We don’t mean the whites that have to be put away after La-bour Day. get ready for the pearly pile-on to make a state-ment this spring.

Long, layered looks of multi-ple pearl strands are being spot-ted anywhere from the runway to the corner Starbucks, making this ladylike inspired look not just for the ladies who lunch anymore.

Even jewellery novices will en-joy the versatility of playing with longer strands by knotting and doubling a single necklace into multiple looks. Enthusiasts will agree that sometimes ‘more is more’ when creating their art-fully disheveled statement piece by adding more than one strand or strands in different colours, such as pink or yellow.

For a little extra downtown edge, opt for looped chain neck-lace with alternating pearl and crystal stanchions, for an inter-

esting mix of textures that pair just as perfectly with skinny jeans and a tee as they do with dressier styles.

Whatever your twist is on the iconic classic, the key is to channel your inner Coco and make it your own… because, as in the words of the iconic pearl purveyor herself: ”luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.”

The Long and the Short of it:• Choker 14-16 inches: Classic and versatile, this length sits on the collar to showcase the beau-tiful angle of the neck.

• Princess 17-19 inches: A per-fect length for your first set of pearls, not too short and not too long.

• Matinee 20-25 inches. An ex-cellent choice for business and daytime, that is suited to higher necklines.

• Opera 26-36 inches. The

length made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker in the Sex and the City movie. Perfect for doubling or tying a knot.

• Rope 37”+ inches. The most luxurious of lengths because of the weight and quantity of pearls required to make such a long strand.

Exfoliation is the removal of the old-est dead skin cells that cling to the skin’s outermost surface. Exfoliation is an im-portant part of both facials and body treatments. When done correctly, exfolia-tion leaves the skin feeling smoother and fresher looking. Exfoliation also makes penetration easier for expensive facial products like serums.

According to spas.about.com, there are two forms of exfoliation: mechanical and

chemical. Your fa-vourite spa / skin care practitioner

can explain which meth-od is right for you.

NoW, WHy IS ExFoLIaTIoN IMpoRTaNT?The skin is constantly generating new skin cells at the lower layer (the dermis) and sending them to the surface (the epi-dermis). As the cells rise to the surface they gradually die and become filled with keratin. These keratinized skin cells are essential because they give our skin its protective quality. But they are constant-ly sloughing off to make way for young-er cells.

As we age the process of cell turnover slows down. Cells start to pile up un-evenly on the skin’s surface, giving it a dry, rough, dull appearance. Exfolia-tion is beneficial because it removes those cells that are clinging on, revealing the fresher, younger skin cells below.

chinatown has been the centre for Chi-nese culture in Vancouver for the last cen-tury. The Silk Road Walking Route was launched in 2001 and has become a per-manent link between Chinatown and Downtown. The Silk Road has served to unify many independent initiatives, such as the Millennium Chinatown gate, the Commemorative Bell from guangzhou, China and the redevelopment of Shang-hai Alley.

The walking route is approximately three km from Library Square, around China-town and back to Library Square. The route proceeds north and east from Li-brary Square to the Keefer Steps where it descends towards the colourful and vi-brant retail streets of Chinatown. Follow the Silk Road banners to Pender St, gore Ave and Keefer St, stopping to admire the historic buildings, the Chinese Cultur-al Centre, and the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Clas-sical Chinese garden. Take a quick side trip down Shanghai and Suzhou Alleys, browse in the many shops and enjoy the bakeries, markets and restaurants.

gastown is where the City of Vancouver had its begin-ning in 1867. Named after the first settler and colourful saloon owner “gassy Jack” Deighton, gastown is now a vibrant histor-ic area of Vic-torian architec-ture, ‘cobbled’

streets, alleys and courtyards. Its historical significance as well as its shopping, galler-ies, cafes and restaurants make it a popu-lar destination for tourists.

gastown is the site of the world’s first steam-powered clock and is also a com-munity where people live and work. Fol-low Hamilton and Cambie Streets north from Library Square approximately half a kilometre to Water St. The gastown sec-tion of the Downtown Historic greenway is currently under development.

