As TriVita turns 13 this year, there is plenty to celebrate! Recently I was honoured along with dozens of other TriVita staffers for 5 and 10+ years of service with the company. Looking around the room and seeing so many long-time employees from departments all over the company was very rewarding, and certainly speaks volumes about what a unique company TriVita is. Being a part of the Ellison family companies a few years before TriVita was even in existence has allowed me to share in a dream that first began in Founder Michael Ellison’s heart. I can still remember when Michael shared that dream with me many years ago to start a company that would change the way people thought about their health. I listened intensely as he said, “I want to take this message of wellness to the world!”

I have seen so many changes in the company since its inception – and experienced first-hand the strong growth that has now taken us into 14 countries! When you visit trivita.com, besides your own Australia and New Zealand, you’ll have the option to select the European countries of Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In Asia you may select Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. And of course North America covers the United States and Canada. People across the world are now able to address their inflammatory conditions with our Nopalea™. If you have family or friends in these areas, be sure and tell them about this amazing drink that is changing lives around the globe.

We strive to provide informative, helpful information that will help you on your own wellness journey. If there are particular topics of interest you’d like to see in upcoming issues of our digital magazine, please write me directly: [email protected]’s to your health!

M ost of us will agree that our beliefs dictate our behaviours. So here are

several questions we should consider as we think about health:

1. Do we believe we can live our lives full of energy and vitality until we draw our last breath?

2. Do we believe we have to suffer from debilitating diseases and conditions as we age?

3. Do we believe that most disease and illness is something we get or something the body does?

One thought we can embrace is what we see around us today in an aging population does not need to be our belief of our own health as we age. No, we are living in an age of change, and one thing that must change is the way we think about health. Treatment of conditions is so ingrained in us that it has become a part of our beliefs. But again I pose the question: Are most illnesses and diseases something we get or something the body does? When we will accept a new way of thinking about most disease conditions, then we will begin to explore new opportunities and ways to achieve optimal health.

It is your body; you should know it well and support it with balanced and targeted nutrients along with emotional and spiritual nurturing.

For example, from all that I can find in disease research, you do not get cancer or heart disease. They are not contagious conditions we catch, but in most cases they are something the body does when it is not cared for in a balanced way. That is not intended to be offensive or critical, but only to bring about a much more accurate way of thinking as it relates to those diseases.

Consider inflammation: Inflammation is something the body does, not some-thing we get. When inflammation becomes chronic, we know from both medical science and experience that it creates a weakened state – setting up other opportunities for the body to manifest weakness. In working with

your body to balance and cool it, amazing results can happen.

I would like to encourage you to embrace your body as a complex system that needs loving and honourable support. (Your body is God’s temple.) You will be amazed at what the body can do to strengthen itself and create energy and vitality to help you fulfil your life purpose.

Let me leave you with a thought to ponder: Is what you do to support good health and well-being in alignment with what your body is designed to do – or are you simply attempting to treat bad things the body manifests?

You can live your life in a robust and energetic way until you draw your last breath because you are wonderfully designed by your Creator!

Scott Conard, M.D.

Scott Conard, M.D., DABFM, FAAFP, has more than 20 years of successful clinical practice, research and leadership experience. Through his Texas-based practice in the U.S. and books he’s authored, he empowers people to take control of their health.

By Scott Conard, M.D.

A: I love this question, because the answer is such a definite “Yes!” Study after study has shown that

B-12 plays a crucial role in important brain functions, from memory to concentration to mood. Now, the latest research out of Australia suggests that taking a B-12 supple-ment can help improve both short-term and long-term memory.

The Australian study looked at over 700 people ages 60 to 74. Every day, study partici-pants took either a supplement with B-12 and folic acid, or a sugar pill (no one knew which one they were taking, of course). At the end of two years, the whole group was given mental tests for memory, attention and speed. The results?

Those who took the B-12 supplements scored better on the mental tests than those who took the sugar pills.

“… an important role in promoting healthy aging and mental well-being…”

Calling the results “encouraging,” the study author, a researcher at Australian National University, predicted more B benefits in the future. The vitamins “may have an important role in promoting healthy aging and mental well-being,” said Janine Walker, “as well as sustaining good cognitive functioning for longer on a community-wide scale.”

This new research is encouraging to all of us who recognize what a difference B-12 can

make to our health and well-being. In my medical practice, I’ve seen people’s lives turn around – in areas of memory, mood and mental sharpness – just by correcting their B-12 deficiencies.

Are you worried about memory, yours or a loved one’s? Be sure to consult a healthcare professional if these issues are cropping up:

• Memory loss is disrupting daily life. If tasks that used to be routine, such as balancing a chequebook or bathing, become difficult, action should be taken.

• Lapses are becoming more frequent. It isn’t normal to forget where you parked every day, or to forget appointments over and over.

• Well-known things are being forgotten. Forgetting the name of a close friend, forgetting entire conversations or frequently repeating yourself could be significant.

• There are signs of confusion. Getting lost in a familiar place can be an early sign of a serious memory problem.

