The Erosion of the Truth: The Age of Conspiracy Theories
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then
you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jn
8:31-32
Conspiracy theories are as old as humanity. They are lies and we
humans, in our fallen nature, are prone to lies. Unfortunately, in
the age of 24/7 television, the internet, and the social media,
conspiracy theories are at an all-time high. What is most troubling
is not so much the proliferation of websites and social-media
platforms that manufacture these lies, it is that a growing number
of people whole-heartedly believe them. Indeed, the psalmist
lamentation thousands of years ago is fitting for today, “Help, O
Lord, for good men have vanished: truth has gone from the sons of
men. Falsehood they speak one to another, with lying lips, with a
false heart” (Ps 11:1-2). It is disturbing that many people are
losing the ability for critical thinking, which allows us to
critically evaluate or fact-check the information we are given.
So, what is a conspiracy theory? Well, here is a classic example
in the New Testament concerning the resurrection of Jesus:
While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into
the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had
happened. When the chief priests had met with the elders and
devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,
telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night
and stole him away while we were asleep.’ If this report gets to
the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” So,
the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And
this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very
day. Mt 28:11-15
The chief priests and the elders ‘devised an alternative fact’
and it stuck because that “story has been widely circulated among
the Jews to this day.” Those who believed that lie, rejected God’s
gift of the Messiah Jesus, the truth of his resurrection, and his
gift of salvation. That is the damaging effect of a conspiracy
theory.
In the last few years, we have heard about “alternative facts
and truths”, meaning that empirically verifiable truths are not
real and shouldn’t be trusted. As a result of this, the credibility
of the American democratic institutions is being undermined. For
eight years I heard that our government was the enemy and shouldn’t
be trusted; then it became the News Media, the medical system
represented by medical professionals, the law enforcement agencies,
and now it is the American Election Process. You know, W.B. Yeats
once said that when “things fall apart; the center can no longer
hold. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.” Friends, if we do not
curtail the proliferation of conspiracy theories, then we could be
headed into anarchy.

televisión 24/7, Internet y los medios sociales, las teorías de
conspiración están en su punto más alto. Las teorías de
conspiración son tan antiguas como la humanidad. Son mentiras y
nosotros los humanos, en nuestra naturaleza caída, somos propensos
a las mentiras. Desafortunadamente, en la era de la televisión
24/7, Internet y los medios sociales, las teorías de conspiración
están en su punto más alto. Lo más problemático no es tanto la
proliferación de sitios web y plataformas de medios sociales que
fabrican estas mentiras, sino que un número creciente de personas
las creen de todo corazón. De hecho, el lamento del salmista de
hace miles de años es apropiado para hoy, “En el Señor he puesto mi
refugio; ¿cómo dicen a mi alma: «Huye, cual un pájaro, hacia el
monte, porque los impíos tensan su arco, y ajustan sus flechas a la
cuerda para herir en la sombra a los de recto corazón?” (Sal
11:1-2) Es preocupante que muchas personas estén perdiendo la
capacidad de pensamiento crítico, lo que nos permite evaluar
críticamente o comprobar los hechos de la información que se nos
da. Entonces, ¿qué es una teoría de la conspiración? Bueno, aquí
hay un ejemplo clásico en el Nuevo Testamento sobre la resurrección

Los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos "idearon un hecho
alternativo" y se mantuvo porque esa "historia ha sido ampliamente
difundida entre los judíos hasta el día de hoy". Aquellos que
creyeron esa mentira, rechazaron el regalo de Dios del Jesús el
Mesías, la verdad de su resurrección, y su regalo de salvación. Ese
es el efecto perjudicial de una teoría conspirativa.
En los últimos años, hemos oído hablar de "hechos y verdades
alternativas", lo que significa que las verdades empíricamente
verificables no son reales y no se debe confiar en ellas. Como
resultado de ello, la credibilidad de las instituciones
democráticas estadounidenses está siendo socavada. Durante ocho
años escuché que nuestro gobierno era el enemigo y no se debía
confiar en él; luego se convirtió en los medios de comunicación, en
el sistema médico representado por profesionales de la medicina, en
los organismos de aplicación de la ley, y ahora es el proceso
electoral estadounidense. Sabes, W.B. Yeats dijo una vez que cuando
"las cosas se desmoronan; el centro ya no puede sostenerse". La
mera anarquía se desata en el mundo". Amigos, si no reducimos la

