Computer Sciences Annual Report 2017

FOREWARD BY THE DEAN

I would like to express my thanks for being given the opportunity to deliver the welcoming note

for our School’s 2017 annual report. It is a great pleasure to welcome you to another edition of

the Annual Report of the School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

The various accomplishments and achievements as highlighted in this report have shown again

that the school has performed quite well in most, if not all areas during 2017, both on the local and international levels. The school

has shown marked improvements in various areas such as research and innovation, teaching, supervision, publications, and industry

and community engagement in order to be in line with both the university’s and school’s mission and vision. This was also evident in

the Computer Sciences’ improvement to the top 100 universities within the subject rankings for the year 2017 as stated by the QS

University Rankings. All of these achievements would not have been possible without the continuous commitment and support from

every member of the school. Thank you all for your commitment.

The trust from the university’s top management is also a crucial element in the success of the school. I would therefore like to

extend my sincerest thanks to the university’s management aptly led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail.

I strongly believe that this annual report will be beneficial to our future students and the public seeking the latest information on

academic, research and other activities within our school. It is my hope that this annual report will assist in disseminating richer and

more complete information on our existing research and researchers in the School. This will also be beneficial to those aspiring to

undertake a research collaboration or even register as a graduate student at SoCS.

Again, I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the editorial board members and all those involved for their tireless effort and

dedication in producing this report.

Thank you.

Prof. Ahamad Tajuddin Khader Dean School of Computer Sciences

Computer Sciences Annual Report 2017

INTRODUCTION

The School of Computer Sciences was established officially on the 1st of March 1995 after functioning for a period of 20 years as the Division of Computer Science, an independent and autonomous unit within the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The period has witnessed various developments, advances, and achievements of computer science pertaining to the academic programmes, research and development, consultancy, community services and others. The school is now in a leading position as far as research and development activities are concerned and are gearing up its efforts to meet new challenges of research and development by restructuring our research activities in line with the emerging trend of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.

The school has been maintaining strong and strategic linkages with the industry. Formal and informal events

have been organised to exchange ideas that benefit the curriculum and the industry. The school has been

involved in various joint projects with all types of industries supported by the national and international

grants. The school has also been involved in consultancies, particularly in software system developments.

From those activities, the income generation for 2017 amounted RM2,600,022.00.

In terms of global partners, the school has always maintained strong and strategic linkages with universities in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore and the Middle East. These smart partnerships include long-standing research collaborations with several French universities on natural language processing, distributed computing and artificial intelligence. The joint supervision of postgraduate students is made possible through such linkages. Over the next decade, the School of Computer Sciences will continue its efforts to strengthen its curriculum and at the same time explore research areas that contribute to the development of the nation.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME: POSTGRADUATE

Postgraduate Programme

Currently School of Computer Sciiences offers two modes of study for the postgraduate programmes, that is by Mixed Mode (a combination of coursework and research) and by Research. For 2017/2018 academic year, the school had enrolled 323 students included 123 international students under the programme.

Mixed mode programme - Master of Science (Computer Science)

This programme started as a coursework programme offered in the 1996/97 academic years. It had been suitably

revised in the 2001/02 academic years and subsequently in the 2007/08 academic years it was offered as a mixed mode

programme.

The objectives of the MSc (CS) curriculum include equipping postgraduates with:

• A solid foundation in the field of Computer Science. • An understanding of innovative computer technologies. • The ability to relate various Computer Science disciplines, concepts and practices. • The capability to translate their knowledge and skills to industry needs. • The skills and motivation to pursue a doctoral programme.

Mixed mode programme - Master of Informatics (M.Informatics)

In 2014, the school introduced new programme, which is the Master of Informatics (M.Informatics) by coursework

replacing Master of Science (Information Technology Technopreneurship). The objectives of this programme are:

∑ To develop and produce graduates with an in-depth understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of informatics and of their inter-relationships;

∑ To produce graduates who are equipped with knowledge and skill in scientific, engineering and advance analysis of ICT which can be applied in jobs across various fields/sectors especially in business, technopreneurship and biomedical sectors;

∑ And to produce more ICT power users in various industrial fields such as biomedical, healthcare, marketing, business and others.

Research programme - PhD. & M.Sc. by Research

A research degree is awarded primarily on the basis of a thesis embodying the results of a research project and any

coursework topics (when necessary) or other formal studies required by the University and School of Computer Sciences

to be undertaken during the candidature.

The degree can be pursued under the supervision of at least one academic staff of the School. Under this mode of study,

the candidate is required to complete a thesis within a stipulated time period. Usually, full-time candidates for M.Sc.

complete their theses in 12 – 18 months and for PhD. in 30 – 40 months.