Memory, mental energy and sharper mental focus are key benefits of supplementing with TriVita’s Sublingual B-12. If you’re not already taking Sublingual B-12, I strongly recommend that you consider this premium quality supplement.

Our body is composed of trillions of cells – perhaps 60 to 100 trillion. Each cell has many, many functions.

To carry out those functions a cell needs fuel, primarily in the form of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, water and oxygen. A cell has tiny machines inside to burn this fuel and create energy.

The cell types contain a different number of energy-burning machines inside, from just a few to hundreds.

The conversion of fuel into energy is called metabolism. The Greek word that describes metabolism is a picture of wood being burned to create heat and light – basic forms of energy. When you burn wood you create not only energy but also smoke and waste in the form of ash. The same thing happens when our cells burn protein, carbohydrate and fat – we create cellular waste.

Our body has a simple rule when it comes to waste: the solution to pollution is dilution. Our cells dilute waste in water inside the cell and push it outside the cell into the lymph vessels. Our body dilutes this waste further by increasing the lymph fluid outside the cell.

If the toxins increase within the cell, it may become imbalanced and form a focal point for disease. If toxins accumulate outside the cell, it will suffocate as nutrients are prevented from getting in and more waste is hindered from getting out. The cells either die prematurely or become the focus for disease.

Nopalea™ aids in the health of the cell by establishing the proper mineral ratio and balance inside and outside the cell membrane. This allows nutrients to get in and waste to get out. This keeps the cell healthy and promotes longevity and vitality within our cells.

A simple, friendly gesture made Danielle E. realise that she had severe health problems. “I remember sitting with some friends one day and one of them gently poked my arm,” recalls

this Felixstow, SA, AUS resident. “The pain that shot through me was sharp and intense. It was like nothing I had felt before. That was 10 years ago, and I continued to suffer from unexplainable, widespread pain. Yet, I just accepted that my pain threshold was low, and I would just have to live with it.”

Then, in May 2011 while she was working as a pharmaceuti-cal rep, Danielle caught a virus. The pain was so intense that she was bedridden for six weeks. Danielle was only able to get out of bed long enough to go to the bathroom or see a doctor. “After numerous tests, I was finally diagnosed with a condition that causes widespread pain, stiffness and tenderness in the muscles, tendons and joints throughout the body,” she says. “I suspect I had this condition for quite a long time.”

Treatment options are limited for this condition. Danielle tried massage, but this caused extreme pain, particularly in the lower back where the nerve endings were more con-centrated. Exercise was also tiring and debilitating. Large dosages of over-the-counter pain relievers offered little relief.

Extreme reliefDanielle found out about Nopalea when she was researching effective products for her inflammatory condition. Nothing else was working, so she decided to try it.

here’s a breakdown of her recovery:

Danielle first noticed that she wasn’t getting as much bloating. By week three, Nopalea really proved itself. Danielle’s back pain was dramatically reduced and she could now move without agonising discomfort. “Just to test this, I went to see my massage therapist who was finally able to do deep tissue work without me screaming in pain.”

Now that Danielle has been taking Nopalea daily for several months, she is thrilled to report that the pain from her condi-tion has been reduced. She has also gotten great results from TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, Energy Now!® and Vital C™. “You won’t find a bigger advocate for TriVita’s products than me,” says an ecstatic Danielle. “I sleep better, I feel better, I have more energy and most importantly, I don’t suffer from terrible daily pain. I owe my good health to Nopalea and TriVita’s wonderful selection of products.*

One twosome’s terrific Sublingual B-12 storyAudrey and Rob L. harmonize about the benefits Audrey’s storyAudrey L. is a semi-retired registered comprehensive nurse with a variety of painful disabilities. Nopalea™ has definitely helped her with these conditions, but she has also gotten valuable assistance from TriVita’s Sublingual B-12.

“I have had B-12 injections and tried regular B-12 Vitamin tab-lets, which are very expensive in Australia,” she says. “As a nurse, I know that B-12 effectiveness can be affected by medication and other conditions. As a result I was unable to retain information and had short-term memory loss, which was very debilitating.”

Since taking TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, her concentration has dramati-cally improved. “My friends are just amazed at this quick improvement after taking Sublingual B-12,” Audrey exclaims. “My husband, Rob, is also so grateful for my improvement. I love the taste of these B-12 tablets. I cannot get over how effective and affordable they are. I am truly a prod-uct of the product!”

Rob’s storyRob is 55 years old and drives a truck for a living. “Living in a fast-paced city the size of Brisbane means you have to be on your game mentally, physically and spiritually,” Rob says. “Just prior to taking Sublingual B-12, I found myself experiencing major problems, especially lack of concentration. I was always tired and even considered resigning from my company.”

Rob used to hate going to work, always complaining about his job and dreading waking up at 4 a.m. and getting home 10-12 hours later. “I was unable to enjoy songwriting, which is my passion,” he recalls. “I couldn’t concentrate on anything because I was so tired and irritable. I would just doze off to sleep and then the alarm would go off and my routine would start all over again.”

Then Rob was introduced to Sublingual B-12, which has impacted his life in a big way. “I feel like a great weight of concrete has been removed from my head,” he emphasizes. “I am alert, my reaction time is so much quicker and my thinking is precise and clearer.”

