Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Summer greetings from your Stewardship Commission! Whether you are doing a
“stay-cation” or a “vacation” we are asking you to keep in mind our upcoming Silent
Auction & Beefsteak Dinner on Saturday October 29. While you’re out and about, please
be alert to things that could be “auctioned” off, be it items for a basket, a stand alone item, or a
week or weekend stay in your “vacation” home. You can also consider donating a service or
experience such as a dinner party, a series of desserts or anything else your imagination can
conjure up. Gift cards and baskets of cheer are very popular!
The Silent Auction is St. David’s biggest fund raiser of the year and we count on all of you to
continue the success of past years.
The pre-planning for this event has been ongoing and requires a lot of hands-on preparation as
time gets close. We ask that you begin to think about how you may be able help us make this
event a success. We will need help making baskets, preparing bid sheets, assisting the day of
the event, cleaning up.
In the meanwhile any questions you may have about this event can be directed to any Steward-
ship Commission member: David DeSmith, Mary-Esther Arther, Rich Dobson, Kathy Kent,
Christine Rudolphi, John Simonelli or Jennifer Trevisan.

tries by email or send new family photographs. A printed copy of
the directory is in the narthex (on the easel with the Iced Tea sign
up) for the use of people without a computer to check their entry
or for those who prefer a printed copy to read.

FOYER GROUPS
We have recently wrapped up another enjoyable round of small group dinners, and are preparing to launch
2016-2017 groups to start up in the fall. For those of you who are not familiar with FOYERS, our groups are
usually 6-9 people who gather in each home monthly or semi- monthly starting in October and continuing un-
til each household has hosted (and sometimes we repeat or have a “reunion” event!). Typically the host pro-
vides the main course and beverages and the others bring appetizer, side dish or dessert. We are very infor-
mal, and there are no culinary or “fancy” requirements. The whole idea is to get to know one another better
and have fun!
Watch for the signup sheet in the narthex soon, and we encourage all who are interested to sign up during the
summer. If you can’t commit to being a regular participant or you would like to come and see what it’s like,
just sign on the “guest” list and one of our hosts will contact you for a specific dinner. If you have any ques-
tions, please ask anyone who has been part of FOYERS (we’ll make ourselves known!) or email Nancy Ward,
WALMART CARD DONATIONS REQUESTED
Two of our Outreach families have school-aged children – you
know how fast they grow and how many things they need for
the first day of school.
We are collecting Walmart cards again this year, continuing
into the first week of August.
Walmart cards in an envelope with the donor’s name (for tax
credit) may be left in the marked basket on the grocery card
sales table or in the Parish Administrator mailbox. Checks
should be made payable to St. David’s with ‘Walmart card’ in
the memo line.

College graduates—Kristen Roehrer from the University of Maryland and Quillan
Snyder from Parsons School of Design.
Jeanne Grieshaber who retired after 31 years as a first grade teacher at Martha B. Day
School in Bloomingdale. She was voted Teacher of the Year numerous times.
The Odians—grandparents Mike and Sondra, parents Mark and Andrea, big sister
Alivia Maia on the birth of Alaina Mira on May 29.

Going Local
The Guiding Team would like to thank Julie
Dolci, Herb Grieshaber, Irene Williams,
Sondra & Mike Odian, Nancy, Bob, and
Brian Ward, Jim Alden & David DeSmith for
“Going Local” at the Kinnelon Memorial
Day Event.
Although we were not able to have a table
with refreshments and “Be a neighbor” but-
tons outdoors, the group joined a packed municipal building to honor our veterans.
Brian, the Wards’ dog, helped start a nice conversation about being neighbors!
The Guiding Team will resume its role in facilitating the Going Local process in August. Lots
of great energy and ideas are starting to bubble up. Feel free to talk with anyone of the Guid-
ing Team about your ideas or your own experiences of going local.
The Guiding Team attended the quarterly Diocesan Meeting on Going Local on June 11th.
All 6 churches attending shared their Going Local “experiment”. Our experiment and our but-
ton – Be a Neighbor- were very well received. It even got a “high 5” from the consultant, John

2016 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients
David Carpenter (Posthumous) & Joan Carpenter
Well known and much beloved as “the outreach conscience” of the vestry, David lived his faith every day. As an occasional usher and reader, he also was a vestry member and war-den. David was active in the diocese as a recorder and editor of Bishop Spong’s lectures. He was passionate about the work of Habitat for Humanity to which he devoted much of his time and talent for many years. David was a member of the Men’s Group and was a constant presence when it came to maintaining our buildings and grounds. Both he and his wife, Joan, regularly substituted for our sexton when needed. A parish member for nine years, David died in 1999. A “quiet giant” who continues to support St. David’s in many ways, Joan has been a parish member for 30 years. She served on the Altar Guild and also devoted her time and talents to St. Paul’s Men’s Shelter in Paterson, Sunday coffee hour, the parish plant sale and the women’s group. Her teaching career of 41 years continues to benefit all both outside and inside the congregation.

