(AP)~A Navy pilot who risked his life by refus- ing to abandon his powerless jet over the Buffalo metropolitan area has received a commenda f ion from the chief of naval opera tkms. Lt. Jack De Wenter, a member of the Navy's crack flight demon- stration team, the Blue Angels, rode his plane to the ground Sat- urday after the engine suddenly flailed. The plane, an F11F Tiger jet, overshot a runway at Buffalo Municipal Airport, crashed through a fence, skidded onto a highway intersection near a filling station and caught fire. Firemen quickly put out the flames. The 30-year-old flyer from Bkomington, 111., escaped unhurt. •WeU Dow' The six-man Blue Angels team was giving a demonstration about a mile from the airport when the accident occurred. Navy spokesmen said it would have ben the normal thing for the pilot to bail out. But De Wenter said he felt he had to stay w i t h the plane. "There were just too doggone many houses down mere for me to abandon it" Navy Chief Adm. Arieigh A. Burke messaged De Wenter yes- terday: "Your magnificent action .. M landing your aircraft rather than hazarding the lives of the civilian populace reflects the highest credit on yourself, Blue Angels and the Navy. VERNON CENTER - Earl M. Pilot Risked His Life to Save Others

E. M. Slaughter, Vernon Center, Succumbs at 71

BUFFALO, N. Y. (AP)~A Navy pilot who risked his life by refusing to abandon his powerless jet over the Buffalo metropolitan area has received a commenda f ion from the chief of naval opera tkms.

Lt. Jack De Wenter, a member of the Navy's crack flight demonstration team, the Blue Angels, rode his plane to the ground Saturday after the engine suddenly flailed.

The plane, an F11F Tiger jet, overshot a runway at Buffalo Municipal A i r p o r t , crashed through a fence, skidded onto a highway intersection near a filling station and caught fire.

Firemen quickly put out the flames. The 30-year-old flyer from Bkomington, 111., escaped unhurt.

•WeU Dow' The six-man Blue Angels team

was giving a demonstration about a mile from the airport when the accident occurred. „

Navy spokesmen said it would have ben the normal thing for the pilot to bail out.

But De Wenter said he felt he had to stay w i t h the plane. "There were just too doggone many houses down mere for me to abandon i t "

Navy Chief Adm. Arieigh A. Burke messaged De Wenter yesterday: "Your magnificent action . . M landing your aircraft rather than hazarding the lives of the civilian populace reflects the highest credit on yourself, Blue Angels and the Navy.
