haar titel gebruik om n verskil in mense

se lewe te maak.

Mej. Statebond Internasionaal word die

afgelope 12 jaar in Londen aangebied en

skep n geleentheid vir vroue om kulture-

le en liefdadigheidsambassadeurs vir hul

land te word. Dit word as n weldoener-

skoonheidskompetisie gereken.

Die wenners beywer hulle daarvoor om

n verskil in hul gemeenskappe te maak.

Anl de Swardt-Strydom is die nasiona-

le direkteur van die kompetisie in Suid-

Afrika. Sy het in 2012 die Mev. Statebond-

afdeling gewen.

Swardt-Strydom s Pieterse was oor-

stelp van vreugde toe sy as die wenner

aangewys is.

Sy het baie hard gewerk om te kom

waar sy is. Die kompetisie was baie straf.

Pieterse, n boorling van Hennenman,

vlieg vandag terug na Suid-Afrika.

raadslede, asook amptenare, gevolg deur in-

dringende onderhandelings met Sedibeng, is

die watertoevoer sowat n uur later herstel.

JaapKelder, voorsitter van dieNasionale Be-

lastingbetalersvereniging, s hulle het by Sedi-

beng Water navraag gedoen oor die rede hier-

voor. Ons het hulle gevra of die water weens

wanbetaling afgesny is. Daar was nie n reg-

streeks antwoord nie en is ons gevra om Sedi-

beng se prokureurs in Johannesburg te skakel.

Dieboodskapwatonsvandieprokureurs terug-

gekry het, is dat Sedibeng en diemunisipaliteit

oor die saak geskik het en dat die water weer

aangeskakel is. Dit is egter duidelik dat die wa-

tertoevoer weens wanbetaling afgesny is, s

Kelder. Die situasie is nou dat die inwoners

binnekort sonderwaterenelektrisiteit gaansit.

Dievraag is:Kandie inwonersuitnoodweerdie

AFTER being sidelined by society and

helped by temporarily do-gooders, the

residents of Delta Flats in Odendaalsrus are

ready to start a new chapter in their lives.

Every person deserves a bit of human

dignity and these people do not deserve to

live in these flats the way they do, says

Igor Scheurkogel, the leader of the registe-

red non-governmental organisation The

Power of One.

The people from Delta Flats are motiva-

ted and would like to take hands with the

Goldfields community to rebuild their

homes and regain their dignity, says

Scheurkogel.

There is a total of 27 homes in this

community. The two biggest problems are

sewage and power lines.

What we need to do to solve the sewage

problem is to unblock the manhole for this

community. The previous do-gooders cut

off and removed the power lines from the

houses. Now we have four to five houses

running on one plug which is very dange-

rous. The residents hope that each house

can get its own power box, allowing them

to have better control over their electrical

needs, he says.

Most of the residents in the complex have

to share a communal shower room.

It would be really humane if each family

could have their own shower, says

Scheurkogel.

He has made a list of all the needs of

every house in this community.

This community has enough space to

facilitate a kitchen, laundry room and

activity room for all the residents to use.

The activity room is aimed at helping

these people to overcome their circumstan-

ces and to make a better life for them all.

I challenge businesses and the Goldfields

community to help these people regain

their dignity. I have identified several

programmes which will make this commu-

nity self-sustained. Most of the people in

this community are unemployed or have

special needs. Just this one article can

never fully explain the circumstances these

people are living in. I have many plans and

ideas on how to help these people.

Some of the things needed to make this a

better place to live in include ceiling

boards, cupboards, doors, cement, paint,

toilets, geysers and materials to fix leaking

roofs and cracked walls and floors.

Scheurkogel hopes that 27 businesses in

the Goldfields community can each make

one house its responsibility.

CITIZEN CONCERNED FOR THE

BROADER MATJHABENG:

GEE, I wanted to laugh. Commu-

nication, marketing, branding?

Communicating to whom? Bran-

ding what?

I have over the years patiently

read all the letters residents write

to the newspaper and I know they

write out of anger and frustration

because nothing is ever done.

But the community as a whole

must be gullible for voting these of-

ficials into power every four years

or so.

They want to make Matjhabeng a

metro. Do you know why? Because

a municipal official working for a

metro falls under a different salary

bracket much higher than at a nor-

mal municipality.

All the residents have to do, is

look around and compare Matjha-

beng to other metros like Durban

and Johannesburg.

As big businesses we cannot even

get a meeting with the municipal

manager he is too busy. The mee-

Operation Pattala? In 15 different

places inWelkom freshwater is run-

ning into the street. Residents see

this and say to themselves: Why

must we pay? They dont care.

Thats right. Everything starts

with the mayor, the municipal ma-

nager and down. The level of incom-

petence is so high that the result is

a poorly runmunicipality like ours.