Rob has also discovered that his song-writing has taken on a new dimension; the songs now have more scope and shades, not to mention dynamics. “I am not too tired after a day’s work to sit down and compose or just tinkle away on the piano or guitar thanks to Sublingual B-12.”

“Today I wake refreshed, I sleep well, my concentration has improved and my

driving experience is much more pleasurable,” he adds. “Now I recommend TriVita’s Sublingual B-12 to all my colleagues.”*

The definition of “unique” is: Being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. That certainly describes Nopalea! Even pure

cactus juice cannot compare to Nopalea.

Nopalea is unique for a number of reasons: first and foremost, the Nopal fruit in Nopalea is harvested in the Sonoran Desert of North America by natives that have revered the healing properties of the fruit for thousands of years. TriVita has an agreement with the harvesters, to help protect the resources of the Sonoran Desert as we treasure its precious natural resource.

But, as you may have noticed, there are other ingredients in Nopalea. Many of the ingredients have direct therapeutic value. I put them there for a reason: because of the causes of inflammation.

Remember, inflammation can be caused by trauma, toxins, deficiencies and stress. It manifests as Rubor (redness), Tumor (swelling), Calor (heat), Dolor (pain) and Functio Laesa (loss of function).

Inflammation may lead to infection; so, I put in the highest fruit sources of mannose to help protect against bad bacteria from adhering to inflamed tissues. Further, the “calor” of inflammation often signals infection and causes reduced circulation.

I included the ingredients with the highest nitric oxide potential to open circulation so your body can battle potential infections without causing more inflammation.

Inflammation also leads to premature cell death. Reducing inflammation, therefore, is an incomplete step if you do not have ingredients included that promote actual repair. When a cell dies, it releases a chemical trail that signals the brain to release growth hormone, which triggers several tissues to release stem cells, which follow the chemical trail back to the origin of the signal to replace the cell. Several ingredients in Nopalea participate in this repair process.

Helping maintain vitalityAt conception, cells begin to divide into what will become a person. Along the way the cells “differentiate” – that is, they become different tissues. Some become the heart, others the brain and so on until the complete human is formed. These are called “embryonic” stem cells.

Once a person is formed, the human body uses stem cells to replace cells. You see, every cell in your body has a life span. When that cell dies it needs to be replaced. Stem cells made in your bone marrow and other places in your body follow a chemical trail back to the place where the cell dies and “differentiate” into the type of cell that died.

What makes Nopalea™ unique?

This article is intended for educational purposes only.

How is Nopalea™ made? When the Nopal cactus blooms and ripens, it lights up the desert with its brilliant pink fruit. It’s at this point when our harvest begins – just as it has for thousands of years by the ancient peoples of the Sonoran Desert.

Low-impact harvesting for high-impact wellness By following the sustainable wildcrafting

techniques learned from native Sonoran ancestors, we take only what’s needed from the extraordinary Nopal cactus. That means we take only a small amount of fruit from each cactus, leaving the majority of it to supply

nourishment for desert animals and ensure reseeding for an abundant crop in the future. It’s our way of giving back, respecting the cycle of life and celebrating the harvest season.

Immediately after our harvest, the Nopal fruits are transported to our state-of-the-art processing plant in the USA. Here, the fruits are juiced and blended with other natural

ingredients to create a deliciously unique, concentrated wellness drink for Australia. Plus we

use aseptic bottling techniques (low heat and rapid cooling) to sterilize and preserve the fruits’ purity, freshness and potency of its powerful Bioflavonoids.

Six of the ingredients in Nopalea are known to promote potent stem cell production.

Encouraging cell developmentNutrients are required for making cells (including stem cells). If you are deficient in any critical nutrient at the moment you create stem cells one of two things will happen: either your bone marrow will refuse the order to meet that quota of stem cells, or the cells will be made without the nutrients critical for the health and longevity of the cell. When a deficient cell matures, it becomes the target for inflammation and disease.

Cells need nutrients. Nopalea contains nutrients known to promote healthy cells. Without all of the appropriate nutrients onboard at all times we will not be able to make as many healthy cells as we lose in a day.

Reducing inflammationNutrients serve as the foundation for stem cells. However, specific nutrients also “up-regulate” or stimulate the production of stem cells. At an anti-aging conference I attended, six stem-cell stimulating nutrients were identified. As one speaker neared the end of his presentation he talked about “a curious little Bioflavonoid” found in great abundance in the Nopal cactus. It turns out that Bioflavonoids encourage the production of stem cells.

More healthy stem cells close the gap between the numbers of cells that die and the number of cells we replace every day. Nopalea reduces inflammation, discourages the causes of inflammation and institutes cell repair and replacement. It is truly a unique product – unlike anything else!

Nopalea is one-of-a-kind!

I nflammation is normally part of a healthy immune response, intended to keep us safe. However, when too much

inflammation is present in the body, it begins to play a crucial role in the advancement of a number of major diseases.

The good news is that you have immense power to control the inflammatory response based upon what you eat or don’t eat. Certain foods promote inflammation, while others fight it. Try to work in a few of the suggestions below and see how you begin to feel differently.

