPAN leaders, as I spread my wings to experience leadership at new heights within ASPAN. My journey has not ended. In many ways, it has just begun. I know that whatever goal I set and whatever position I choose to pursue, there will always be an ASPAN mentor ready to guide me. On the other hand, I have also become a mentor and readily share my knowledge and leadership with others in order to get them started on their own personal journey.
Won’t you consider becoming “that” nurse in your practice setting? Won’t you challenge yourself to study hard and become certified? Won’t you decide to take that road less traveled and pursue a more active and adventurous role within your specialty organization?
If the answer is yes, I invite you to join the Up and Comer’s program. Contact your Regional Director for more information on how you, too can be a part of this exciting journey! You will certainly be glad you did!
Fondly,
Tanya Spiering

Membership Committee Report
This is going to be a busy year of the committee and we hope the members
will give the INSPAN board feedback on your thoughts and suggestions. The
INSPAN website is up and functioning with information for the members on
educational opportunities , scholarships, district meetings, and the new
Officers. The Website is updated bi-monthly at the minimum for future
information. Please log in and give suggestions at www.inspan.org.
A mass mailing will happen to all members in January to update everyone and
just touch base on what ASPAN and INSPAN has to offer. Since July new
members have received a welcome letter which totals 41 new members.
There has been a problem of some members not receiving their e-mails from
INSPAN. This is our main way to communicate with our members. The e-
mails used are acquired from the ASPAN National Database that you provided.
Some members have work e-mails that have been blocked and firewalls which
prevent the INSPAN information from getting through to you. We encourage
you to supply both ASPAN and INSPAN with your home e-mail address if at all
possible.
