Requirement: All personnel performing visual examinations to comply with ASME B31.1 Code shall be qualified as follows: 1. Instruction in the fundamentals of the non-destructive examination method-visual examination. 2. A minimum of eight hours on the job training in order to familiarize the visual examiner with the appearance and interpretation of indications of weld defect. 3. Prior to being designated a visual examiner, the individual will receive an eye exam by a qualified individual, to at least Jaeger J-2 or equivalent. 4. Prior to being qualified as a Visual Examiner, the individual must receive a passing grade (minimum 70%) on an oral or written examination consisting of 10 questions of visual examination methods, appearance of welds and interpretation of indications of weld defect. 5. Upon completion of all of the above, the individual will be certified in writing that he is a qualified visual examiner. Qualification: The potential visual examiner must receive four hours of instruction in the fundamentals of visual examination. This shall include as a minimum the following: 1. Detection of surface cracks 2. Definition of undercut 3. Sizing of weld reinforcement 4. Definition of lack of fusion 5. Defining lack of penetration 6. Fitup Alignment 7. Sizing of fillet welds 8. Size of nozzle welds 9. Welding of slip-on flanges 10. Acceptable types of nozzle welds

PROCEDURE FOR THE QUALIFICATION OF VISUAL EXAMINERS

QUALIFICATION OF VISUAL EXAMINER (B31.1)

Requalification will be required when there is specific reason to question the ability of the individual to perform visual examination, when an individual has not received an eye examination within the last (12) months or when there are substantial changes in the visual examination requirements in the referenced code, procedures or equipment. Test Questions:

1. Is undercutting greater than 1/32” acceptable?

2. Are cracks 1/8” in length acceptable?

3. When performing direct visual examination, does the code allow you to look at the weld at an angle less then 30 degrees?

4. How do you determine if sufficient lighting is provided for visual examination?

5. What is the maximum reinforcement allowed for 6” schedule 80 girth weld with

temperature greater than 750 degrees.

6. Is lack of fusion acceptable.

7. The size of a fillet weld is: a. the theoretical throat_____ b. the height of the weld leg______ c. None of the above_______

8. On the girth weld, when is concavity acceptable?

9. On socket welds, what is the minimum distance between the end of the pipe and the

shoulder of the socket?

10. Are welds with course ripples, grooves overlaps, abrupt ridges and valleys acceptable?