Yaletown got its name in the late 1800s when the Canadian Pacific Railroad moved its rail yards and repair facili-ties from Yale in the Fraser Canyon, to the new ‘Yaletown’ on the north shore of False Creek. The Roundhouse, a his-toric railway building used by the CPR for maintenance of their locomotives, has found a new life as the Roundhouse Com-munity Centre at the south end of the Yaletown walking route. Surrounded by new high-rise residential development on the old Expo 86 site, Yaletown was once Vancouver’s warehouse district.

The old warehouse loading docks have been transformed into outdoor cafes and promenades, and the historic warehouses are now home to lofts, high tech compa-nies, professional and design offices, gal-leries and high-end shops. Follow Ham-ilton and Mainland Streets south from Library Square to the False Creek Seawall at the south foot of Davie St. This section of the Downtown Historic trail is also cur-rently under development.

Way back when, when I began drinking wine, the choices were fairly limited, and $7 a bottle was my ceiling! You had your French, Italian and Australian imports; or your Okanagan-produced early additions to the marketplace that were… shall we say, off the scale in terms of acidity, sweetness, cloudiness, tannins, nose, et al… and not in a good way!

We weren’t so discerning about wine back then, but today’s offerings are myriad and, dare I say, elite, in terms of taste and quality. In downtown Vancouver, specialty and VQA wine stores offer up some delicious and affordable options at your fingertips.

At Marquis Wine Cellars on Davie St. (www.marquis-wines.com) you’ll

find their picks under $20. From Malbec to Chianti to Riesling, there’s something for every palate. Join them for complimentary tastings, too.

At Sutton Place Wine Merchant on Burrard, membership at the Wine Club certainly has its privileges. Like up to 50 per cent off dining at the hotel; access to purchase history on-line; first access to special release products; monthly newsletter; and invites to Wine Club member-only events. Check it out at www.suttonplacewinemerchant.com.

Stroll along Mainland Street in Yaletown and Taylorwood Wines welcomes you with its great selection of B.C. wines at winery and liquor store prices, which is refreshing. As are the wines, and at this VQA purveyor, you’ll get expert wine and food pairing advice. Join them for comp wine tastings Thursdays and Sundays; go to www.taylorwoodwines.com for all your sipping pleasures.

Before or after dining in gastown, when you’ve got a hankering for that perfect bottle, simply pop in to The Wine Thief, an offshoot of Steamworks Brewing Co. at 375 Water St. Details at www.steamworks.com/winethief.htm.

DoWNToWN CoRENew York we are not, but Vancouver is becoming more famous for its variety of hotdogs everyday. From the well-known Japa Dog cart at Burrard and Pender streets, and Burrard and Smithe streets, to the new Dougie Dog spot at 1011 granville St., with more than 20 international varieties, Vancouverites know their downtown dogs.

But for a sit-down experience, The Templeton diner at 1087 granville St. cannot be beat, at least when it comes to creamsicle or rootbeer milkshakes. The diner’s brunch menu is also a city favourite.

GaSToWNFor the more international palate, Nuba Restaurant at 207-B West Hastings St. serves Lebanese cuisine along with the ambiance of 1940’s Beirut. There is also La Casita at 101 West Cordova St., a festive and comfortable Mexican restaurant with large and small portion options, and darn good tacos.

For lunch, Smart Mouth Café at 117-131 Water St. is a great place to grab a quick bite, an exceptional cup of coffee, and people-watch in one of Vancouver’s busiest neighbourhoods.

yaLEToWNThis neighbourhood is not typically known for its affordability, but it is chock full of cafés, of varying tastes and prices.

Agro Café at 1207 Hamilton St. offers up sandwiches and tasty bites along with sublime coffee (the staff take a cup of joe very seriously) while Sciue, the Italian Bakery Caffé at 800 West Pender St., serves paninis and pane Romano as well as scrumptious weekend brunch items, such as Sciue Benedict al Salmone.