As for the thousands of youths out

there that might not be so lucky to

leave Welkom and study elsewhere,

they are stuck here. Which busines-

ses would like to invest here under

this level of incompetence? So how

will we create jobs?

It is very hard for any big busi-

ness to invest here and even for

smaller businesses. The situation

with the mining community has

been steadily deteriorating over the

past 15 years and has steadily gotten

worse.

Has the municipality done any

preventative work to prepare the ci-

ty? No, they just milk everyone,

while driving in fancy cars, and lea-

ve sewage running into our dams

and rivers.

They spin doctor everyone about

how good our water is and council-

lors have filters in their homes or

buy clean water themselves.

Sowhat about the vulnerable resi-

dents of our community, the ones

that cannot afford to pay? They talk

about national government grants.

That is what they used to do the lit-

tle maintenance they do.

The budget which I attended:

What a laugh. The bulk of the resi-

dents money goes into paying lazy

council officials cars, housing allo-

wances and of course salaries.

To the vulnerable residents of

Matjhabeng: Yes, Imaybe can afford

to pay my rates and taxes, but when

the golden goose in the city centre

pays for rates taxes the municipali-

ty must look after them.

Clean the streets, provide proper

service to all residents, get a clean

audit report from the auditor gene-

ral, have a person who can run the

municipality properly, minimize

waste, be the example to the resi-

dents before you crack the whip.

Thats right, the fish stinks from

the head.

Do you have the political will to

make a difference next April?

It will then be 20 years into de-

mocracy what have you done?

Need information and help with account

TIRED OF FIGHTING, Welkom:

ON behalf of Welkom residents, I

would like some answers from the

municipality.

I have been asking about this for

more than a year now and nobody

seems to be able to shed any light on

this subject.

I am talking about the mysterious

charges that appear on the bottom of

our municipal accounts. This seems

to be if the account is in arrears, but

there seems to be no formula and an

amount that I cannot justify in my

head.

Nobody can tellmewhat the abbre-

viation BE stands for (basic electrici-

ty tariff apparently paid by each and

every resident of Matjhabeng), and

how this amount is calculated.

I am sure we are being fleeced. My

tenants account (first account) owes

R8 719.65 and has been outstanding

or in arrears the whole year.

Her BE amount is R288.54. This

amount gets added onto the account

and then the following month it in-

creases.

What ridiculous interest charge is

that? Compounded? The other ac-

countwhichwaspaid late isR6 899.30

and the BE amount is R504.69.

This amount increases every

month until the arrears are finished.

This is not interest, as there is alrea-

dy an interest charge added onto cer-

tain amounts, and an interest co-

lumn.

How do we clear just this amount

so that it doesnt become R1 000 a

month? I have looked at many ac-

counts, andanyonewithanyoutstan-

ding amount will never ever be able

to clear their account.

The BE amount becomes more

thanyourmonthly amount eventual-

ly.

Perhaps I am completely off target

here, but if you lookat Johannesburg

accounts, every charge is explained

and the formulas given.

Must we just accept a charge that

we have no clue about, and how it is

calculated?

I really dont think so. Please some-

body explain what this is and if this

is even legal.

TheNationalCreditAct has amax-

imumamount that canbe chargedon

overdue accounts and I am sure this

is much more than stipulated.

Another bone of contention I have,

is that we have a company coming to

do readings every month.

They come into my yard every

single month, but some months I do

not have readings on my account.

There is an estimate instead,

which is not an estimate at all, more

like a guess.

These amounts are over inflated

normally. I refuse to pay the full esti-

mate amount and pay what I know I

have consumed.

Now the account is not fully paid,

and there they happily add a discon-

nection charge of over R300.

How many R300s are they getting

every month for this?

The disconnection charge used to

be forwhen themeterwas physically

cut, but nowseems to be apermanent

feature.

In short there are charges on our

accounts that nobody can explain. I

cannot fathom how they work this

out and we get different answers

from the municipality. Basically

they do not know. I have looked at

about 20 different accounts, these

amounts are on all of them, and are

very high. As stated in my letter, I

would like somebody to give us the

low down on:

1) What the abbreviation BE (basic

electricity) stands for?

2) How this amount is calculated?

3) Why this amount is different on

different accounts, even if the same

amounts are outstanding?

4) How they can charge interest and

this amount?

5) How they can put a R300 plus dis-

connection fee on accounts when

they dont even know what the cor-

rect amount is.

6) How they can send us an account

the day before it needs to be paid and

that it is in arrears as soon as the end

of the same month it was sent?

I am not sure if you can look into

this or publish this letter or a part of

it, or get someattorneys to giveusan-

swers. I have asked so many people

and nobody knows what this is and

how they get to this amount.

