Who we are

M&G has been helping people to prosper by putting their investments to work for more than 85 years .

What do we do, and who are our customers?

Investment management plays a really important role in our society and the financial system .

By investing our customers’ money in the economy, we provide funds for businesses who want to grow, funds to pay for long term infrastructure projects, and funds to build new homes and communities .

One of the ways we do this is by managing pension savings on behalf of businesses and local authorities, which have some five million pension scheme members between them . Another big group of customers for us are the Prudential with-profits and annuity policy holders, on whose behalf we manage over £100 billion of assets .

We also manage money for individual customers . Some of these choose to invest in our funds directly with us, and some use an independent financial adviser, stockbroker, bank, or online fund platform to invest . Individual customers invest in one or more of M&G’s pooled funds (also known as mutual funds or unit trusts) .

Understanding investmentsWhat do we invest in?

M&G’s scale, and the skills and experience of our people, mean that we can invest in a wide variety of assets, including publicly listed equities and bonds, as well as specialist and alternative assets such as real estate, private equity and private debt .

Cash offers very little potential for growth or income . However, it can be the most secure place for your money as the Financial Services Compensation Scheme will pay compensation up to £85000 if your bank or building society becomes insolvent .

Bonds may be appealing if you need a regular income or are just looking for a lower-risk place to store your savings that still has more growth potential than cash .

Equities can be right for you if you are comfortable with the idea that the potential for strong growth also comes with the possibility for greater losses .

Property offers an attractive combination of a regular income and some potential for growth, particularly if you invest in a fund that buys property directly .

The value of investments will fluctuate, which will cause prices to fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount you invested .

Responsible investingMost M&G customers are saving and investing for the long term – so they value the responsible, active, long-term approach we take to the assets we hold on their behalf .

When we buy shares in companies, we typically hold them for three to five years – and for some infrastructure investments, it’s as long as 30 years . Because we’re thinking about long-term investment, we also think about long term trends and challenges – such as climate change, the sustainability of natural resources, and social and demographic changes .

That’s why we believe that issues such as energy conservation, pollution and waste, health and safety, human rights and executive remuneration can be as important as analysing the balance sheet when determining whether a company is likely to be successful for many years to come .

Where we own equity in a company, we aren’t afraid to challenge the managers of these businesses if we think their environmental, social and governance policies and practices pose a risk to long-term performance, including using our vote in resolutions at a company’s annual general meeting . When we invest in fixed income securities, integrating these considerations into our research and investment processes helps us better to understand the risk to our bond investments .

M&G’s new ESG-screened bond fund

In 2017, we launched a new product for investors who want to invest in high-yielding bonds, but who also want to know that the investments have been made according to very clear responsible investing criteria . For example, the fund automatically excludes companies in sectors including tobacco, gaming, thermal coal, defence, weapons, alcohol or adult entertainment, and also excludes companies outside these sectors which have poor ESG performance compared to their peers .

The difference we makeInvesting in public infrastructure

Investment by M&G and Prudential customers provided funds to build the brand new Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in the Park in Liverpool . Designed around the needs of its patients and their families, it’s now a world leader in children’s healthcare .

Investing in new homes

With our investors’ money, M&G designed and built the Rehearsal Rooms, a community of apartments which is helping tackle the shortage of good quality homes for rental in West London .

Investing in economic infrastructure

M&G’s specialist infrastructure equity team provided the funds needed by Gigaclear, a fast-growing fibre broadband company, to help it bring ultrafast internet to rural communities .

Investing in new jobs

Investment from four of M&G’s retail bond funds has helped finance Aston Martin’s growth, including the construction of a new car factory in St Athan, South Wales, which will create several hundred new skilled jobs .

Investing in social housing

M&G customers provided £50 million to the United Welsh housing association, helping it to fund the construction of 600 affordable homes in South Wales .