CoaL HaRBouRA former business district with steel and glass condos popping up over the past decade or so, Coal Harbour is not the area many people think of when they think ‘affordable dining’. But like many parts of downtown, there is a plethora of cafés throughout the neighbourhood.

Café Taza, at 355 Burrard St., serves freshly made sandwiches —the roast beef is delicious—and warm lunches. get there early though; the café closes at 3 p.m. Just up from Coal Harbour is Vancouver’s best-known greek restaurant, Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna at 1124 Davie St. The portions are huge and the souvlaki is delicious.

Downtown

Special Guests for Springannabel and David Hawksworth

Q Describe your respective careers and what’s coming up for the future…

Annabel I’m principal of Hawksworth Communications, a boutique public relations agency representing luxury lifestyle and hospitality brands such as the Opus Hotel, Tiffany & Co., Adara Hotel, and the West Coast Fishing Club.

David I’ll be chef and proprietor of the upcoming Hawksworth restaurant at the Rosewood Hotel georgia (opening late 2010). I also do catering contracts.

Q You live downtown. Which area and why did you choose it, what do you like about it?

D We live right in the heart of Yaletown – we both love the heritage look of the area and that it has a real neighbourhood feel. And the availability of loft-style living is what first drew me to the area and the potential I could see for its future.

A I loves that our apartment has English brick (like a little piece of home). Plus, we have a young son, and it’s great - there are a lot of young families in Yaletown, and we have many friends in the area.

Q The Olympics and the LiveCity events took place right in your backyard. Did you survive it, and what do you think the games will provide as a legacy to Vancouver, spec. downtown?

D: It was great to be at the heart of the action during the Olympics; they closed the street we live on and my son loved watching street hockey and the super-skippers from the window. The buzz was incredible.

A We could walk everywhere and we really took advantage of having LiveCity and the pavilions right on our doorstep. Certainly the Canada Line is one of the greatest legacies connecting the neighbourhoods of Vancouver and making them more accessible to all.

Q In summary, tell us what makes downtown Vancouver great, and any other comments:

A It’s the ultimate lifestyle in terms of convenience – I can get from my home to the office in minutes, I have fabulous restaurants and boutiques on my doorstep and with the Canada Line now complete can be at the Airport in 22 minutes (and Holt Renfrew in three!).

D We can take the aqua bus to granville Island Market and the entire length of the seawall is literally on our doorstep, not to mention the local mountains are just half an hour away and Whistler only one and a half. In a nutshell, it’s the best of both worlds – urban living surrounded by nature’s playground.

For your décor, there’s no better way to do it than with colour. Whether you spike a bland room with the pop of bright pillows and a new rug, or you repaint every room in your house, Pantone — the global authority on colour — offers plenty of options for ushering in a sunny new era.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says colour trends are not simply decided upon, but that forecasters observe the natural world as well as socioeconomic issues, technology, lifestyles and play styles, diversions, entertainment, and most importantly, the needs, moods, fantasies and aspirations of consumers.

In 2010, the company offers eight palettes (complementing colours) for spring that bring splashes of sunshine and tropical gardens, spring flowers and grassy fields to the moody shades of grey and purple that dominated recent seasons.

But you needn’t toss out yesterday’s colours completely. This year’s range of palettes work with last year’s, so rather than re-invent your home’s look completely, you can complement and update with new shades.

Among the palettes is “greenmarket,” a range of colours inspired by the trend toward healthier and more artisanal foods and the increased popularity of

farmers’ markets. Colours like Tomato Puree and Beaujolais are lifted by Super Lemon, Apple green, or the more exotic colours of Dijon, Paprika and Chutney. The palette “contains representational hues that entice and appeal to both the eyes and the taste buds,” says Pantone.

“gatherings” is a palette of warm, earthy browns and golds inspired by the continent of Africa.

