Head in the clouds

These rising plumes of Cumulus and Cumulonimbus clouds were snapped by pilot Ron Engels as he flew over Brazil. They are as dangerous as the smouldering battlefield they evoke, containing violent drafts of air that can easily flip a plane.

Altocumulus lenticularis or lenticular clouds are often mistaken for Unidentified Flying Objects because of their lens-like forms, but in this image taken by Philippe Villette in the French Pyrenees, the cloud bears a striking resemblance to a soaring bird of prey

Kamila Mazurkiewicz captured this mesmeric shot of rare Mammatus clouds forming beneath an anvil canopy in Pulawy, Poland. These pendulous forms are unusual examples of clouds that form in sinking air and are often associated with storms.
