Hearst CastleA San Luis Obispo County showpiece,
the singular Hearst Castle ranks as one
of the most popular tourist destinations
in California. William Randolph Hearst
began designing his magnificent home
in 1919, but didn’t complete construction
until 1947. The 127-acre complex includes
the castle, three guest houses, two swim-
ming pools and a network of terraces,
walkways and gardens. Perched atop
a prominence that Hearst dubbed “la
cuesta encantada” (Spanish for “The En-
chanted Hill” ®), the Mediterranean-style
estate boasts opulent décor, lush land-
scaping and sparkling pools, all guaran-
teed to transport visitors back in time to
a storied moment in California history.
To explore the castle, choose from
several different guided tours, including
the Grand Rooms, Upstairs Suites and
Cottages & Kitchen tours. The Evening
Tour covers both upper and lower floors
and features trained volunteers posing
in striking vignettes. These evocative
scenes depict activities enjoyed by
20th-century guests who stayed and
played at the spectacular castle.

A haven of sandy beaches and open
spaces, fertile farms and vibrant cities,
San Luis Obispo County ranks among the
most popular destinations in California.
Beyond the scenic and recreational
wealth, however, it’s the people living
here who make the county such a special
place. Long-time residents carry on
family traditions in fields ranging from
fishing to winemaking, plein air painting
to the performing arts, while newcomers
infuse the region with innovative energy
and ideas. Here, dreams can come true,
whether they involve athletic, artistic or
entrepreneurial success, or simply put-
ting down roots in a friendly community.
Meet five unique people who call San
Luis Obispo County home!

Organic Chemistry
For Chef Julie Simon, the measure of a good day is marked by
inspiration, passion and collaboration.
Mentored by such renowned local chefs as Meagan Loring
and Pandee Pearson, the Parisian-born Simon brought her bold
creativity to Thomas Hill Organics, a market bistro and wine bar
in Paso Robles, where she has headed up the kitchen since the
fall of 2009. Thanks to the 10-acre organic farm operated by the
restaurant’s owners, Joe and Debbie Thomas, as well as the
ample bounty available from other select San Luis Obispo
County producers, the bistro’s innovative cuisine has emerged
as a shining example of true farm-to-table fare.
The ever-changing nature of this seasonal approach to
menu-planning means that Simon and her kitchen col-
leagues continually encourage each other to think outside
the toque. With backgrounds in French, Filipino, Italian and
Mexican cuisines, “we’ve all got different approaches to
food,” said Simon. “It’s a super-fun, eclectic mix, but we al-
ways respect the traditions behind each dish, and keep
things true to their origin.” With a twinkle in her eye, Simon
added, “when you’re tossing ideas around and get that posi-
tive energy going, it really translates into the food.” m

The hallmarks of Anne Laddon’s artwork are color and compo-
sition, boldly expressed in a variety of media, especially oils and
pastels. Laddon creates her studies plein air, and then refines
the paintings in her studio. Her diverse subjects range from
landscapes to landmarks, portraits to still life, urban to rural.
Laddon had already established herself as a successful
artist, first in San Francisco and then on the East Coast, when
she followed her heart to Paso Robles in the 1980s. She began
a family and immersed herself in the local art scene, while
continuing to maintain a national gallery presence. In 2007,
Laddon spotted an empty commercial building in downtown
Paso Robles and thought “that would be perfect for an art
center.” She promptly founded Studios on the Park, Inc., a
non-profit corporation “dedicated to providing a creative,
educational, and transformational experience to enhance
understanding and appreciation of the visual arts.”
The welcoming space serves as a gallery for more than 30
artists in residence and – depending on their media – also pro-
vides working studio space. Laddon serves as artistic director
of the project, which she declared was “stimulating, challeng-
ing, and constantly evolving. We inspire and energize each
other all the time – it’s a blast!” m

Oceanto Table
Well before the “farm-to-table” movement caught on, Mark
and Bonnie Tognazzini — both longtime fixtures in the Morro
Bay fishing industry — had hooked their customers on
“ocean-to-table” dining.
Mark has captained his Bonnie Marietta fishing boat since
1981, and in 1997, the couple starting selling his catch directly
from her decks. A simple enough idea, but it made them realize
how much people enjoyed the direct connection with them.
When the Tognazzinis opened their Dockside Restaurant in
2004, followed by the launch of their adjacent Dockside Too
fish market, they explained that “it was a natural evolution to
extend that concept.”
When seafood in either establishment comes from local
fishermen, it is proudly labeled with the names of both the
boat and her captain. This setup not only allows the Tognazzinis
to support their community, but also to provide patrons with
the freshest fish possible in a casual atmosphere and at afford-
able prices.
“We like to say we offer 5-star fish with 3-star dining,”
said Mark. “We just happened to be out in front of the local,
seasonal and knowing-who-provided-your-dinner [trend] be-
fore it was the popular thing to do. Now it seems many people
are doing what we’ve done for years.” m