1. Turmeric: This is a powerful dietary spice for autoimmune-related inflammation and

pain. Turmeric is also a fantastic source of indirect antioxidants, which means that it boosts and stimulates the body’s own production of antioxidants for hours after consumption.

Some of the longest-living people in the world are in

Okinawa, Japan. Their longevity is credited to their ability to manage the inflammation process. One of the ways they do this is by drinking turmeric tea daily.

2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The Omega-3/Omega-6 balance is

crucial to reduce inflammation. Many people have a very high ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3, such as 20:1. The

recommended ratio is closer to 2:1. Increase your amounts of

hemp oil, hemp seeds, flax oil, flax seeds, walnuts, wild-caught salmon and fish oil if you feel you aren’t getting enough Omega-3s, or take a high-quality supplement.

3. Fermented Foods: These foods help build immunity and control infections that may be linked to the underlying causes of inflammation. Examples of fermented foods include yogurt, raw sauerkraut, kombucha tea, kefir, marinated vegetables (kim chi) and miso.

4. Rancid Fats: Be careful not to heat oil to the point of

smoking. When oil is heated beyond its smoke point, fat oxidation occurs, which turns it pro-inflammatory.

Must-know microwave facts

It’s best to use only glass and ceramic containersNew studies suggest that microwaving edibles in plastic can pollute food with a variety of chemicals. Most plastic items, such as margarine and yogurt tubs, takeout packages and storage containers are not designed to withstand the heat of microwaving.

Less water and timeThere’s no reason to add water to vegetables or anything else that already contains a lot of moisture naturally. Also, use as little time as possible for cooking. Both steps will help minimise nutrient loss.

Cover upUse a microwave-safe lid or wrap to retain surface moisture. Also, leave it slightly ajar to let steam escape. The moist heat will help destroy harmful bacteria and ensure uniform cooking.

ReplaceLeaks from old or overused microwave ovens can happen if the oven door is damaged or doesn’t seal properly. So, regularly check your microwave for defects and replace if needed.

Tips to increase safety and reduce nutrient loss

5. Broccoli: High in Vitamin C and calcium, broccoli helps reduce eye inflammation.

6. Soaked Walnuts: Walnuts are high

in Vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acids. If you want to take this a step

further, you can soak them for a few hours.

Soaking nuts and seeds makes them easier to digest, cuts the fat in half and increases the protein by two-thirds.

7. Excess Alcohol: Limit alcohol to 3-5 drinks per week and choose wine over beer. Too much alcohol can

cause changes in the intestinal lining, allowing bacteria

to pass through into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation.

8. Onions and Garlic: Besides being great

flavour enhancers, onions and garlic are high in

quercetin, a potent antioxidant that helps fight inflammation.

9. Spinach/Kale: These green powerhouses are loaded with carotenoids, an inflammation-reducing antioxidant.

10. Parsley: Parsley is one of the most nutrient-rich, detoxifying herbs we have. It acts as an anti-inflam- matory, an anti-spasmodic and a diuretic, helping conditions from colic to indigestion.

10 diet-based ways to fight

inflammation naturally

Ingredients

1 bunch kale, washed and de-stemmed

½ cup extra virgin olive oil, split into two portions

2 tablespoons sea salt

Juice from one lemon

Seeds from one pomegranate

¼ cup pine nuts

½ cup burrata cheese, shredded

Directions

Take half of the olive oil and the 2 tablespoons of sea salt and mix them together in a small bowl. Use that mixture to massage the leaves of the kale. This will soften it so that it tastes much better.

Chop kale finely, add pomegranate seeds, pine nuts and cheese. Toss with the remaining olive oil and lemon and serve.

Lacramioara (Lily) Burlacu, M.D., has lectured in Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa, CAN, and now lives in Wantima, Victoria, AUS. She holds Master’s degrees in exercise physiology and pharma-cology, and pursues research in obesity and hormone disorders.

W e smile when we remember what Grandma used to say: “Don’t eat too much candy, you’ll get

diabetes.” She was almost right – but what she couldn’t foresee is that diabetes would be linked with inflammation and obesity to create a dangerous hybrid: “Diabesity.”

For years, we thought that high blood sugar was only a consequence of diabetes and not also one of its causes. We used to think that diabetes mysteriously occurs in some unlucky individuals. However, recent research shows that repeatedly over-eating, especially food rich in fast carbohydrates (sugars), leads to Type 2 diabetes via obesity. Today, about 346 million people worldwide have diabetes; that figure is expected to double between 2005 and 2030.

Let’s quickly review the basics. The defini-tion of diabetes is having too much blood sugar. Our bodies maintain blood sugar levels through insulin, a protein secreted by the pancreas. Trouble comes in two ways: when not enough insulin is secreted by the pancreas (what happens in Type 1 diabetes), and when insulin can’t do its job properly, because cells become “insulin resistant” (what happens in Type 2 diabetes, the more common form).

When we eat a meal rich in sugars (“fast carbohydrates” like processed foods high in refined sugar and white flour), our bodies

produce insulin. The more sugars the body receives the more insulin it produces – and the more fat it stores. Here’s where the second half of the word “diabesity” comes in: Obesity.

