Martin Barry, who leads the music at Our Lady s, has been working with help from Anne-Claire Bennion, the choir director at St Peters, to produce music from our own choirs which is recorded and then played at Mass. The process is painstakingly slow: Martin records all the parts and they are sent out to the singers who then record themselves singing along to the backing track. He then uses a music mixer programme to put all the separate recordings together. Martin records the musical accompaniment and some of the musicians at Our Lady s send in other instrumental tracks. So weve had bass guitar, drum, organ, piano, violin and clarinet (with more to come!). The final version will often include four-part harmony, descants and solo cantors. St Peter s organist, Christine OGrady, has also been busy, providing organ voluntaries for the beginning and end of Mass. Martin spends many hours each week preparing the music. Caroline Graham, who leads the youth band, has been turning her hand to the task as well, so listen out for some music from the younger members of our parish too! Its a real collaboration between the choirs of Our Ladys and St. Peters, and youth band, and its wonderful to be able to hear our own singers supporting the liturgy each Sunday. We regularly give to the Foodbank, The Leamington Night Shelter and the 3H project in Kenilworth. We respond to local appeals via Citizens Advice, family support workers and our schools. “What We Need to Do Now”

This is the title of a book by Chris Goodhall, which I came across after he gave talk to Leamington Café Scientifique. This usually meets in the Irish Club, but this time members met from their homes on Zoom. Chris was talking about what we need to do now for a zero carbon future in

the battle against climate change. His book is well worth reading (and, yes, it is readable). But, in it, he ends by listing a number of things that we can do ourselves. Check them out and see how

many apply to you:

Energy Buy green renewable electricity and

biogas Change to LED lighting Install solar panels Buy really efficient domestic appliances House insulation Reduce heat loss around your home Insulate walls Install heat pumps Keep temperatures lower Transport Fly less and stay longer Use public transport, cycle or walk Drive an electric car Food Cut down on beef and lamb Choose vegetarian/vegan alternatives Avoid air-freighted food Buy less to avoid waste Other Goods Be fashion aware – buy less / keep

longer / then send to a charity shop Keep phones / electrical goods longer

and then recycle them Buy second-hand Politics Join an activist group Vote for politicians who prioritise

Climate Change action How did you do? Brian Austin

Kindaid Zoom Quiz Having missed several fundraising events due to lockdown Mary Rouse and Martin Barry kindly offered to organise a Quiz for our supporters. This doubled as a social event and as a fundraiser. There was a brilliant response and around 14 teams, including young parish members and past parishioners now living in Northern Ireland, joined the group on Friday 26 June. A voluntary contribution was suggested.

Martin as question master was accompanied by his pet parrot (who, thankfully, didn’t squawk the answers!). The evening was lively with questions suitable for all ages and a range of categories from children’s television programmes to movie themes to identifying a book from its first line.

Thank you, Mary and Martin, for organising this event and thank you to everyone who supported it. If you missed out on it this time, look out for the next one. Jo Mander

EVANGELISATION (Part I)

Despite the restrictions during these Coronavirus times, there are still many opportunities to share the The Joy of the Gospel. First we need to be prepared.

If we are introducing people to Jesus we need to stay close to Him and make sure that our own faith is being nurtured:

Spend time in prayer daily with the rosary if possible.

Read the Bible daily.

Watch live streaming of Mass regularly.

Fast periodically.

Participate virtually in a small Christian community such as a parish prayer and/or Bible study group. Attend virtual events, retreats, talks or courses to deepen your Christian faith.

Read Catholic literature: magazines, books, or newspapers.

Reflect on the witness of others.

Remember that Jesus lives in everyone.

Frequently remind yourself of the Kerygma:

“Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you”.

Evangelii Gaudium 164 (The Joy of the Gospel) Pope Francis.

The Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC) has set up a new service – a Covid-19

Crisis Counselling Support Service (CCSS). It is for people working in the NHS who are directly impacted by COVID-19, not just frontline medical staff, but also those in ancillary roles in an NHS setting (e.g. nursing assistants, cleaners, porters etc); paramedics and anyone working within the ambulance services who is directly impacted by COVID-19; people working in a residential care home setting being directly impacted by caring for people who have COVID-19; and those who have been bereaved during this time – whether the bereavement is due to COVID-19 infection or not. The crisis counselling support service offers up to ten sessions of counselling on a no fee basis.

The ACC works alongside IAPT (Independent Access to Psychology Therapies) . The latter focusses on those seeking help for anxiety and depression disorders, and those who for those who have lost their jobs.

If you would like to take up either service, the referral team can be contacted on 02476 671 090 and the phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 9.00 am until 3.30 pm. The service is currently only able to offer telephone appointments but once the Government lifts the lockdown further counsellors will be able to see clients face to face either at their GP practice or somewhere close by. Please note home visits are not available.

C laudia Pallister is currently running the Warwick Deanery Mother’s Prayer Group online via Zoom. It is on Thursdays at

a family-friendly time of 8.30 pm (when the kids are hopefully tucked up in bed). All are welcome to join. We already have members from St Joseph’s, St Mary Immaculate and St Peter’s. After welcoming everyone, we follow a beautiful prayer booklet. We sing a little, read scriptures and pray for all the children. We are a small group so you won’t feel intimidated. Maybe home-schooling has left you feeling a little washed out and frazzled! Join us for some moral support, friendship and a spiritual lift. For more details please

The NEXT EDITION is planned for 15/16 August. Please submit your articles, pictures, prayers etc by 7 August to [email protected]
