In America we call it Vital Records.

In England they call it Civil Registration.

Types of Vital Records:

Birth and/or Christening Marriage Divorce Death and/or Burial

VITAL RECORDS

Contain a wealth of Genealogical information. Civil governments have created records of births, marriages, divorces, and deaths.

We call these “VITAL RECORDS” because they refer to essential events in a person’s life.

BIRTH RECORDS

Generally contain: Child’s name. Sex Date and Place of birth.

Records of the 20th Century provide additional details: Name of hospital. Place of Birth and Occupation of Parents. Marital status of Mother and sometimes Mother’s Maiden Name and # of other children born to Mother.

MARRIAGE INTENTIONS:

Notice of an intended marriage published by CivilAuthority.Intentions were recorded in town meeting books and published for a period of time prior to the marriage ceremony.

MARRIAGE RECORDS

There are a number of documents that have beenused in the U.S. in connection with the civilAuthorization and registration of marriages.MARRIAGE LICENSE : document issued by Civil authority authorizing the performance of a

marriage. Usually includes:• Names of both parties. • Date and Place of issuance of the license.• Signature & Title of the issuing official.

Marriage license-Continued:

In some cases it can include the ages or dates and places of birth of the bride and groom, their addresses, occupation and the names of their parents. Records issued by the county or town. MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE: Official document stating the marriage took

place.

MARRIAGE RETURN:

Report of the facts of a marriage returned to CivilAuthority by the Officiator of the marriage.

Names of Bride and Groom. Date and Place of Marriage.

Signature and Title of Officiator. Sometimes a Minister or Justice of the Peace would file marriage returns on an annual basis and some were never filed at all.

MARRIAGE REGISTER:

Marriages performed in a civil jurisdiction.

Entry MAY include simply the names of the bride and groom and the date of marriage.These records found at the town and county level.

The town and county offices often destroyed themarriage licenses and returns after the facts ofthe marriage was recorded in a marriage register.

REGISTER OF MARRIAGES

MARRIAGE BOND

Document executed to guarantee that no impedimentsExisted to an intended marriage.

MARRIAGE BANNS:Notice of intended marriage published by clergy.

Often read before the congregation on 3 successiveSundays.

CONSENT:

Sometimes courthouse records will include a documentGiving the consent of a parent or guardian for theMarriage of a minor child. Useful in identifying the Father of the bride or groom and indicating anApproximate age of the person that the consent wasRequired.

REMEMBER!

Marriage Bonds, Licenses, Banns and Intentions are

Not evidence of Marriage-only that marriage was

Planned.