Fat tissue, hormones and inflammationIt’s a myth that fat tissue serves only as storage, and is inactive tissue. In fact, fat tissue is very active, and functions like an enormous endocrine gland, releasing a number of hormones and immunity messengers called cytokines. When fat tissue increases and obesity develops, this promotes low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance. This inflammation response is one of the ways the body tries to prevent additional accumulation of fat.

If anyone needs another reason to exercise, here it is: when our muscles contract during physical activity, they release substances that help offset inflammation. That’s a simplified way to help explain why people who are active are helping their bodies resist inflammation.

Together, the twin burdens of diabetes and obesity can lead to heart attack, kidney failure, nerve damage and blindness. So it’s clear that Grandma was on the right track. If she was keeping up with medical advances, she’d advise something very familiar: Eat a nutritious diet and exercise.

Was Grandma right about diAbeTes?

Add inflammation, and we have worldwide “Diabesity”

Kilos up in Australia, New Zealand

DecaDes of gaining

This article is intended for educational purposes only.

L ike many developed nations, Australia and New Zealand are racking up a dubious achievement: their people are steadily gaining weight. In the past few decades, both countries

have seen steady rises in the rates of overweight and obesity.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that as of 2007-08 (the most recent period tracked), the percentage of adults who were overweight or obese climbed 5 percentage points since the previous period in 2001. (These numbers are based on people’s self-reports of their height and weight.) New Zealand’s Ministry of Health reports similar rises over a period from 1977-2009.

As the ABS notes, overweight and obesity increases the risk of developing several health problems, including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes (see story on “Diabesity” at left), joint problems and sleep apnea.

What’s to blame for the steady weight climb? Generally, high-calorie diets and low levels of physical activity.

Here’s how the data breaks down:

Y our body’s resources are like your bank savings account – your balance depends on the nutritious foods you

eat, the cleansing fluids you drink, the unpol-luted air you breathe, and the factors that “tax” your body’s system. These resources, if taxed at a high rate, will become depleted rapidly. The result is low energy, depressed mood, irritability and slow healing.

One big reason we may not experience a burst of energy after a meal is that our body’s resources are not harnessed correctly. The tax culprit that hinders our body is too often a three letter word: fat.

Contrary to what most people think, fat, otherwise known as lipid, does not embody sloth or laziness. Instead, lipids perform many functions in your body, like producing and storing hormones, cushioning your vital organs from injury or trauma, and serving as a reserve source of energy in times of starvation.

How fat “taxes” your bodyThe problem is that lipid requires precious bodily resources. In other words, the more lipid your body stores, the higher the tax on your body’s resources. These resources include minerals like iron, important for oxygen delivery; calcium and magnesium for strong bones; and potassium, for muscle contraction and maintaining water balance

and a comfortable blood pressure. Vitamins also become trapped in lipid. Vitamins A and E, which help scavenge free radicals and reduce sun damage to the back of your eye and the lining of your blood vessels, are part of the tax that your body must pay to service lipid. Vitamin D levels shrink, something that has been associated with weaker bones, multiple sclerosis and various cancers. Finally, Vitamin K levels diminish, which can lead to bleeding problems.

Though lipid has a taste for vitamins and minerals, it will also gobble up and store whatever fat-dissolvable environmental toxins that enter into its realm. These toxins don’t lay dormant. Rather, they further deplete your precious resources while releasing proteins that circulate in your body and disturb the efficient functioning of your vital organs. Glands that make normal hormones like the thyroid, pancreas, testes and ovaries all can succumb to the havoc that these environ-mental toxins wreak. So, excess lipid can result in diabetes, an underactive thyroid, lower levels of testosterone and infertility, and heart, kidney, liver and brain disease.

Clearing your body of fat via a coordinated and medically-supervised approach will allow precious resources to be distributed to the areas of your body that need them most. This results in a more energetic you!

A ustralia and New Zealand have some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. This can be attributed to a combination of factors:

• The climate

• Proximity to the equator and thus higher ultraviolet (UV) levels

• The outdoor culture

Types of skin cancerThe two most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. They are known together as non-melanoma cancers. Melanoma, a type of skin cancer which begins deeper in the skin, is less common than non-melanoma cancers but much more dangerous.

• Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) – BCC is the most common type of skin cancer. It grows slowly over time and can appear as small, round or flattened spots, scaly patches or ulcers or sores that don’t heal.

• Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) – SCC is most commonly found on the ears, face and mouth, and seems to appear more frequently on older people. Squamous cell carci-nomas can also develop in scars and skin ulcers.

• Melanoma – This is the most serious, but rarest form of skin cancer. In Australia and New Zealand, it is the fourth most common form of cancer; New Zealand has the highest incidence rate in the world. It can grow and spread quickly, may appear as a new spot or form in a freckle or mole and can grow anywhere on the body, not just areas exposed to sunlight.

