EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Background
ITESA was commissioned by the Hepburn Shire Council and the Swiss & Italian Festa committee to carry out Market Research of attendees at the Family Festa Day held on Saturday 22nd October 2016. The event was held at the Hepburn Springs Reserve and this was the first time that ITESA has conducted this Market Research. The street parade was also included in the Market Research.
Purpose
The main purpose of this research is,
a. To estimate the Economic Impact of the event b. To identify attendee acceptance of the event c. To identify changes that could improve the presentation of the event to
encourage more visitors to the event.
Objectives

ESTIMATED ECONOMIC IMPACT (EEI)
The EEI has been produced using the ITESA model. The ITESA model varies in some ways from other models as it captures visitor expenditure in specific areas nominated by survey respondents and is not taken as an average across states or regions as is the case with some other models. The ITESA model is continually being improved to ensure that the outcomes are as accurate as possible. As the data used to generate the EEI is provided by event attendee’ responses taken at the Family Festa day and the Street Parade on Saturday 22nd October 2016. There will always be limitations as to the accuracy of the data, but this limitation is present in all models that rely on user feedback.
The table below shows the Estimated Economic Impact generated by the Swiss & Italian Festa 2016.
Estimated Economic Impact Report Summary 2016 Swiss & Italian Festa ACCOMMODATION & MEALS $157,806 TRAVEL $168,347 TOIURIST ATTRACTIONS $106,694 RETAIL SHOPPING $111,167 EVENT SPEND -‐ FOOD & DRINKS $153,014
Total Economic Impact $697,028
Ripple effect With an event of this magnitude the economic benefits are not only generated locally; they can and do have an economic benefit in areas in the local region and interstate. This is called a ripple effect. It is difficult and costly to measure the ripple effect, however, it is important to understand that it exists and that many businesses and organisations outside of Hepburn Springs benefit to varying degrees from the running of the Swiss & Italian Festa.
7
GENERAL SUMMARY
The weather condition was overcast with showers throughout the day. Many visitors arrived early to enjoy the many stalls and activities available. Unfortunately the event was closed down at 1.30pm owing to poor weather conditions.
METHODOLOGY
Survey Type
ITESA was commissioned to carry out a face to face survey of attendees at the event. The survey question list was loaded onto iPads, which were used to record the responses to the questions.
Survey Area
The survey area was the grassed area between the Spa Baths building and the Pavilion Café.
Survey Design
The survey was designed to capture data as required in “Objectives” above. Locals or people living within a specified kilometer radius may not be asked the same questions as those respondents who live outside of the specified radius. This design feature allows for more questions to be included in the question list without necessarily increasing the time taken to survey the attendee.
Survey Period
The survey period commenced at 10am at the start of the Street Parade. Two members of the ITESA survey team approached visitors on each side of Main Street and continued down to Ninth St. The remaining survey team members commenced surveys in the Family Festa Day area in the Hepburn Springs Reserve at 10.30am. The survey period was to finish at 3.30pm however as the event was shut down at 1.30pm. A meal break of 30 minutes was included in the survey period.
Completed Surveys
A total of 144 face-‐to-‐face surveys were completed during the survey period.
For the first time ITESA also provided an online link to the survey and a total of 2 surveys were completed online. The online survey period was extended and shut down on the 29th October. In total, 146 surveys were completed during both the face to face and on line survey period.
8
Survey Team
The survey team provided by ITESA consisted of 5 members. Between the hours of 10 am and 1.30pm the survey team approached attendees at various locations around the event venue, and asked them to participate in the survey.
To ensure that people were not surveyed twice, they were first asked if they had already completed the survey.
The responses to the face-‐to-‐face survey were collected using iPads supplied by ITESA. Attendees could view the question and their response on the iPad. If they were not satisfied with their response to a particular question, they had the opportunity to change their response, as they could go back to previous questions at any time.
Survey Team Performance
To ensure that the desired number of surveys were completed the survey team performance was also measured. The data shows that each survey team member collected 7.1 surveys per hour, giving an average time of approximately 8.45 minutes per completed survey. The adverse weather conditions contributed to this outcome.
To assist in gaining the required number of completed surveys the survey team members were strategically placed at the more popular vantage points around the event location.
Survey question list
The survey question list was designed to quickly and accurately gather responses to key questions, with minimal interference. None of the questions asked were mandatory, and some questions only appeared to certain respondents based on how they answered previous questions, which is why the total number of responses to different questions may vary.
The 2016 survey question list consisted of 34 questions. The questions were mainly multi choice, single response type questions. Whilst the list was extensive visitors were comfortable with the time taken to complete the survey.
Very few visitors refused to take the survey, and most thought it was a great way for them to assist the event organisers in gathering vital data. Those who would not complete the survey indicated the wet conditions as their reason.
9
ATTENDEE COMMENTS
While event attendees were completing the survey they made comments to the survey team that despite the weather they still enjoyed the event and were sympathetic towards the organisers.
