TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS
This is a practical class consisting of lectures, readings, and hands-on media projects. You will learn the material by producing media projects, critically analyzing the work of your peers, and studying the relevant topics in the assigned texts.
Open Labs
Many of our class projects will require extensive computer time in and outside of class in order to complete polished, high-quality work. You may work with software on your own at any time. If you work away from class a lot, you should be aware that some software does not match the University lab’s. You are responsible for saving your file and resolving any technical issues that arise from work done outside of the lab.
Digital storage/Backing Up
Save your work OFTEN; each student must provide at least 8GB external storage in one place/drive, but a 16GB USB flash drive is recommended. Use your own storage device, such as a flash drive or external hard drive. Do not save files to the computer desktop. You are responsible for saving and storing your own work.
Software Download
The entire Adobe suite is free to active registered students via software.utah.edu
Lab time
You will need time outside of the scheduled class period to complete your assignments. Please plan your semester schedule accordingly.

CLASS POLICIES
Attendance And Late Work
Attendance is expected; you will lose credit for absence or tardiness. Lesson and Warm Up Exercises must be completed in class on the day they are assigned to receive credit. They cannot be made up unless you provide proof of a university-approved activity or an emergency.
If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to make up any work for that day and to get the class notes from a colleague. However, if you have a time conflict with a class period, let the instructor know as soon as possible ahead of time so that you may schedule an appointment to discuss what you missed. The instructor will not reiterate class material during class time for students who do not attend. Projects and assignments must be turned in and presented on the assigned days on our class schedule. Late projects will lose 25% points for each day late and presentations cannot be made up. Only legitimate University approved absences will be recognized. More than three illegitimate absences may result in failure.
Honesty And Dishonesty
Plagiarism, academic dishonesty, or cheating of any sort will result in at least an E for the assignment, and possibly for the course, and may also include additional disciplinary action. Please see the Student Handbook for additional plagiarism policies.
Original Source Materials
In this class, we will gather and edit photographs. All materials included in your projects must be original materials gathered by you or provided by the instructor for this class. You may not use materials found online, gathered from other classmates, or gathered by you for previous classes or from previous activities outside of our class. Be creative, be original!
Grade Disputes
According to university policy, a student who wishes to dispute a grade must try to resolve the matter first with the instructor. The instructor has 10 business days to respond
to the student. If the student and instructor cannot resolve the matter, the student may dispute the grade with the department chair. The student must prove the grade is “arbitrary and capricious.” See Section IV (Student Academic Performance) of the Student Code: http://www.regulations.utah.edu/academics/6-400.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..
If you would like to discuss a grade with me, please wait 24 hours after receiving the assignment, then schedule an appointment with me with a written response about why your work deserves a better grade.
GRADES
Your final grade will be calculated from credit earned on participation, preparation, reflection papers, activities, and projects.

Participation & Professionalism
This is a professional skills class. We'll be learning specific software and hardware, but also practicing how to behave in a professional situation.
Professional Attitude
Students are expected to come to class on time. In the professional world, you are expected to complete and turn in your work on the due dates and treat your peers fairly and respectfully. With this being a longer class I will try and work in 5 min breaks every 55 min or so. Please hold any non-class related activity (calls, text, snapchats, etc.) to that time.
The class meets once a week for 14 weeks during the semester. Therefore, your attendance is integral to your success in the course. If you are aware of a scheduling conflict causing you to be absent for reasons other than University approved activities, please let the instructor know as soon as possible. Participation and attendance includes coming to Lab days where time is set aside for your midterm and final projects. The scheduled lab times allow you to get immediate feedback and assistance from the instructor.