Vestry Meeting Highlights – June 16, 2016
Following the opening prayer led by Lee Moody, Dale Wilhelm led a Dwelling In The Word
exercise based on Luke 10 in which each vestry member drew a portion of the reading on a
slip of paper and said what the Spirit was saying to them based on what was written on the
slip.
We discussed issues brought up by the congregation, including favorable comments on the
new carpeting (but not necessarily the smell) and a suggestion that we consider resuming
monthly Sunday breakfasts between services, with a member of the congregation as speaker.
Dale Wilhelm, reporting for the Guiding Team, noted that representatives of congregations
participating in Going Local met on June 7th to discuss their present and next experiments –
and that ours will be actively participating in the next Firemen’s Breakfast. Irene Williams re-
ported that we would also be participating K-Fest on October 1st. David reported on his meet-
ing with Going Local Parish Leaders and other Diocesan Staff on June 15th. He noted that
there are now 14 participating congregations, and that it’s the direction the Diocese will con-
tinue to go. At the meeting they discussed where the Diocese currently is in the process and
where it’s headed, and David stressed that Scripture must be primary and normative, and that
this is a huge culture change from what we’re used to, so we need education and support in or-
der to deal with this in a positive way.
John Simonelli reported that the Beer Pairing event that was scheduled for July 23rd has been
postponed for a year to give the Stewardship Commission more time to prepare for the event.
Mary-Esther Arther reported that there are still 13 Time and Talent forms outstanding, and
urged Vestry members to follow up with those on their respective lists so that we can compile
the results in a timely manner.
We offered thanks for Deb Roehrer, Mary-Esther Arthur, Chris Snyder, Irene Williams, Marty
Stanton, Pat Hodde, Guy Baskinger, Tom Snyder, Bob Ward, Mesrob Odian, Rich Dobson,
Mike Roehrer, Ian Witthoeft , Julie Dolci, Herb Grieshaber, Liana Witthoeft, Guy Baskinger,
and Family Carpet for their amazing work on the carpet installation; for Dale Wilhelm for her
coffee hour coordination; for Mike Roehrer, for his hard work coordinating buildings and
grounds maintenance; and for the Grocery Card sellers and their credit card support team.
David noted that he would be away 3 Sundays this summer: June 26, with The Rev. Dr. Shane
Phelan, COM preaching and presiding at both services; July 3, with Christine Rudolphi at 8:00
AM and John Simonelli at 9:30 AM leading morning prayer and Doris Snyder preaching at
both services; and August 21, with John Simonelli preaching at both morning prayer services.
He also noted that some parish members who belong to the LGBT population are forming a
Pride Group to discuss possible activities.
We reviewed and approved the Treasurer’s report for May.
Julie Dolci, reporting for the Property Committee, noted the new carpeting and altar gate lock,
and added that they are slowly working down their ‘to do list’. Contd/

Report from July 17 Forum on “Violence”
Dear Friends
In the many articles I’ve read over the past few weeks I was particularly struck by the title of
one of them—”It’s okay to not be okay.”
In the almost 15 years since 9/11 we’ve been witnesses to act after act of senseless violence—
on our streets, yes, but also in the workplace, in our schools, in our places of worship, in our
theaters and places of recreation—in short, all the places we used to consider ‘safe’. And these
acts have targeted and affected every segment of our population—men, women and children,
black, white and Hispanic, straight and gay.
Many of these acts seemed random—or so we chose to believe—but now that no longer seems
to be the case - and we only have to look at what’s been happening in Europe to know that
this is so. And hearing about this and reading about this day after day, over and over again, is
bound to have an effect on each of us, making us feel both fearful and powerless.
This forum gave those who attended the opportunity to express what’s been on our minds and
in our hearts in a safe and non-judgmental environment. There is no right or wrong way to feel
and we were encouraged to speak about our response to bigotry and violence and we shared
our own stories.
In the narthex are handouts, one from our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, on the church’s
role in today’s troubled times and the other from our Diocesan Bishop, Mark Beckwith, in
which he offers ideas where we as individuals might make a difference.

At our Diocesan Convention last January, Bishop Beckwith invited our congregations and diocesan leaders to join in re-imagining how we all might better discern where the Spirit is leading us in our neighborhoods and communities. Since then individuals and congregations from all over the diocese have been engaged in this journey in a variety of ways. We are very eager to share our experiences with you. We're inviting all lay people and clergy from every congregation to attend one of three gatherings this September, so we can update you on the journey thus far and listen to your feedback and ideas.
These meetings will be held: Thursday, September 8, 6:30-8:30 PM at St. Elizabeth's Church in Ridgewood
Tuesday, September 13, 6:30-8:30 PM at Episcopal House in Newark
Saturday, September 17, 9:30-11:30 AM at Church of the Saviour in Denville
We believe this is God's call for us - to be actively engaged where the Spirit of God is already at work so that we might see our future, not primarily as an institution, but as vital, thriving communities that work for the common good of God's people in our local areas. We encourage all our congregations to be with us on this journey.
God is up to something. Let's find out together.

CELEBRATE! We have a new carpet in the Sanctuary.
There were so many parts of this Adopt-a-Project to result in our celebration!
The very generous anonymous gift followed by a secondary donation.
The many meetings Mike Roehrer and Irene Williams had with the owner of
Family Carpet.
The parishioners who made ready the church for the installation—Mary-Esther Arther, Guy
Baskinger, Rich Dobson, Julie Dolci, Pat Hodde, Mike Roehrer, Chris Snyder, Marty
Stanton, Bob Ward, Ian and Liana Witthoeft.
The special care and expertise of Guy, Mike and Ian in moving the organ, piano and sound
apparatus.
The hours Mike spent addressing the issues involved with removing the bolts holding the
altar rail and those holding the choir and first pews.
Julie and Irene scrubbing the floor between the pews before and after the installation.
Hands-and-knees work—bless you!
The twelve hours— 7 am to 7 pm—Julie, Mike and Irene spent keeping watch over the
actual installation.
The time Guy, Mike and Ian spent that same evening putting the organ, piano and sound
system back in place.
The hours Mike worked bolting down the altar rail and pews, properly this time.
A VERY special thank-you to installers Lou, his son, and Mike! Not only did they do a very
professional installation but they graciously returned the choir pews, altar, altar benches and
kneelers, rector bench and kneeler, lectern and altar rail to their proper positions.
