The International Visiting Fellowship Program in Women’s and Perinatal Pathology at Brown University was
created in 1989 by Dr. Don B. Singer, M.D. and Dr. Stuart C. Lauchlan, M.B., Ch.B. at Women & Infants Hospital
of Rhode Island (WIHRI). Since its inception, the program has provided subspecialty training to a dozen
physicians from academic medical centers across Europe and Asia, with an ongoing mission to expand
international expertise in the diagnosis, testing, and screening of diseases affecting women and newborns
worldwide.
This program is one of the training programs offered by the Department of Pathology at WIHRI, a specialty
women’s health teaching hospital in the U.S. with 19 full‐time faculty exclusively dedicated to diagnosis,
research, and education in these subspecialty fields. In addition to the international fellowship, the
Department is committed to the education of trainees in the U.S. through the Don B. Singer Fellowship in
Developmental and Pediatric Pathology and the Stuart C. Lauchlan Fellowship in Women’s Pathology. Twenty‐
one fellows have completed the Singer Fellowship since 1978, while the Lauchlan Fellowship, created in 1987,
has graduated 16 fellows to date.
By sharing WIHRI expertise in gynecologic and perinatal pathology with an international audience, our
Department envisions this fellowship program as a part of a global academic initiative to promote the
educational resources of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Over the next decade, we
aim to extend our collaborations with academic hospitals and medical schools in China, Taiwan, and
Bangladesh. Such efforts are also gaining recognition in the local community, culminating in a grant awarded
by the Luke Charitable Foundation of Rhode Island in 2011. In addition, prior fellows are receiving recognition
for their expertise at a national level; for example, Dr. Pi‐Yu Chen (2011 graduate) was recently named
Commissioner of the Gynecologic Pathology Committee of the Taiwan Pathology Society and Dr. Wanlin Anny
Shen (2012 graduate) was appointed Deputy Executive Secretary of the Gynecologic Pathology Committee.
The international visiting fellowship program continues to expand under the leadership of Drs. W. Dwayne
Lawrence, C.J. Sung, and M.R. Quddus. In this collaborative effort, the program upholds a vision in which
international physicians educated in gynecologic and perinatal pathology can bring newfound expertise to
their institutions, subsequently becoming leaders in the healthcare of women and newborns.
