DATA DEVELOPMENT AND PRESENTATION
This report was made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Collier County to the
Johnson School of Business at Hodges University.
This report was complied by the Johnson School of Business, Hodges University, Naples, FL; November 21, 2014.
January 2015
Friends:
Observations about our region’s strengths and challenges come from many quarters and are often based
on perception. When we created our first Vital Signs report in 2012, we recognized the importance of
being among the first to look at our regions’ strengths and weaknesses objectively and of basing our
grantmaking activities on the realities supported by that data. Vital Signs 2014-2015 is an even more robust
tool that provides all of us with a broader and deeper presentation of the facts. It is with great excitement
that we offer this new, data-rich and very objective look at Collier County.
Whether your interests are primarily related to education, the need for human services, the arts, our
environment, health, or the issues facing women and girls, Vital Signs 2014-2015 provides a comprehensive
look at the quality of life in Collier County. We launched this effort to provide our staff, our grantmaking
committees, our civic leaders and the broader public with a tool to assess need in our community.
Vital Signs 2014-2015 is a conversation starter. We all hope that Vital Signs 2014-2015 will be used by
planners, policymakers, nonprofit leadership and grantmakers like the Community Foundation of Collier
County to move us forward.
This report reveals a great deal about where we stand; it is up to all of us to work together to discover
where we can go and how we will get there…together.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTYVital Signs 2014-2015
Vital Signs 2014-2015 represents a process by which standardized, measurable indicators are used to
inform our grantmaking staff and committees about specific needs so that they can determine the
Foundation’s primary areas of funding. The indicator data used for Vital Signs, a data-collection exercise
launched by the Community Foundation of Collier County in 2012 to measure basic needs in Collier
County, created a baseline for the indicator groups researched and updated in Vital Signs 2014-2015.
PRINCIPLES GUIDING THE PROJECT
Vital Signs 2014-2015 is designed to accomplish the following:
• Select indicators from a broad framework.
• Identify indicators that describe characteristics of the population, economy, and quality of life in
Collier County.
• Use easily accessible, recent data. If possible, use indicator data no more than three years old that can
also be regularly updated.
• Collect data from existing, centralized sources. We did not conduct new research or collect data from
individual communities within Collier County.
• Produce a product that is useful to a wide audience.
• Prepare a report that (1) is easy for a variety of users to understand, (2) can be used to guide program
and grantmaking decisions, (3) inspires the community to act.
• Provide regular updates.
• After the initial release in Fall 2014, produce timely updates to assess progress and trends. A quarterly
update of five to ten major indicators will be provide by Hodges University and sued by the Foundation
to revise the report to Foundation noting any changes to that data. Quarterly updates are due on
February 1, May 1, and August 1 of 2015.

ABOUT THE CHARTS AND GRAPHS
The format of the report is intended to let the data speak for itself. The data and information from Hodges
University will be provided in mostly tables and charts with short, explanatory introductions. Unlike some
reports of this kind, there are neither letter grades nor up and down arrows to compare to previous years
or other areas of Florida or the US. Every chart/table will have a citation and reference.
Hodges University and the Foundation have been careful to collect, analyze, and present data from a
variety of sources to prepare this report. Hodges University and the Community Foundation of Collier
County have judged its data sources to be reliable, but it was not possible to authenticate all data. If
careful readers of the report discover data or typographical errors, the Community Foundation of Collier
County welcomes this feedback.