Vines &History
Cindy Steinbeck’s ancestors settled near Paso Robles in 1874
and helped transform the tiny town into a thriving city. Then,
when her great-great grandparents planted grapes and began
making wine in 1901, they launched a joyous family tradition.
A fifth-generation farmer, Steinbeck works the land that her
great-grandparents purchased in 1921. Located seven miles
east of downtown, it currently supports 500 acres of premium
wine grapes.
As a child, Steinbeck viewed the farm as an irresistible
playground. At the time, barley and cattle dominated the fields,
but in 1982 her father began planting grapes. Today, the fruit is
sold to local wineries, save for one-percent, which is reserved
for the family’s luscious Steinbeck label wines. Despite the
labor required to grow her crop, Steinbeck continues to regard
the farm as a place for play.
Piloting a 1959 Jeep, Steinbeck often ferries visitors
around the vineyard. A trained historian, she regales them with
local lore and family anecdotes, showcasing the bountiful vine-
yard through her eyes.
“The stories are what attract people to our community,”
Steinbeck smiled, “and I guess I’m a modern day story teller.
When I’m face-to-face with customers, I consider that play.
It’s far more than just work, it’s who I am. And it’s fun!” m

CurtainCall
The Cal Poly Performing Arts Center presents a dazzling variety
of live performances in downtown San Luis Obispo. Entertain-
ment ranging from ballet to musicals to stand-up comedy
animates the elegant complex, where local and international
performers mount 300 shows each year.
“The first time I saw a performance there,” said Heather
Cochrane, executive director of the center’s fundraising arm,
Foundation for the Performing Arts Center (FPAC), “I was
astounded that a town this size had a venue of that caliber.”
On the job, some of Cochrane’s most treasured moments
occur during the youth outreach events that bring hundreds
of schoolchildren to the center. “The kids come into the hall
and they’re blown away,” she said. “I love to see how exciting
the magic of live arts is to them.
“The performing arts remind people about the joy of
being alive,” Cochrane declared. “That it’s not just about pay-
ing bills or making a profit, that creativity, beauty and joy are
just as important.”
Cochrane, often accompanied by her husband and chil-
dren, attends as many Cal Poly Performing Arts Center pro-
ductions as possible. “I want the arts to be part of our family’s
life,” she smiled, “because I think play is just as important as
work.” m

A prime destination for wine lovers, San Luis Obispo
County offers a delightful variety of tasting experiences.
With some 230 wineries vinifying 40 different grape vari-
eties, there is a vintage and venue to satisfy every preference.
Designated wine trails and clustered tasting rooms make it
easy to plan a memorable itinerary for a quick afternoon or
long weekend of tasting. The uncrowded roads and glorious
scenery enhance the wonderful wines, working a playful
magic that encourages visitors to relax, explore and savor
the moment.
Winemaking has flourished in the county since about
1790, when Franciscan friars began crafting sacramental
vintages. Today, roughly 27,000 acres of vineyards flourish
amid the county’s rolling hills and coastal valleys, where
local microclimates support premium grape varieties repre-
senting the world’s finest viticultural regions. Unique soils,
climates and exposures distinguish San Luis Obispo
County and its American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), which
are official designations for distinct growing regions. These
AVAs include Arroyo Grande Valley, Edna Valley and a por-
tion of Santa Maria Valley, in the southern region. In the
north are the Paso Robles and York Mountain AVAs, while
the entire county is contained within the 250-mile long
Central Coast AVA. Continued on page 38

Effectively dividing San Luis Obispo County, the Santa Lucia
Range angles northwest to southeast, creating two distinctly dif-
ferent growing regions. North of the range stretches a land of
oak-studded canyons and gentle hills that is home to 75% of
the county’s wineries, each with its own motif and singular
charm. Tasting rooms nestle among scenic canyons and perch
atop hills with spectacular views of clear skies and extravagant
sunsets. In downtown Paso Robles, more than a dozen tasting
rooms and wine bars lie within walking distance of centrally-lo-
cated City Park.
The generally alkaline soils of North County run to sandy
loam, mudstone, and calcareous shale, many studded with fos-
sils and even ancient whalebones. Long hot summers prevail,
and diurnal temperature swings (the difference between daily
highs and lows) can measure 50 degrees F. Such radical swings
provide optimal heat to ripen grapes, but also enough nocturnal
cooling to promote balanced fruit acidity. The vineyards east of
U.S. Highway 101 provide ideal conditions for growing robust
reds, including Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as
such whites as Sauvignon Blanc and Marsanne. West of the
highway, ocean breezes are funneled through a series of notches
in the Santa Lucia Range, called the Templeton Gap. This moist
maritime influence suits cooler-weather grapes, including Pinot
Noir and Chardonnay, both of which flourish in the fog-
touched vineyards. Continued on page 40

With nearly 30 wineries and upwards of 3,000 acres of vine-
yards, south San Luis Obispo County offers plenty of vinous vari-
ety. Wineries operate amid apple orchards, along verdant coastal
valleys, and within earshot of downtown bustle. Seaside tasting
rooms provide tantalizing samples, while others afford views of in-
land valleys and the distinctive chain of grass-covered volcanic
plugs – called the Nine Sisters – marking the landscape between
San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Throughout South County, spe-
cialties range from Burgundian- and Rhône-style vintages, to
sparkling wine made in the time-tested methode champenoise.
While hot summers and frigid winters dominate the
county’s northern half, South County features a year-round
maritime climate. Due to the east-west orientation of the valleys,
the region’s vineyards bask in steady breezes blowing directly off
the Pacific Ocean. This soft, moist air moderates vineyard tem-
peratures and promotes a long growing season, which allows
grapes to remain on the vine well into late fall. Such extended
“hang time” produces fruit with extraordinary balance and in-
tense varietal components. Soils include volcanic material,
loam-and-clay topsoil and calcareous marine deposits left be-
hind when the ancient sea receded, yielding wines with mar-
velously complex flavors. m
