SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAMS: Information about this summer’s “Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program is out now. Online and in-person registration for technology camps will be available May 21. These space-themed programs blast off at the Headquarters Palatka Library on Saturday, June 1 at 11am with special guests MOSH (Museum of Science and History) from Jacksonville) and the Kiwanis with their Toddler/Pre-School Festival. First-week festivities will continue through June 8 at all five branches. The Headquarters Library in Palatka will host a week-long “H.O.W. To” Festival, which features hands on workshops, local author events, and other “how-to” presentations from local experts. The week- long celebration will also include a “Generation Mars” Technology Training Camp (for children and teens ages 6-18) June 3-6, Family Tech Nights teaching computer science and LEGO robotics, and more. There will also be Technology Training Camps and H.O.W. To Festivals at all five libraries throughout the summer. After that, we launch into six weeks of themed story times (June 10-July 19) before landing at the Summer Reading Program Finale on Saturday, July 27. Separate Kick-off events are planned for the branch libraries including: Interlachen Library: June 4 at 10am Melrose Library: June 7 at 2pm Bostwick Library: June 7 at 3pm

• Crescent City Library: June 8 at 11am AFRICAN AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF ARTS: Attention artists: The Putnam County Library System’s first African American Festival of Arts invites all artists to share their talents with the community July 29th through August 3rd. All traditional art types will be accepted; poetry, painting, sculpture, fabric arts, and more. As these pieces will be displayed in the library, all entries must be suitable for a family-friendly environment. • Gathering/submitting pieces: Monday-Thursday, July 29 to August 1st all day

• Show open to public: August 3rd 9:00-12:00

PRESS RELEASES FOR UPCOMING PROGRAMS

PUTNAM COUNTY ARCHIVES:

• Living History Workshop: Have you ever wanted to portray someone from the past? Learn all about being a reenactor. Mischa Johns Putnam County Archivist and local historian will teach basic/beginner reenactor skills. Costume discussion and period research will be discussed. Future costume making workshops are a possibility. Upcoming workshops: Tuesday, May 21 from 2-4pm at the Headquarters Palatka Library (in the library makerspace). Thursday, May 23 from 2-3pm at the Melrose Library.

• Spark Basic Genealogy Workshops: These beginner genealogy workshops are designed to spark some interest, passion, and curiosity about our past! Join us at the Headquarters Palatka Library (in the “How To” Center/library makerspace) on Tuesday, June 4 Spark session at 2pm will focus on City Directories.

• Kiburi African Heritage Interest Group: Meets one Saturday each month at the Headquarters Palatka Library. On Saturday, June 8 at 10am, we welcome local author C.S. Bennett. Swahili for “Pride,” Kiburi is a group dedicated to the study of African and African-American culture, history, and interests and focuses on ways that we can come together to meet the needs of our community.

TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS in the How To Center (library makerspace) at the Headquarters Palatka Library:

• Homeschool Programs: The middle school age group meets weekly on Tuesdays at 10am through May 21. The elementary age group meets most Fridays at 1:30pm. Upcoming dates: May 24.

• Family Tech Camp: Learn the basics of

computer science with code.org and other fun “unplugged” activities. Meets every other Tuesday evening from 6-7:30pm. Upcoming workshops: Tuesday May 21. Summer dates: Tuesday, June 4 and Tuesday, June 18. Tuesday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 16. Workshops are open to children ages 6-18 and their parents. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Workshops are limited to 12 active* participants per session. Parents may sign up as either active or passive participants. *Active participants will use a computer and complete the coding challenges. Preregistration is required. ARE YOU STORM READY? Putnam County Emergency Management personnel and Rebecca Williams of IFAS, the Melrose Fire Department, and the Putnam County Health Department will be at the library to help you plan for the next storm. Learn electricity-free living and food storage plus cooking techniques. Discuss with the experts how you and your neighbors can be well prepared before, during and after the storm. Those with special medical needs can learn how to register for special assistance and about shelters. This important community conversation will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, May 30th at the Melrose Public Library.

GAMING AT THE INTERLACHEN LIBRARY: The Young Adult Chess Club meets every Wednesday from 4-6pm. The Yu-Gi-Oh Card Game Club meets Thursdays from 4-5:30pm. WEEKLY STORY TIMES: Join us at your local library for weekly interactive programs for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Toddler Time features 15 minutes of a rhymes and songs followed by 30 minutes of social time and play. Preschool Story Time features 30 minutes of stories, songs and/or a short movie followed by a craft. Both are part of the Every Child Ready to Read initiative. Age ranges included as a guide. Parent or caregiver participation is necessary and siblings are welcome. Times and dates: Headquarters Palatka Library:

• Toddler Time (infants and toddlers newborn through 23 months) every Monday at 10am

• Preschool Story Time (ages 2-5) Wednesdays at 10am

TALK TO A DCF REPRESENTATIVE AT YOUR LIBRARY! Need help completing your online or paper application for Food Assistance (SNAP)? A representative from the Department of Children and Families visits three of our five library branches in the Putnam County! There are three opportunities every week to get help with the benefit process. The DCF Representative can provide help with public assistance applications as well as customer authentication and in-person interviews. TALK TO SHINE AT THE LIBRARY: Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) is a local, free program designed to help people with Medicare and is offered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and your local Area Agency on Aging. For more information, contact the local liaison: Cheryl Harris. Phone Number: 1-800-96-ELDER or 1-800-963-5337. Please bring with you: Driver’s License or Photo I.D.; any letters from Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid which you may have received; Medicare and Social Security cards; a printout of medications from the pharmacy or the bottles; and proof of annual household income to determine if you qualify for extra help.
