Downland streams, with their clear freshwater, meet at Brighstone Millandform an intriguing network of mill pondsand sluices. These energetic waters passunder a mystical ancient oak knownlocally as theDragon Treebeforetumbling over a spectacular waterfall enroute to the sea. Water mills operatedhere for over 900 years
until the 1960s but all buildings havenow been converted to private homes.Only the mill ponds remain.
Chinesare very much a feature of theSouth of the island where streams flowfrom the downs and cut through thesoft cliffs producing a unique habitatfor wildlife.
Look carefully and youmight catch a glimpse ofthe rare Glanville Fritillarybutterfly,kestrelandoccasionally a PeregrineFalcon. Coastal erosion isvery apparent here andfossilsfound on this coasthave brought about thename “Dinosaur Isle”.
The picturesque cottages in NorthStreet include a free museumwhich brings to life the traditionsof the local people and the bravelifeboat men of years past. Next door isMyrtle Cottagewhich was home to the world
famous pioneer fossil hunter theRevd. William Fox. Well known for his tea parties, heentertained many of the most eminent geologists of hisday and had more dinosaurs named after him than anyother Englishman.
Mottistone Millwas built in the 18th century but a watermill onthis site was recorded in theDomesday Survey of 1085-86. The artist JMW Turner sketched thismill in the 19th Century. However ithas long been converted to acottage so please respect theowner’s privacy when passing.
The steep sided tracks which ascend tothe downs are “hollow ways” formed by water erosion and the movement ofanimals. Used as drove ways in medievaltimes, they are now a haven for wildlifeincluding badgers, while buzzardscircle above. At the top of the downs isBrighstone Forest, a vast area of treeswith trails and cycle paths.
ExploreBrighstoneDrive, walk, ride, cycle and swim in this tranquil Area ofOutstanding Natural Beauty. Even paraglide above it if you are feeling adventurous! Roam the extensive network of footpaths &bridleways surrounding Brighstone. Climb rollingchalk downland behind a string of pretty villages &hamlets for a panoramic view of the whole area.Wander gentle leafy lanes or investigate the adjacentcoastline of soft cliffs and sandy beaches.
Bronze Age barrows and ancient hollow ways featurehere, also beautiful churches and traditional thatchedcottages of chalk ‘clunch’. Local wildlife includes redsquirrels and rare butterflies. Dinosaur and other fossilsmay be found on the beaches.
Inside this leaflet you will find a colourful mapshowing a “figure of eight” walk in Brighstone andhighlighting interesting wildlife, historic buildings andbeautiful scenery. The South section of the walkfollows streams and farmland down to the sea and theNorth section follows ancient trails up to the downs.
