Description: An 8.5 x 11 offset color brochure designed using my own images.

Programs: Adobe Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator

Date: 7/13/14

Course/Instructor: Comm 130 section 10Emily Kunz

Objectives:• Set up and align a two-sided, folded

document.• Create an original company logo and

use it in a brochure.• Incorporate at least 4 quality images.

One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.

• Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.

• Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process: After deciding what type of brochure I wanted to make, I started by choosing the pictures I would use and designing my color scheme based on those pictures. The color scheme ended up consisting of mostly warm fall colors. After I had chosen the color scheme, I went to work designing the logo. I decided to go with something simple. In

Illustrator, I used the pen tool to outline our heads andaddedastrokeandremovedthefill.IusedRockwell for the font, and changed the kerning of the word “Life” so it would align with the edges of the word “Cleaver.”

Afterfinishingthelogo,ImovedintoPhotoshopand did some basic adjustments on the photos I chose. I adjusted the levels, vibrance, sharpness, and selective colors where needed. I did a clean selection of two of them to use for text wrapping in the brochure. I did this using the quick selection toolandthe“refineedge”option.

Next I moved into In design and began designing. I started with the placement of elements on the front and back of the brochure, and then moved to the inside. I used the color strips and boxes to create unity and rhythm through repetition.

Description:A full-bleed 8.5 x 11 photodesign project in order to demonstrate my photography and image editing skills to potential employers. It includes my own image, a consistent color scheme based on my image, text, and design elements.

Programs:Photoshop

Date:5/23/14

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 section 10Emily Kunz

Objectives:• Learn basic photography skills.• Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into

the layout.• Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.• Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-

destructive editing.)• Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5×11 page layout.• Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.• Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8” (0.125) from all four sides.

Process:First, I chose my color scheme and decided what my message/audience was going to be. Once I decided on those things, I gathered everything I’d need for my photo, set it up, and took some shots with the camera on my Samsung Galaxy S3 (8mp). Next I uploaded the images to my PC and chose the one that I thought was the best. I then took that image into Photoshop and made adjustments to the Vibrance/Saturation, Levels, Color Selection, and Sharpness. I also adjusted thecropping.OnceIfinishedmyphoto-editing,Imovedtheimagetoanew8.5×11Photoshopdocument and got to work designing my poster. I used blocks of color behind the text for repetition and to integrate my color scheme as well as make my key words stand out. I also used typography to emphasize key words in the quote.

previous designs. Don’t use photos or live trace.• Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are

okay on business card and letterhead as additional design elements. • Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.• Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.• Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use periods,

bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

My biggest challenge was achieving good alignment. I had to strategically place and size many elements to get them to align well.

Description:A webpage to showcase a logo I designed for April Cleaver Art & Design.

Programs:Adobe DreamWeaver and Text Wrangler

Date:6/29/14

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 section 10Emily Kunz

Objectives:• Size and optimize an original logo as a

.png for a web page so the long side is 300 – 500 pixels.

• Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)

• Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content.

• Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS.

• Identify hex colors for web design. (Find and use hex colors in Photoshop to match your logo)

• Compressmultiplefilesinazippedfoldertoattachasonefile.

• Open your HTML page in a web browser, and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.

Process:I used DreamWeaver and Text Wrangler to

edit my HTML and CSS code. First I wrote up my HTMLfile, addedmylogoandanynecessarylinks, and validated it (I used Photoshop and Illustrator to resize my logo for the web and get the correct RGB colors). After that, I linked a CSS template to my HTML page and changed several elements so thatmywebpagewouldreflectasimilardesigntomy logo.

I used the eye dropper tool to match the exact colors of my logo and then I incorporated them into the design of my webpage. I also used the fonts from my logo (Century Gothic and Bell MT) for mywebpage.Ifloatedmyimagetotheleftsothatthere would be some text to the right of it to make the webpage more balanced. I also increased the size of the padding and the margins on some of the elements so that things wouldn’t be so crowded. For my headers, I opted to use a white font and a colored background. I really like the effect that this has against my logo.

appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.• Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. • Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.

Process:First I sat down with my sketchbook and thought about what company or person I wanted to design for, and then got to work drawing up some sketches. Once I had a basic idea of what I was doing, I went to the computer and gathered some images from my sister-in-law’s Instagram accounttouseasreferences.Iendedupusingapictureofadumbbellforthefirstlogo.ImovedthephotointoIllustratorandtraceditwiththepentoolandgaveitapinkfill.Forthesecondlogo,Iused the shape tool and drew in a square, then copied and pasted it until I had three. Objectives:• UsetheFOCUSdesignprocesswithstrongfocalpointandflow• Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message• Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks• Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements• Useamasktoapplyafiltertoonepartoftheimage• Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…your choice)• Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)• Select good quality images

Process:First I decided what I wanted my message to be. I wanted to use my favorite scripture for this poster, so once I realized that I searched the internet for images that could accurately depict that message.

Once I had my images, I cropped the background, and then editing the levels, vibrance, sharpness, and selective colors. Then I used a mask to blend the seagull picture in with the ocean picture, and loweredtheopacityabit.Ialsoaddedanoisereductionfiltertogiveitsofteredges.

After that, I copied and pasted the scripture from LDS.org and edited the typography. Then I used the eyedropper tool to pick up colors from the images to create matching background boxes for the scripture, and then I lowered the opacity to give them a more layered effect.
