01 Historic Balcomie Links, Crail. 02 The five-star British Golf Museum, St Andrews. 03 Accuracy off the tee is important at Ladybank.

A few miles down the coast from St Andrews is Kingsbarns, another classic links course that is regarded as one of Scotland’s finest. In October, Kingsbarns comes together with the Old Course and Carnoustie in Angus to host the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, one of the richest tournaments on the European Tour.

Continue along the epic Fife coastline and you will discover other local golfing gems. Crail Golfing Society is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, the original holes of its beautiful Balcomie Links laid out by ‘Old’ Tom Morris. Another super links test is Elie where the illustrious James Braid cut his teeth, the five-times Open champion and prolific course architect hailing from the pretty seaside town. Braid also redesigned Lundin Links, another unforgettable Fife course that is regularly used for Open qualifying and was voted among the top links courses in Britain by Golf Monthly magazine.

Fife may be synonymous with classic links courses but venture inland and you will find

lovely parkland venues like Ladybank, which has been used seven times for Open qualifying. All told, there are more than 45 golf courses in The Kingdom of Fife, just waiting to be discovered.

In St Andrews, close to the R&A clubhouse, you will find the fantastic British Golf Museum where you can delve into the game’s origins and learn all about those two famous golfing sons of Fife, ‘Old’ Tom Morris and James Braid.

Golf was born on Scotland’s east coast. The fact is that they have been swinging clubs in Fife since the 16th century. You will find an unyielding passion for golf in the region and the timeless courses will provide you with long-lasting memories. Knowledgeable local tour operators are on hand too, to help you compile your dream golfing itinerary.

Come to The Home of Golf and explore the golfing delights of The Kingdom of Fife. You can’t fail but be inspired playing in this beautiful region that has such an impressive golfing pedigree.

Nowhere has hosted the historic tournament more often than St Andrews, the list of past champions reading like a who’s who of golf. Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Bobby Jones, James Braid, all legends who competed for the famous Claret Jug and triumphed on the most recognisable stretch of links on the planet. Everyone dreams of playing the Old Course, and the great thing is that you can.

St Andrews also boasts several other fantastic golf courses. The New Course, still more than a century old, was created by ‘Old’ Tom Morris, the St Andrews born four-time Open Champion who also designed such timeless classics as Muirfield, Carnoustie and Royal Dornoch. The Jubilee Course and Eden Course are both excellent golfing tests and also in St Andrews there is the Castle Course, opened to great acclaim in 2008. In fact, it is possible to enjoy a complete golfing break without leaving St Andrews, but that would mean missing out on the many other superb courses in the region.

Away from the fairways

01 St Andrews West Sands. 02 The impressive Dunfermline Abbey.

Why not pay a visit to Scotland’s ancient capital of Dunfermline and see its 11th century Abbey, the final resting place of King Robert the Bruce? Plus you can step back in time by stopping in the carefully restored village of Culross, near Dunfermline, where the highlight is the striking 16th century palace. Then there is the magnificent Royal Palace of Falkland with its beautiful gardens. For fascinating history and grand architecture The Kingdom of Fife is difficult to beat.

For something a bit different, discover Scotland’s Secret Bunker. It’s not on a golf course, but underground, near St Andrews. See how the British Government planned to cope in the event of a nuclear attack. You can even eat in the underground canteen. An unusual setting for lunch it has to be said.

Wherever your interests lie beyond golf, you won’t be short of inspiration in The Kingdom of Fife. So get out and about and fully enjoy this beautiful region.

The Home of Golf is also the setting of Scotland’s oldest university. St Andrews is a place of learning where you can wander the atmospheric streets and admire the grandeur of historic buildings like St Salvator’s College and the dramatic ruins of St Andrews Cathedral. This is also a thriving town with excellent restaurants and fantastic independent stores. Why not pamper yourself at one of St Andrews’ five-star spa hotels, with the town being rich in luxury as well as history?

Explore the stunning stretch of Fife coastline known as the East Neuk and enjoy some of Scotland’s best beaches. Visit picturesque fishing villages like Crail, Elie and Pittenweem, to see historic harbours and choose fresh seafood from the menus of local restaurants. You can learn all about the seafaring tradition of the East Neuk at the excellent Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther where you can also sample some of the best fish and chips in Scotland at the Anstruther Fish Bar.

Apart from golf, Fife offers many other sporting attractions. You can go sailing, windsurfing and kayaking off the coast. If you like to enjoy your break at a more relaxed pace, then take a walk along the Fife Coastal Path and admire hidden coves and vast stretches of golden beach.

Witness some of the amazing wildlife in the region. There is a rich variety of marine life with grey seals and dolphins and the offshore islands of Inchcolm and Inchkeith, which you can visit, are home to thousands of seabirds. Vast numbers of puffins gather on the Isle of May, a world-renowned bird sanctuary and nature reserve that is within reach from Anstruther on a boat trip. Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve and Eden Estuary Local Nature Reserve are both just north of St Andrews. These reserves are recognised internationally for their very special habitats and for the rich variety of animals and plants.

Deep Sea World, Scotland’s national aquarium is a great day out, especially for the family. The aquarium is dramatically positioned beneath the Forth Bridge in North Queensferry and has all manner of marine life. You can swim with the sharks if you’re brave enough. You can also visit the Scottish Deer Centre, near the market town of Cupar, which has nine species of deer from around the world as well as bird-of-prey demonstrations.

if you’re golfing in The Kingdom of Fife, why not pop over to neighbouring Perthshire and sample the wonderful golf on offer in the beautiful heart of the country?

Perthshire has a fine golfing tradition. It was here five centuries ago that King James VI of Scotland bought his first set of clubs from a bowmaker! Now most towns and villages boast at least one golf course, some of which are recognized as being amongst the finest inland layouts in the world.

Glorious Gleneagles, with its King’s and Queen’s courses and one of the world’s great hotels attached, is golf at its regal best. Gleneagles is also home to the Jack Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course, a modern classic and the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Blairgowrie Rosemount is another piece of Perthshire golfing heaven, created by James Braid, who also conjured up Crieff Ferntower and Taymouth Castle at Kenmore. You are positively spoiled for golf in lush Perthshire where the backdrops are never less than dramatic and awe-inspiring. Offering a contrasting outlook to Fife, Perthshire is

where the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland meet and the stirring scenery can only serve to inspire your game to great heights.

Wherever you choose to play in Perthshire, remember there are two excellent golf discount schemes available. The Perthshire Green Card offers great value golf on 19 18-hole courses at £99 for five rounds and £65 for three rounds. The Perthshire Highlands Golf Ticket covers 12 9-hole courses at £65 (five days) and £40 (three days).