Risk factorsDue to high levels of UV radiation throughout the year, everyone is at risk for skin cancer. However, certain factors may put you at increased risk:

Light or fair skin, light coloured eyes, and light coloured hair

• Prolonged, unprotected exposure to sunlight

• A family history of skin cancer, especially melanoma

• Lots of moles or freckles

• History of sunburn, especially in childhood

DetectionBecome familiar with your skin! Watch for moles, freckles, bumps or birthmarks that change:

• Size

• Colour

• Shape

• Texture

Be sure to check the skin on your back, back of the neck and ears. Use a handheld mirror or ask someone to check for you.

Help protect against skin cancerThe best way to protect against skin cancer is to reduce your exposure to sunlight when UV levels are 3 and above, especially from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. If you do go out in the sun:

• Wear sun-protective clothing

• Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30

• Wear a wide-brimmed hat that protects your face, head, neck and ears

• Wear sunglasses that meet the Australia/New Zealand Standard for Sunglasses (check the label or ask if they meet the standard before purchasing)

• Stay in the shade whenever possible

Are you “CoRE” savvy?

I f terms like “core fitness” and “core strength” aren’t clear to you, here’s an easy explanation: Think of your “core,” your entire mid-section, as a

muscular bridge between your upper and lower extremities. As everyone knows, it’s im-portant for a bridge to be strong so it doesn’t collapse over time.

Core strength advantageYour core needs to be strong to hold your body together when you run, jump, lift, dance, shovel, move furniture, lift your children, etc. Core muscles hold your organs in place; they help you balance, improve posture and sup-port your back so you can avoid injury. Strong core muscles allow you to participate in more activities with less fatigue.

If your core is weak, your arms and legs will be weak, too. You will be more vulnerable to

injury because you won’t be able to stabilize your spine, hips and shoulders properly when gardening, playing tennis or playing with your children. In virtually every move we make, we use muscles to stabilize some parts of our body while other muscles are moving body parts. If your core is weak, injury can often result from seemingly easy activities because of an inability to both stabilize and move.

How do you strengthen your core?Doing abdominal crunches is NOt an effec-tive, integrated way to achieve core strength. Isolation (where you try to target, or isolate specific muscles) is OUt. Integration is IN. We have to use a more dynamic method of training involving the movement of our bodies in many directions against gravity to achieve true core strength.

Perform these movements thinking “core first, then move.” A good mind-to-body connection will speed up your training benefits.

Core first, then moveMaking core strength a priority will make a huge difference in your ability to participate fully in all the fun activities

you might enjoy, such as water and snow skiing, hiking, playing ball, playing tennis, golfing, gardening, work-ing around the house or yard and so much more. Waist-height ratio better way to assess health risks Oxford, United Kingdom

Waist-to-height ratio (WHR) is the best way to predict the risk of weight-related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, said researchers at the European Congress on Obesity.

Analysing data from 31 studies of more than 300,000 men and women, researchers found that WHR predicted certain weight-related health risks more accurately than body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference alone. The scientists suggest that WHR be used as a screening tool across all countries and ethnic groups.

“Keeping your waist circumference to less than half your height can help increase life expectancy for every person in the world,” said lead researcher Dr. Margaret Ashwell.

Scientists closer to treatment for dementia St. Lucia, Australia

Scientists at The University of Queensland’s Brain Institute believe they are closer to developing therapies for treating dementia.

They found that a molecule produced by nerve cells – fractalkine – can help produce new brain cells as well as reverse a process that inhibits memory during aging.

Reporting in The Journal of Neuroscience, researchers said that previous studies had shown that exercise in mice increased production of nerve cells in the brain. In this study, they clarified that fractalkine was behind the development of new cells. They found that older animals with mental decline had significantly lower levels of fractalkine. They suggest that fractalkine could form the basis for future therapies.

Common chemicals raise health concerns Copenhagen, Denmark

Common chemicals such as phthalates, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs such as bisphenol A) and parabens should be used with greater caution, according to a study by the European Environment Agency, Europe’s environmental watchdog. These are endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which interfere with the body’s hormone systems.

The group warns that these common chemicals found in household products, cosmetics and medicines may be causing many modern health problems, including cancer, diabetes and infertility. EDCs have already been linked to higher incidence of breast cancer, earlier onset of puberty and male infertility.

Researchers point out that it isn’t a single chemical or product that is the problem, but rather the fact that humans are constantly exposed to so many of them.

L ife gets busier and busier, it seems. Especially for women: they take on the role of caregiver, mother, daughter, wife and employee – oftentimes

simultaneously! But try as they might, women can’t be everything to everyone all at once; burnout is inevitable.

The stress of trying can take its toll on your health. The stress-induced hormone, cortisol, can cause weight gain around the middle, which in turn has been implicated in heart problems. What’s more, a buildup of cortisol can affect the area of the brain involved in memory, leading to memory problems.

Finding time for yourself can help you recharge – physically, emotionally and spiritually. You may experience a little bit of guilt for taking some time for yourself – or even get some pushback from those nearest and dearest to you. Explain to them (and yourself!) that it will be best for everyone involved: you’ll be better equipped to deal with your responsibilities and will bring more to your relationships by being more focused, more energised, more patient and more centered.

