JOE McPHEE
I met Joe in the late ‘60s when change was in the air. Revolution! Black Power! Black Music! Joe was teaching an adjunct class for Vas-sar College on black music, play-ing when and wherever he could, and slowly having his soul eroded working for a local manufacturer. He had just recorded his first LP for CJR, Underground Railroad and played on Clifford Thornton’s ‘Freedom and Unity’. Obviously ra-cially aware, for him it was always a positive force, never negative or exclusionary. He was a fixture in the Sunday jams on Poughkeep-sie’s lower Main Street, and would play with anyone who showed. And I do mean with: no battles, just music. My introduction to a couple of his dominant traits, an absolute fearlessness and a commitment to making music. He would, and will, play with anybody, anywhere. Solo? “Sure, I’ll stand up there alone, tear myself open, and blow you away.” And one night, maybe mid-‘80s, in a concert in a Seattle suburb, we watched him play a duet with himself, blowing into an
open grand piano and respond-ing to the harmonics it produced. Absofreakinlutely fearless. And breathtakingly beautiful. In the mid ‘70s he discovered Europe, and Europe discovered him. He’s gone from worrying about cramming ev-erything into an unreliable car to worrying about airline schedules. Budapest, Lisbon, London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Lithu-ania, and dozens of towns and villages you’ve never heard of. Steve Lacy, Jimmy Guiffre, Ray-

mond Boni, André Jaume, Michael Bisio, and hundreds you’ve never heard of. Anyone, anywhere. Has he changed over time? Sure, but always with a firm voice, his own. And always, always making music.

Freedom for sale
Why are we asked to sell our freedom for Security? Why now? When were we taught to fear freedom? Yet kill or die in freedom’s name in some foreign land?
Is Our Freedom For Sale?
Freedom used to have a ring to it -Like when women won the right to vote- Or when ‘we shall overcome’ rang out and Black-America stood up and faced prison - or death - for what was their right. When Chinese-Americans won the right to run more than a Laundromat. And Japanese-Americans finally came back from internment camps.Where Native Americans / the first Americans - were no longer hunted down - but hard won – a few of the rights that others take for granted. Some stood up in the face of fear and choose Freedom. And Freedom felt more exhilarating than the first day of summer. Then Freedom had a Ring to it -And music rang out with power and insistence…Like Justice for All – pnparker