I AM highly displeased with the

Office in Welkom.

Their service is slowly, but surely

deteriorating. On numerous occasi-

ons I have been a witness and victim

of this. Recently I received a letter ad-

dressed to someone in Winburg.

My mail was also delivered to a

strangers post box. This is really

unacceptable, because we could lose

important and confidential mail due

to the incompetence or ignorance of

the postal employees.

The Post Office should do some-

thing about this; perhaps train their

staff or implement a new system. If

they are incapable of performing

their tasks then they should be repla-

ced with a more competent staff.

A CRACK DOWN by the Welkom Flying Squad on illegal miners resulted in the arrest of

PLEASE help me feed the poorest of the

poor on Christmas Day. These people have

nothing and many of them will not be able

to eat on this special day of the year.

Merle Henegan says 19 years ago God

came to her in a dream. He told her: Pick

up your cross, follow me and feed my

people do not be afraid. I will show you

the way.

Founder of Mamosa Ministries in Virgi-

nia and Meloding, Merle currently manages

three soup kitchens for poor children. They

are fed after school every day.

For most of these children this is their

only meal for the day. We also fill their

lunch tins to take home so that their sisters

or brothers at home can also have some-

thing to eat, says Merle.

Merle collects clothing for the poor. She

has five nursery schools for pre-schoolers.

These children are fed, taught and

clothed. At the end of the year those who

are of school-going age will graduate.

They can stand up against the best of

the best. I have volunteers who teach the

children. My caregivers have no income

and for their services I feed their families,

says Merle.

She says she established the crches to

take the children off the streets, educate

them and so doing prevent them from

becoming street children and dying from

starvation.

Merle is a true humanitarian; she has

dedicated her life to bettering the lives of

those who have nothing.

Christmas is coming up. There are so

many mouths to feed and so many have

nothing. I plead for people to come forward

and donate food or anything else they can

spare even money to make Christmas

special for the children, the poorest of the

poor. So many are sick, there are so many

families and so many children, says Merle.

This is my 19th year in ministry, feeding

these poorest of people everyday. And

Christmas is very special. It is my dream

for these people to have a plate of food like

other people do.

THE Matjhabeng Publicity Association will

hold a Christmas Carols by Candlelight

event at the North-West Stadium (Griffons

Stadium) on 14 December.

The gates will open at 17:00 and the

festivities will take place between 18:00

and 20:30.

Entrance is R10 (including a candle) and

children younger than 12 years of age

enter free.

There will be live entertainment and light

meals will be available.

Soft drinks will be for sale and the

public is encouraged to bring their own

picnic baskets.

No alcohol is allowed.

THE Zoe Life Centre is not only a non-profit

organisation, but a place where young girls

and women can go to, a haven for anyone who

finds herself in a crisis pregnancy.

Thosewhocome to the centre for counselling

will be assisted by a trained counsellor.

They do not do abortions.

lyn Hendricks, Cherise Basson, Gert Nieuwoudt (hoof) en Louisa Burger (grondslagfaseaf

rigter). Die wenners was Bernice Kirsten (senior), Carli Olivier (junior) en Hanru Nel (grond

slagfase).

DI leerlinge van die Laerskool Merriespruit het die volgende prestasies behaal: Marine van de Venter (kultuurtro

fee), Liane Pretorius (leerling met beste buitesport), Brandon Darker (veelsydigheidstrofee) en Robyn Crabb (kul

tuurtrofee vir aktiwiteite nie deur die skool aangebied nie).

DIE ATKV se Hennenmantak het in Oktober n koerantleeskompetisie gehou. n Rekordge

tal van 22 spanne van die Horskool Hennenman het hulle ingeskryf. N drie uitkloprondes

het n junior span met die kontantprys weggestap. Die wenspan is van links Marizanne

Delport, Monique Connor, Callie de Jager, ATKVorganiseerder, Shandr Grobbelaar en De

skool is as die duxleerling van 2013 aange

wys. Di slimkop spogmet akademiese ere

kleure en n gemiddelde persentasie van

88,7%. Hy het nege vakonderskeidings en

het aan twee olimpiades deelgeneem. Hy

het die hoogste punte in die graad vir wis

kunde, fisiese wetenskappe, rekeningkun

de, Afrikaans en wiskunde 3.

CHENIQUEDEWET van die Laerskool Koppie Alleen het baie trofe

ontvang. Sy is as beste meisiestennisspeler, beste o. 13netbalspe

ler, veelsydigstemeisiesleerling, sportvrou van die jaar, asook kom

mandojeugleier aangewys. Sywas ook vanjaar die skool se onder

hoofmeisie.
