BLENDED SERVICE NOVEMBER 6TH AND 20TH
TAIZE WORSHIP EVERY WEDNESDAY

NOVEMBER 2016
November is a month dominated by Thanksgiving. Let me rephrase that, November is a
month dominated by preparations for Thanksgiving Day. It would be nice if there was a
whole month where we focused our energy on being thankful, but that is not the case. I think
it would be heavenly if thankfulness was a daily part of our character and how we interact
with the world and one another.
While contemplating the idea myself, I came across the following:
“When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity.” Elie
Wiesel
Interesting observation. It becomes even more powerful when we realize that a concentration
camp survivor of World War II said it!
As a child, Elie Wiesel witnessed firsthand the evils of discrimination, profiling, and then the
forced relocation to camps. He saw death and despair. He saw what happened to his Jewish
family, friends, and others who were deemed by the powerful to be ‘inferior’ and in need of
extermination.
Yet, he speaks of gratitude as something that makes us human.
Then I found this:
“When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give
thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies
in yourself.” Tecumseh
Thanksgiving is not an act, it is an attitude. It is a part of our character (or perhaps not). As
we work that more and more into our lives, we will see the world change, because we will
change.
Give thanks on Thanksgiving, and see how each and every day you can give thanks. Start it
with thanks. End it with thanks. This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be
glad in it!
Then see how thankfulness and gratitude will change you and the world around you.
Remember that God loves you, and so do I!
Pastor David

ACADEMY NEWS
Wow…what a busy first quarter we have had! In September we had picture days, grandparent’s
day, our first ever Scholastic book fair, morning “meet and greet” and bible Sunday with a
performance by our kindergarten students! And that was only the second month of
school….Whew!!!
As I mentioned we had our first ever Scholastic book fair and I am happy to report that we
raised $633.00 plus we received several new books for our library. Thank you to everybody who
supported us in our effort. In addition to that, we received a donation from a couple in our
congregation which provided one book for each of our students free of charge. And to keep the
cycle of giving in motion, Scholastic then matched that amount and provided books to other
children around the country in need of quality reading materials!
We also had our first “meet and greet” organized by Laurie Smith. For a couple of days
during drop-off some of our congregation members set up coffee, tea and pastries for our parents. It
was such a nice welcoming way to start the morning for our parents. Thank-you to Laurie Smith,
Karen Johnson, Phyllis and Jim Rasmussen and Sandy Guizzetti for taking the time to welcome and
greet our families. If you weren’t able to participate this time, we look forward to additional
opportunities in the near future.
I also want to “thank” Shannon Bryant who has served as the academy committee
chairperson for several years. She recently decided to relinquish her position as chairperson, but
remains on the committee. Shannon has been such a support person for both me and my staff
always lending a hand and helping to get things done. I am pleased you will still be a part of our
team and I also welcome Shana Elick to your position as chairperson. I am blessed to have such
awesome people surrounding me, my staff and this ministry!
As we enter into this season of “Thanksgiving” I give thanks for being able to continue to
make a difference in the lives of children through this awesome early learning center, for my staff
who give tirelessly to their students and to all of you who support this amazing ministry!
Blessings,
Rhonda Karrer, M.Ed.
Director
Operation Gratitude!
You’re invited to take part in our Thanksgiving Family Event of Gratitude and Thankfulness,
November 22nd and 23rd
This year instead of our annual “Thanksgiving Feast” we are turning the tables and spending time
creating cards and letters to those in the military who can’t be with their families this holiday
season. Join us in the fellowship hall between 8:00 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. on the 22nd & 23rd to
help create cards and/or write letters to our “heroes”. They will then be sent to Operation
Gratitude to be part of the care packages sent to U.S.A. service personnel around the world. The
more cards and letters we make the more lives we will touch! Plan on joining us as we model to
our students the “fruit of the spirit!”
Our congregation’s meet and greet volunteers will also be present with a fall snack for all to enjoy!