Something that a lot of people don’t know about me is that I
love magic. When I was a kid whenever I went to Disneyland I would
always get something from the magic shop on Main Street because I
loved it so much and wanted to know how the tricks were done. I
think that is one of the main things that drew me to magic is not
only being blown away by it but learning how things were done so I
could have a better understanding of the tricks. I feel like this
is an approach that a lot of people take to faith. We struggle with
our belief in God because we have never seen God. We struggle with
the Eucharist because we don’t see, taste, smell, or feel the
difference. But ultimately, people struggle with faith because they
want to have something tangible and something they fully understand
rather than diving into the mystery of faith and the beauty behind
it. This week we are talking with our year 1 teens about the
existence of God and how to see Him even when we think we can’t.

Algo que mucha gente no sabe de mí es que amo la magia. Cuando
era niño, cada vez que iba a Disneylandia siempre conseguía algo de
la tienda de magia de la calle Main porque me encantaba y quería
saber cómo se hacían los trucos. Creo que una de las principales
cosas que me atrajo a la magia no es sólo estar impresionado por
ella, sino también aprender cómo se hacían las cosas para poder
entender mejor los trucos. Siento que este es un enfoque que mucha
gente toma de la fe. Luchamos con nuestra creencia en Dios porque
nunca hemos visto a Dios. Luchamos con la Eucaristía porque no
vemos, probamos, olemos o sentimos la diferencia. Pero al final, la
gente lucha con la fe porque quieren tener algo perceptible y algo
que puedan entender completamente en lugar de sumergirse en el
misterio de la fe y la belleza que hay detrás de ella. Esta semana
estamos hablando con nuestros jóvenes de primer año sobre la
existencia de Dios y cómo verlo incluso cuando pensamos que no es

6 CHANGE OUR LIVES The letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are
among his earliest writings, and are driven by his belief and the
belief of the entire early Christian community that the return of
Christ was imminent, and that devoting time or attention to
anything else was foolish. As time progressed, this fervor subsided
a bit. Today we may wonder, when we hear these readings about the
coming end-times, if we should take them to heart, if we really
believe that Christ still may come upon us as a “thief at night” (1
Thessalonians 5:2). Does this mean that we are to stop our
long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and
planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund? Of
course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our lives,
living like children of the light and illuminating the world around
us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the
details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready to

CAMBIA NUESTRAS VIDAS Las cartas de Pablo a los tesalonicenses
están entre sus primeros escritos movidos por su creencia, y la
creencia de la comunidad de la Iglesia joven, de que el retorno de
Cristo era inminente, y que dedicar tiempo y atención a otras cosas
era tontería. Con el paso del tiempo este fervor disminuyó un poco.
Hoy, cuando escuchamos sobre la llegada del fin de los tiempos,
podemos preguntarnos si la tenemos que tomar en serio, si es que
realmente creemos que Cristo todavía puede venir por nosotros como
“un ladrón en la noche” (1 Tesalonicenses 5:2). ¿Significa esto que
debemos ponerle un paro a establecer metas a largo plazo,
despojarnos de nuestros calendarios y agendas anuales, dejar de
ahorrar para una educación universitaria? Por supuesto que no. Lo
que significa es que necesitamos cambiar nuestra vida, vivir como
hijos de las luz e ir iluminando el mundo que nos rodea con la luz
del Evangelio. Entonces, en aquél día, cuando los detalles de
nuestra vida diaria se tornen poco importantes, estaremos listos

amounts of drugs can be difficult for them to metabolize, so it’s
critical to follow your doctor’s instructions and to closely
monitor children who are old enough to administer their own
