HistoryThe U.S. Navy began construction on the original building in 1918 as facility for making torpedo shell casings and other weapons. Torpedoes, like the green MK-14 on view in the Art Center’s main hall, were manufactured onsite following World War I and throughout World War II. In the post-war era, the federal government used the complex to store materials as diverse as dinosaur bones and documents pertaining to the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials.

The City of Alexandria purchased the buildings in 1969. They remained unoccu-pied until 1974, when Marian Van Landingham—founder and first director of the Art Center—proposed the use of the two smallest buildings as an art center. When the Torpedo Factory Art Center opened to the public on September 15, 1974, it

was heralded as a visionary example of downtown revitalization and adaptive re-use and has subsequently been cited as a prototype for arts organizations around the world.
