hundred year old La Immaculada Church, which sits in the heart of the town (right). After taking our lug-gage and opening the car door for us to enter, George presents a very cordial and accommodating welcome to the country. If everyone was this nice, we were in for a wonderful couple days. No sooner than we got into the car, we were on the Northern High-way heading southbound to Orange Walk. My eyes glued to the window, I marvel at the huge fields, large plots of land with houses spaced far apart. The winding road ahead reveals fields of flat land, grass, vegetation, little communities nestled miles apart, little stores here and there. About an hour into our ride, the sign comes into view “Welcome to Orange

location to truly experience Orange Walk. A smiling Cyndi de la Fuente greets us on our arrival and welcomes us to their comfy reception room. After a short introduction, we were off to check into our room and view the vari-ous accommodations that were offered. The Recipient of 2005’s Small Hotel of the Year Award by the Belize Tourism Board, Hotel de la Fuente provides clean comfortable accommodations for a variety of budgets from US$35.00 to US$70.00 per night. All rooms are air conditioned and offer Cable TV, private bath, mini dresser and/or closet, refrig-erator, coffee maker and coffee refills, computer desk and complimentary wire-less internet access and a large verandah. For guests looking for a more tran-quil atmosphere, De la Fuente offers its Premium rooms located in a newly con-structed East Wing. The back doors open to a balcony with a view of the green vegetation that oversees the historic New River. These rooms provide a more elegant feel with bronze colored décor and local art work. They also contain queen sized beds, flat screen TV’s and detailed hardwood furniture. Guests wishing to stay longer than just a couple days have the option to rent one of their Junior Suites which doubles as full apartments. These suites are avail-able for weekly and monthly rental and complete with all the amenities of the other units, in addition a stove, all cook-ing utensils and a futon. With 24 hours service reception, private parking and round the clock security, your stay at the Hotel de la Fuente offers comfort and a constant feel of safety. A visit to Orange Walk would not be complete without a visit to the many destinations the town offers. Cruising the New River by canoe or on a river tour, brings into view spectacular sites of flora and fauna with the chance to spot crocodiles up to 16 feet long sun-ning along the river banks. Tours to the Mayan ruins of Lamanai, Cuello and Nohmul, as well as wildlife adventures,

can easily be arranged with a short visit to the reception desk at the hotel. Dining options are many – with a general blend of Chinese, Spanish and Belizean cuisines. From the many choices, The San Pedro Sun chose to dine at Nahil Mayab – a tropical oasis in the heart of Orange Walk Town. “Nahil Mayab” Mayan for

“House of the Maya” is a family business jointly owned by Osmany and Lupe Salas, and Andres and Teresita Bur-gos. Managed by the ever charming Veronica Castillo, Nahil Mayab opened its doors to the public in August of 2008, and has since been offering an exceptional dining experience to all its patrons.

Award winning chef Maria Raquel Moreno cooks up a storm at Nahil. With romantic lights, tiled floors, stained hardwood furniture, tropi-cal colors and paintings dotting the walls, Najil Mayab provides a warm welcoming feel. As we are seated, the manager Ve-ronica comes out to welcome us, and to my surprise – well, I actually knew her. We were re-assured and certain that our dining experience would be a very pleasant one. How could dining not be awesome when we started with the drinks? Margaritas, Strawberry Daiquiris, Bailey’s Colada, and oh yes, the Mojitos!! They were to die for – at once refreshing and delicious.

With our appetites whetted, we were eager for our dinners. Chef Raquel decides to awe us with her choice of combination meals. The waiters come up to our table with a fabulous selection of dishes. Cham Cham (Empanadas made of corn dough flattened and filled with a choice of shredded chicken or pork) cooked on a comal and served with a minced onion/cilantro mix, chile machocado & tomato sauce; Hor’Och – corn balls cooked in black beans served with stewed chicken, chile machocado and pico de gallo; Nahil Mayab’s Poc Chuc – grilled pork strips sautéed with onions and bell peppers served with pureed beans, tomato salsa and

hand-made corn tortillas; and our favorite Creamy Mushroom Chicken – grilled chicken breast sautéed in a mushroom sauce served with steamed vegetables, creamy potatoes and gar-lic bread – absolutely delicioso! At Nahil Mayab, patrons have the choice of dining in the air conditioned dining hall or opt for the truly exotic dinner experience surrounded by the lush tropical garden in the courtyard. Winner of BTB’s 2010 Taste of Be-lize “Best of Belize”, Nahil Mayab is the ideal destination for a family dinner – even the little ones can have a good time in their full children’s playground; a romantic date under

candle light on the deck; business luncheons – with their complimentary wireless internet, online business can be conducted as you enjoy one of their many choices of meals; or just for friends to gather and socialize with their fully stocked bar with a huge variety of drink choices. With a full day’s activity and a hearty dinner, what else could we do - actually there are lots to be done – but for us, we were simply had. With one of the best meals we’ve had in a while, all we really wanted was to head back to our hotel – Hotel de la Fuente – to enjoy a relaxing night of

lifetime movies and snacks!! With an early start, the following morning saw us leaving Orange Walk. While there are lots to do and see in Orange walk, and with many choices of accommodations and so forth – we highly recommend a stay at Hotel de la Fuente and there is no way you can visit Orange Walk without stopping by Najil Mayab for a hearty meal – you will not be disappointed.

Answer: The sun.Riddle Me This: Q: What goes round the house and in the house but never touches the house? Answer below...

One Last Kiss “Hey, Dennis!” I pulled my golf cart over to the side of the road and said, “Ronny Andrews?” “Yeah, it’s me. You’ve changed,” he said. “I almost didn’t recognize you with all that long hair.” “My hair has been this long for five years,” I told him. Ronny said, “I moved back to the States nine years ago so you’re not the only thing that’s changed. Everything on the island has changed.” “I’m going up to Reef Village,” I said. “You want to ride up with me?” “Sure. Where is Reef Village?” “It’s on the other side of the bridge.” “There’s a bridge? Man, alive. Things have changed.” It was already after 9 p.m. so the only person around the bridge as weapproached was the watchman. As we reached the top of the bridge we en-countered a beautiful girl who had walked up to the top of the bridge from the other side. She started climbing over the railing. “Stop!” Ronny said. “We can’t let her jump. She’s trying to commit suicide.” “That’s ridiculous,” I said. “This bridge is not high enough to commit suicide. Maybe she’s just going swimming.” “Are you crazy? She’s dressed like she’s going to a party,” Ronny said. “Let me sweet talk her. You know I always have had a way with the ladies. If I can get my hands on her I’ll drag her off that railing.” I backed the golf cart up the bridge and stopped. “Honey, what are you doing?” Ronny called to her. “I am going to end my life,” she said. “My family gives me too much trouble.” “Wait,” he said, as he walked toward her. “Let’s talk about this. You are so attractive and you have such a beautiful party dress. Have you ever had a man in your life?” “Yes.” “Before you jump will you give me just one last kiss?” he asked, hopefully. She considered it carefully and then said, “Yes.” Ronny got his arms around her and kissed her like a man sucking oxygen from a SCUBA mask. When he came up for air his eyes were crossed. “My God!” he said. “It would be horrible if you killed yourself. Anyone who kisses like that has a lot to live for. Why would you want to commit suicide?” “Because my family gives me so much trouble for dressing up like a girl.”