“Artifacts and handicrafts reflect a creative boldness that is expressed in a panoply of appropriately named colours: Cypress green, Smoke Blue, Sand and Oasis mixed with the magic of Twilight Mauve, the piquancy of Lemon Curry and the heated glimmer of Copper Coin.”

Those who prefer some moodiness in their colour scheme will love “galaxy,” a palette that illustrates the harmony of hue found in the nocturnal sky.

“Mirroring the colours of the earth, the greens, called greener Pastures and Peridot, are powerfully contrasted against the deepest extraterrestrial blues, silver and stormy violets. Brilliant sprays of turquoise and a radiating orchid tone enhance the atmosphere, while Rich gold embodies the energy and splendor of the epicenter of it all – the sun.”

Other palettes for spring 2010 are called Resourceful, Transformations, Ambiance, High Definition and Pastiche. An additional palette of Tinged Neutrals is also included.

greY is gaYgrey is this season’s hot neutral. No really! Yes, I know we live in grey for most of the year so why would we want to see more of it adorning our walls and furnishings? Well darling, grey can be gay, as in happy. There are many shades of grey; from a soft grey to a cool silver grey to a gunmetal grey. It’s not as harsh as black or boring as beige. Add shots of white, navy, lavender, yellow or fuschia and you have a winning combination.

MaD For MeTaLLicsMetallics are hot this year and they’re popping up everywhere. From fashion to furnishings to furniture, designers continue to delight with the razzle-dazzle of metallics and metal. Maybe it’s because we’re still basking in the glow of the Olympic games, but we continue to be enamoured by gold, silver, and bronze and other precious metals. great in both modern and traditional settings, furniture takes on a new finish with metallics.

au naTuraLEveryone’s gone green and sustainability is stylish! green materials and furniture are the wave of the future. Eco-awareness in home furnishings is huge this year, with natural and environmentally friendly furniture continuing the go-green trend.

Also, wood is king. It’s all about showing off the grain. Reclaimed wood furniture is huge. Think other natural materials too – stone and metals – and mix them up in a gorgeously natural scheme.

eVerYThing oLD is neW againRetro or vintage feel furnishings are popular for 2010. Imagine 50s, 60s and 70s designs re-imagined with a modern twist. (But we don’t dare talk about the 80s.) Taking a little bit of that nostalgic past into the present to create a new style of interior design is both modern and fun. Polished chrome is very popular. So is furniture often abstract in style with weird and wonderful shapes. Think low-lying round, oval or kidney shaped coffee tables.

Mix iT uPLess matchy-matchy, the trend in general is to a carefully edited, more relaxed ‘anything goes’ approach. Honestly, the unrealistic expectations from those home makeover TV shows could stress any redecorator out! It’s all about the mix and how you combine individual, disparate elements. The right classic 19th century piece will mix with certain vintage finds from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and with pieces designed this year.

Don Letendre is Executive Chef at the Opus hotel, Vancouver. This Yaletown favourite at 322 Davie is an internationally renowned chic boutique hotel, home to Elixir bistro moderne and the stylish Opus Bar (www.opushotel.com).

Chef’s contemporary and innovative cooking style blends diverse cooking experience gained in Asia, at Tokyo’s famed Domani Cucina restaurant and the Soba Ni Umazake Yoshimura, in Europe, at the Michelin starred Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons and L’Odeon, and at home in Vancouver in some of the city’s top dining rooms.

Catering to both the hotel’s international clientèle and discerning Vancouverites, Letendre’s ‘bistro moderne’ menu at Elixir reflects his modern interpretation of French inspired dishes and the traditional recipes and techniques he learned in Europe, while his O-bites Opus Bar menu delivers up-to-the-minute “cuisine without borders.”

Most recently, Chef Letendre has been responsible for the launch of Koko, the brand new 300 cover, Pan-Asian restaurant at Montreal’s new Opus Hotel. Letendre always insists on pristine ingredients and favours locally sourced, organic produce to create his beautifully presented and well balanced dishes.