Our newest employee network, Enable wants people to feel comfortable talking about disabilities . We aim to make M&G Prudential more accessible customers and stakeholders, and to be an outstanding employer in our industry for people with disabilities .

Once you join M&G, there are lots of affinity networks to join too, which celebrate and support our diversity .

In 2014 we launched our successful LGBT networks, M&G Pride and Pride Allies, which help us create an environment where everyone feels able to bring their full self to work .

Giving back to the communityEveryone at M&G is encouraged to play their part in creating an environment for enterprise, prosperity and the improved well-being of our communities in the countries where we operate .

We launched the Staff Charity Fund in 1992 to support smaller charities that would otherwise struggle to achieve funding, and charities closely connected to M&G staff or its offices . The fund is financed solely through the generosity of M&G staff who choose to make monthly donations through the Give As You Earn Scheme .

Training and Support

All graduates will undergo a robust training programme which includes technical qualifications (such as the Investment Management Certificate) before entering the business as well as further development initiatives throughout the scheme . As a graduate at M&G every day is different, you are constantly learning and developing your own skills . Dependant on the programme you join you will rotate around various business areas or within your department . This allows you to get a taste for a number of areas, build networks and inform your future career decisions .

What we are looking for

In our graduate and intern students we are looking for people who demonstrate energy, originality and conviction with a passion that relates to their chosen scheme; be that business, technology or financial markets . Confidence in your own abilities and decision making is important and we look for those who can utilise this within a team .

We seek people from multiple degree disciplines; a finance-related degree is not necessary for a career in investment management . We have an eye on the future and are interested in your skill base rather than your current knowledge base . We can teach you all you need to know .

Internships

Whatever your interest, there is place for you to grow here.

From day one you are given the opportunity to take on real work and really make an impact . Our summer internships are designed to develop your skills and interests through an inclusive training programme and on-the-job guidance .

What to expect

You will spend your summer in a chosen business area where you will be given opportunities to make an active contribution to the team whilst gaining an insight into what life at M&G is really like .

During your first few weeks you will go through a comprehensive training programme which has been specifically designed for those with and without industry knowledge . Alongside this you will have additional guidance from your buddy, mentor and team throughout your internship .

There are also plenty of opportunities to join internship social events throughout the programme . Networking lunches, evening drinks and fun events, along with other team-specific socials generally keep our students very busy!

We expect our interns to get involved in M&G life from the beginning, be that supporting volunteering projects, participation in our inclusive networks, active team involvement or fundraising for a supported charity .

From Intern to Graduate

As an intern you will go through the same recruitment process as a graduate as we see you as future talent . If you are successful over your internship we will fast track you for our graduate scheme to start the following year .

Apprentices

We look for highly motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated school leavers to join our Apprenticeship programme . This programme is designed to help people without degrees start their careers straight after school/college and earn a competitive salary whilst receiving on the job training .

You will be offered a permanent position in the business, which begins with 12-18 months on the Apprenticeship Programme . During this time, you will work towards relevant industry recognised qualifications such as Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) or Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) . This opportunity will enable you to develop a wide range of skills and competencies by interacting with people across the business at all levels .

Active ManagementA type of investment approach employed to generate returns in excess of the market .

AssetAny item of economic or financial vales owned by someone or a company .

BondA debt investment ie a loan, in the form of a security, usually issued by a government or company . These normally pay a fixed rate of interest over a given time period, and at the end of which the initial amount borrowed is repaid .

CashLegal tender or coins that can be used in exchange goods, debt, or services . Sometimes cash can also include the value of assets that can be converted into cash immediately, as reported by a company .

DividendA portion of company net profits paid out to shareholders .

EquityShare of ownership in a company .

Financial Conduct AuthorityThe conduct regulator for 56,000 financial services firms and financial markets in the UK .

Fixed income investmentAn investment that provides a return in the form of fixed periodic interest payments over a given time period, and the eventual repayment of the initial investment at maturity .