GROW YOUR FAITH
Pastor Richard Mauthe completed his
Study of St. Matthew’s Gospel
on Monday, October 31st.
Thank you for this amazing learning
opportunity!
Notes on Our Service of Worship—The Creed
Following the sermon, we rise to confess our faith, using one of three ecumenical creeds;
the Apostles and Nicene are regularly used, and the Athanasian is rarely used.
How did they come about?
The very earliest creed is found in the New Testament, usually in writings from Paul.
When Paul writes, “that Jesus Christ is Lord”, he is quoting a creed, a statement of belief. In those
days of the Roman Empire, it was considered treasonous not to say that “Caesar is lord.”
It was part of the duty of the Roman citizen to proclaim the reigning emperor as lord, and with
increasingly erratic behavior on the part of the emperors, it became a confession of faith that
Caesar was divine. Of course Followers of the Way could not confess that, and it led to terrible
persecution on occasion.
However, as the Christian Church grew, it needed to expand its understanding of exactly who
Jesus was, and is. Some creeds were written to confound heretics. The Apostles was written as the
statement of faith of the baptized.
Far from being a boring part of a repetitive liturgy, the Creeds are gifts given to the faithful,
so that we can bounce our ideas of exactly who Jesus is against the wisdom of the early Church.

SPRING 2017 TUCSON FESTIVAL OF BOOKS
Update on Tucson Book Festival
A booth has been reserved in Beautiful Savior’s name, so following the holidays we will
begin to assemble a team to help collect materials, man the booths, and prepare for two
wonderful days of representing the Lutheran Church in southern Arizona, as we celebrate
the 500th anniversary of Luther’s Reformation. The theme:
“Celebrating the Reformation and Its Literary Contributions to Our Culture.”
This is an opportunity to present the Good News of Jesus Christ to a world spinning faster
and faster out of control. As folks leave the established churches, look at what they are
replacing their need for spirituality with. While we Lutherans take pride in half a millennium
of the gospel ministry of Word and Sacrament, we are also looking forward to our witness in
the next 500 years.
In early January, there will be a sign-up sheet for those who want to volunteer to staff the
booth for a few hours. Also we will be asking the congregation for donations of any
devotional, religious, theological and scriptural books you might want to donate, to be given
out for free to booth visitors. We are also going to make available some books for sale;
copies of Living Lutheran, the magazine of the ELCA; catechisms; and so on.
Contact Richard Mauthe @ 610-442-0720 or [email protected] for more
information.

CONGREGATION UPDATE
COUNCIL
O R N E R
CHURCH COUNCIL
met Monday 10/24
at 6:15 p.m. in the
Youth Room
Quarterly Council meeting
Nov. 6th following worship
BSLC has been identified as an
emergency facility for Thornydale and
Butterfield Elementary schools. The
Marana Unified School District Safety
and Security Coordinator contacted
BSLC looking for a safe zone to
transfer students to in case one of the
schools had to move students out.
Situations requiring evacuation of the
schools are likely to be a building
emergency (flood or other incident
rendering the school immediately
unusable) as opposed to an incident
involving violence or threat.
The School District contacted us due to our
existing relationship and generous support of the
students of both of these schools with our Sunday
Dollars program.
Council Members met to discuss topics
related to the expansion of sound in the
Sanctuary, the most efficient use of
space for the Luther Room and Nursery,
points of contact for the Academy
should a facilities related incident occur,
training for office personnel and a
mid-January date for a leadership retreat.
We are switching over to Comcast for
our internet and phone services.
Comcast is working with other churches
in the vicinity to absorb installation costs
of new cabling. Most importantly we’ll
have access to a business grade modem
for faster connectivity. Thank you to the
Council for unanimously approving this
decision! Work should begin by the end
of November.
Join us after service on Sunday,
November 6th for a presentation and
updates from Team Leaders and to elect
new Council members. We’ll also hear
about upcoming events.
