Visualizing Fractions
Topic 2
Grade 1 Grade 2
visualizes and identifies ½ and ¼ of a whole object.
visualizes and identifies unit fractions with denominators 10 and below
divides a whole into halves and fourths
reads and writes unit fractions
divides the elements of a set of objects into two groups of equal quantities to show halves of sets
compares unit fractions using relation symbols
divides the elements of a set of objects into four groups of equal quantities to show fourths of sets.
orders unit fractions
given half of a region or a set, draws the whole region or set.
visualizes and identifies other fractions less than one with denominators 10 and below
Grade 2
visualizes and identifies similar fractions (using group of objects and number line)
reads and writes similar fractions
compares similar fractions using relation symbols.
orders similar fractions
Some Common ErrorsStudents think that the numerator and denominator
are separate values. It is hard for them to see that 1/4 is one number. (Use the number line to develop this notion)
In thinking of the numbers separately, students may think that 2/3 means any two parts, not equal-sized parts.
Students think that a fraction such as 1/3 is smaller than a fraction such as 1/4 because 3 is smaller than 4.
Do you think learning fractions is difficult?
Why or why not?
QUESTION
Concept of Fraction Teachers must know
1) Fraction as part of a whole2) Fraction as part of a set of objects
3) Fraction as division4) Fraction as a ratio5) Fraction as a number on the number line