Planning a window treatment can, at first glance, look quite complicated. So many choices. So many decisions. But follow these simple directions, and you’ll have it all together in no time.

Mary Dobson, spokesperson for Levol-or Window Fashions in Canada, knows whereof she speaks, and offers four great tips.

First off, Dobson says: “Think function. The reason we put coverings on our win-dows is to control natural light, and for privacy.”

With the right choice, you can have full sunshine, filtered light or complete black-out. The need for control, and for privacy, may well be different from room to room – and there are many ways of getting just the degree of control you want.

Second, she says: “Think style. A window treatment is part of a room, and it should co-ordinate with your design ideas and with your lifestyle.”

A window treatment can be traditional, contempo-rary, country, or any other style you feel comfortable with. Use colours, textures

and hardware to make the windows part of the room.

Third, Dobson advises: “Think products. There are many different types of roller shades, blinds, plus Romans and Panel-Trac. Decide which will serve you best.”

For example, cellulars are practical, ver-satile, save energy and control light in unique ways. Wood blinds, in a range of materials and colours, look great in the den, a home office, a kids’ room and even a dining room. Roller shades come in a rainbow of colours and fabrics. Roman shades add a touch a class. PanelTrac, floor to ceiling panels, can create new ways to use your living space.

And lastly, she says: “Measure everything. Measure it once, twice and even a third time, because to get the best results, all window coverings have to fit correctly.”

Your best guide to accurate measurement is the Levolor website, which gives you di-rections for every type of installation.

You can review the many types of win-dow coverings, study a wide range of dif-ferent styles for each room in your home, and get help with measuring online at www.levolor.ca.

IN vaNCouvER, pEopLE DaTE.Whether you’re looking to meet people at The Blarney Stone or at Atlantis Night Club, Ronald Lee, the lead coach of Man Meets Woman, is doing his best to teach people how to connect.

Lee said Vancouver can be one of the best and one of the toughest cities in which to date.

“[Vancouver] is one of the hottest places in North America to date… But we have a sense of entitlement.”

Lee said that sense of entitlement can cause people, particularly women, to reject potential mates based on flaws that might be more imagined than real.

While Lee bills himself as a practitioner in the art of seduction science, his teaching methods go far beyond simply picking someone up in a bar at that magic hour when the lights go up and the standards go down.

Lee teaches people to develop the most primary relationship of all – the relationship with yourself. After people know themselves, Lee said he is able to help them create “chemistry and romance.”

He also advised people not to spend too much time on Facebook or Twitter.

“Socially, they’re great tools,” he said. “But I’ve heard about people falling in love over e-mail, and then they meet and it’s a disaster.”

Lee said there’s no replacement for making eye contact with someone and saying hello, and if the man is able to take that first step and the woman has the courage to allow herself to meet someone new, a connection is very possible.

People who want to learn more about Lee’s approach can visit his website at www.manmeetswoman.com/.

Two “joined at the hip” NHL stars recently gave back in spades with their charitable donation.

Vancouver Canucks Daniel and Henrik Sedin, together with their wives, made a gift of $1.5 million to help build a new BC Children’s Hospital. The Swedish twins, who have lived in Vancouver for

10 years, made their gift to support the hospital’s Campaign for BC Children, and specifically to build the intensive care unit and diagnostics and imaging area in the

new hospital. The $200-million Campaign for BC Children passed the $100-million mark in December. Kudos to all!

mArk THE DATE!The 20th anniversary of Jeans Day is Thursday, Apr. 29. It’s a fun and easy event for people of all ages to participate

in and show their support of BC’s kids. Simply by purchasing a $5 button or $20 pin, you get a chance to wear your jeans to work or school on April 29 and help the kids at BC Children’s Hospital.

You can become a Jeans Day Champion. Champions are people who coordinate Jeans Day at their workplace. By inviting colleagues, family and friends to participate by purchasing a Jeans Day lapel pin or button you can help the hospital foundation to raise over $1 million.