Finding “you” timeTry these tips for getting in your recharge time. Start gradually if necessary: a few minutes a day can help you feel more balanced (and may leave you craving more).

• Turn off your phone for a designated amount of time each day. Spend the time reading, writing in a journal or pursuing a hobby. You can always return calls and emails later.

• Schedule your “you” time like any other appointment. Book it in your calendar – and stick to it. Let others know that you will be busy during that time slot. Relax at home, enjoy a drink at a coffee shop, visit a friend or even treat yourself to a massage or pedicure.

• Get up earlier. Some women find that getting up earlier than the rest of the house affords them extra time to enjoy some peace and quiet, exercise, pray, savour a cup of coffee or anything else that calms their spirit and helps them prepare for the day.

• Evaluate your activities. Are you wasting precious time on things you could easily cut out of your life? Determine what can stay and what should go, and free up some “you” time in the process.

The Beauty of HEALTH with Cheryl Tiegs

Cheryl Tiegs

Cheryl Tiegs is an internationally- recognised supermodel, designer, author, businesswoman, public speaker and avid spokeswoman for health and fitness. Featured in the Nopalea™ TV program, Cheryl personifies healthy living and the beauty of health.

Do you have a question for Cheryl about healthy living? Write to: [email protected], and your question may be featured in a future column.

F or much of her life, Cheryl Tiegs has been on a path of learning. After modeling in high school and then in college, she remem-bers her agent at the time saying,

“Now that you’ve finished formal education, the key to beauty is to continue to learn.” That learning, in the form of experiences and adventures, is what being attractive is about, she believes.

Inner beauty and outer beauty, Cheryl notes, are one and the same: “If you exude health, you’re feeling good inside and you shine. I’m very aware of my body, my health, my fitness, and I also follow a spiritual path. That’s very important to me,” she says. “That’s the mind as well as the body – an awareness of all the aspects of who we are.”

The myth of “the 5 o’clock fix”That awareness was in the spotlight after a celebrity event, when an interviewer asked her how long it took her to get ready for the red carpet. “One year,” she replied. That was shorthand for the lifelong commitment she has made to healthy living.

“If you haven’t taken care of yourself, you can’t sit down at 5 o’clock and have hair and make-up people ‘fix you’; you’re just not going to look good. But when you are fit and healthy and feeling good, getting ready for any event doesn’t take long.”

It’s no surprise to learn that Cheryl follows the best health practices: being mindful of what she eats, exercising, getting enough sleep and managing stress.

She wasn’t always so health-aware, though. In her early 20s she gained weight, and her bookings almost stopped. She did not have an educated perspective on her own health and nutrition. She recalls a photo shoot where she was actually asked to leave because she was too big. This was a devastating experience. “I went home and ate everything I could. I didn’t know what to do.”

Today, of course, Cheryl knows exactly what to do (and what not to do) for beauti-ful health. “You cannot sit in the easy chair with your hand in a bag of potato chips,” she observes, “and stand up and feel good about yourself.”

The VitaJournal is excited to feature a special columnist: Legendary supermodel/entrepreneur Cheryl Tiegs. Here, Cheryl shares the tips that keep her feeling – and looking – beautifully healthy.

W hen someone around you is going through hard times, such as a job layoff, unfavourable health

diagnosis, divorce or death of a loved one, you may wonder: is there something I can do for them? Yes. And that starts by not ignoring what happened to them.

So often we avoid the person going through difficult times just because we are afraid to say something wrong. But that doesn’t help at all, and it leaves us carrying around enor-mous guilt.

Let them know you’re there

It won’t be easy to find the right words to say. But it’s ok to admit that and let them know you’re there if they need someone to listen. It’s better to say that than nothing at all.

During the recent recession, many people got laid off from their jobs and in the process may have lost their houses to foreclosure because they no longer could make the payments. Acknowledge the loss and how awful it must be for them.

If a friend’s spouse passed away you can say this: “I know what a profound loss this is for you, and I want you to know I’m here if you need me.” Or if you have a happy memory,

share it briefly but don’t ramble on. Your words will be a gift to your friend.

In the culture of our times, many of our friends will go through divorce. Even though your curiosity is begging to know the details, don’t ask. Just say, “I’m your friend, and I’m always here for you.” If your friend is the one being divorced, don’t be tempted to say, “I never liked him anyway” because they might get back together.

When a friend gets an unfavourable medical diagnosis you can say, “I am so sorry you have to go through this.” Don’t be tempted to give advice.

For almost seven years now, I have gone through many hard challenges including a marriage breakup and health crisis. In that time I found out how important it is to have friends who really care. I have some amazing friends who have stuck by me, who encourage me and motivate me to keep on going.

So, if you have a friend going through hard times…hang in there! It’s tough, but the joy of being able to be there for someone you care about is huge. The most important thing you can do is stay connected.

Then God’s sure to give you something to be patient about!” With that firm instruction ringing in my ears, I deter-mined that I had better start developing the art of patience in my life before I really had something to wait on.

