    HOLD PREPARATION FOR ALUMINA CARGO

WHAT IS ALUMINA Contrary to popular belief, alumina is not dirty brown stuff. That is bauxite. Alumina is produced after an expensive refining process and is white in colour. Any impurity in alumina can easily be seen with the naked eye. This impurity can further hamper the process of converting alumina into aluminium.

Alumina is converted into aluminium in smelters. Aluminium is used to make your everyday pots and pans and also aircraft. Hence the need for cargo holds carrying alumina, to be very clean and free of contaminants.

CARGO HOLD CLEANLINESS REQUIREMENTS FOR ALUMINA Cargo holds shall be fresh water clean and be free of contaminants such as rust, flaking paint, timber dunnage, plastic and burlap etc.

INSPECTION OF CARGO HOLDS CARRYING ALUMINA

Prior to loading cargo holds nominated to carry alumina are inspected by shippers' surveyors. This inspection is rather strict, due to the reasons explained above.

Following is a visual guideline, compiled by experienced surveyors at C.R.COX & ASSOCIATES, as to what is accepted and what is not. It covers many issues that might exist in cargo holds, but is by no means a complete list.
