DISCOVERTHE MOOR
This was once a marshy tract of land with
a stream fl owing into Smithick Creek
where the Prince of Wales Pier now stands.
Following the completion of the waterfront
further development of the town could
only be inland, so what became The Moor
was drained and developed in the early
19th century. As a focal point of the town
it has been surrounded by many important
buildings including the Passmore-Edwards
municipal building containing the library and
award winning Falmouth Art Gallery, and the
Methodist church.
Cornish Pilot Gigs are now used
for racing but their primary original use was as a pilot vessel.
In the 19th century on fi rst sighting of a ship, crews would
race out to be the fi rst gig to get
their pilot on board to enable safe
passage and receive payment.
Sir Elton John is a great admirer and collector of Falmouth artist Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929). A large collection of Tuke’s paintings reside at Falmouth Art Gallery and The Poly.
FALMOUTH FOR GARDENS
From sub-tropical hideaways to more formal areas, Falmouth has a fascinating variety of gardens and green spaces. Explore Queen Mary, Gyllyngdune, Fox Rosehill Gardens or Kimberley Park all distinct, all with their own story to tell.

DISCOVERAN HISTORIC WATERFRONT
Discovery Quay or Events Square as its locally
known, is one of the main event hubs in
Falmouth and is a key venue for the likes of
Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, Falmouth Sea
Shanty Festival and Famouth Oyster Festival.
The square also houses the multi award-
winning National Maritime Museum Cornwall
as well as a great mix of quality eating and
drinking establishments and retail outlets.
FALMOUTH FOR HISTORY
Arwenack House & Manor opposite (now private residences not open to the public), is the oldest building in Falmouth, originally built in 1385 and then largely rebuilt around 1567-1571 by Sir John Killigrew, the fi rst Governor of Pendennis Castle. At that time it was described as ‘the fi nest and most costly house in the country’.
Cornish families have derived their livelihood from oyster dredging in the Carrick Roads. Falmouth working boats date back to the mid 19th Century. To preserve the ecology of the river system, sail power and hand-pulled dredges are used. This is the only oyster fi shery in Europe, if not the world, where such traditional methods are enforced.

THE COASTGyllyngvase Beach one of the most popular beaches in Cornwall, a Blue Flag status beach, with a wide arc of golden sand and inviting sea. The beach is also linked via the South West Coast Path to Swanpool Beach and Nature Reserve in one direction and Castle Beach and Pendennis Castle and point in the other. Falmouth town is only a 20 minute walk from here.
Falmouth Bay is a natural
anchorage for large
ships, protected from the
prevailing SW winds by
the Lizard. In the heyday
of sailing ships this would
have been one of the
busiest stretches of water
in the country, with ships
arriving in Falmouth from
around the world, seeking
fresh water, food and
orders for their captains.
The treacherous Manacles rocks lie between you and the Lizard Point and have been the graveyard of many ships. The most famous disaster was probably the loss of the liner Mohegan in 1898. 106 of the 197 people on board were lost.
The railway arrived in Falmouth in 1863. Originally intended to take goods and fresh fi sh up to London, it led to a tourism boom with people travelling to take advantage of Falmouth’s great beaches and coastline, sea air and sub-tropical vegetation. 2013 saw the 150th anniversary of the maritime line