Today, I can say that I’ve had my fair share of things to be patient about and I never pray for patience. Instead I ask God to give me the wisdom and discernment to know how to navigate certain situations. I have learned that if I instinctively put one foot in front of the other and trust that God is there to catch me, I will always land on my feet. Eventually, I learned to live one day at a time, focusing only on the daily doing and living only in the moment. Once I began adhering to this principle, I found that waiting became much easier.

Learning to wait

It is not an easy discipline, waiting, but it is one that can be developed if surrendered to completely. Here are a few steps to help in the process:

Wait in faith. This takes trusting God to work in our lives no matter how long we must wait. His time is always the right time, not too early, never too late, but always just right.

Wait in quiet reflection. Take the time to take time, to get quiet, something that is rare in our busy schedules. Still your restless mind; silence all outside distractions; calm your outspoken inner voice.

Wait in expectation. God will answer you; there is always an answer, so come with an expectant heart, prepared to receive. You will not be met with disappointment.

I believe that God would have us wake daily with a fresh expectation of what He is doing in our lives and invite Him to join us in the adventure.

Won’t you take this day and live in the moment, prayerfully making time to breathe deeply, reflecting on all that He is doing in your life? Remember, a life lived in the moment is a life lived fully and with purpose.

A lot of people complain about fatigue after sitting eight hours at a desk. Now put yourself in Jess C.’s boots. This Cave Creek, AZ, USA equestrian trainer and roper spends anywhere from 12 to 14 hours per day working with

horses in hot, dusty conditions. “My job is very physically demanding,” Jess says. “I spend every day, six days a week, riding, training and roping horses. I also have to lift heavy bales of hay, place and remove saddles, and make sure the horses are groomed, fed and watered. I just can’t afford to be in pain for any length of time.”

Riding horses isn’t merely a job for Jess, it’s her lifelong passion. “Horses have always been an important part of my life, and I have ridden, shown and won at national levels since I was a youth,” she states. “I currently compete in many roping events and it is all very physical. The demands of constantly swinging my rope and the hours required to stay in game form caused overall stiffness and lots of pain. My arm was especially hurting.”

Jess worried that she wouldn’t be able to successfully compete in several upcoming team roping events. This involves amazing coordination and cooperation, and she didn’t want to let down her roping partner. Jess tried several “band-aid” solutions, including over-the-counter pain relievers, which ended up causing digestive problems.

A game-changerSomething had to be done, so Jess tried Nopalea. “This wellness drink has made a huge difference,” says Jess. “After a few weeks on the Loading Phase, my mobility improved and the pain and inflammation dramatically decreased. Since I started drinking Nopalea, the inflammation in my tendon doesn’t bother me nearly as much. I have been taking Nopalea steadily for two months and no longer have the

overall body soreness that I used to have. I feel that this wellness drink is not only reducing my inflammation which causes stiffness and pain, but also helps me to stay strong and keep on top of my game physically.”

The summer roper season is heating up, and Jess is ready to start roping again. “Now I have the confidence to compete against the very best,” Jess proudly says. “I’m really a believer in this fantastic product.

“I don’t hesitate to recommend Nopalea to other horse trainers who are also suffering from pain and inflammation.”

If symptoms persist consult your healthcare provider.

Memory lapses have you worried? We all forget things occasionally but

persistent, increasing memory loss can indicate something more insidious, such as Alzheimer’s disease. The most common cause of dementia, Alzheimer’s is a fatal disease that afflicts millions.

Watch for these signs of Alzheimer’s from the Alzheimer’s Association, USA. If you recognise any of them in yourself or a loved one, immediately contact your healthcare provider. Early detection and treatment may help temporarily slow the progression of the disease.

Disruptive memory loss – People with Alzheimer’s may forget appointments and events, repeat them-selves over and over and eventually forget the names of family members and everyday objects.

Difficulty planning or concentrating – Alzheimer’s disease may make it difficult for some people to concentrate, especially on tasks involving numbers. It becomes challenging to manage finances, pay bills, etc. It may take

longer to complete tasks that were once done by rote.

Challenges in completing familiar tasks – Everyday tasks become difficult, such as planning and cooking a meal, playing a board game or even driving to a familiar destination.

Losing track of time and place – Losing a sense of time and place is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. These problems may lead to getting lost in familiar places.

vision and perception problems – Difficulty determining spatial relation-ships, discerning colours and vision problems in general can be symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Trouble with words and conversations – Finding the right words, expressing thoughts and maintaining a conver-sation may become increasingly challenging. The ability to read and write may also diminish.

Routinely misplacing things – Those with Alzheimer’s may have a tendency to misplace objects in

unexpected places – and be unable to retrace their steps to find them.

Lack of judgment – Decision-making and judgment may become impaired. For example, not knowing how to respond to food burning on the stove or not paying attention to their own grooming.

Withdrawal from friends and family – People with Alzheimer’s may begin to withdraw from activities that they once took interest in, such as a hobby or social events.

Personality and mood changes – Changes in the brain can affect how those with Alzheimer’s act and feel. They may experience depression, anxiety, mood swings, suspicion, increased stubbornness, irritability and aggressiveness and changes in sleep patterns.

Remember, if you see any of these signs, consult your healthcare provider. Early detection and treatment may provide temporary relief of symptoms and help you maintain your independence longer.
