Visible Body
Kimbel Library’s Visible Body database consists of animated 3D images and videos relating to different
systems of the human body. To access this database, go to the library’s website at coastal.edu/library
and click the Database Finder link beneath the Discover search box.
From there, you have two options. You can either click the “V” (for Visible Body) at the top of the page,
and then scroll down to the Visible Body database, or, back on the Database Finder page, click the
Biology link or the Exercise and Sport link and then scroll down to the bottom of the page for the Visible
Body database.
Click the Visible Body link to access the database and, just be aware that if you’re off campus, you’ll be
prompted to enter your Coastal username and password to access it.
Click the module you’d like to view at the bottom of the page.
Depending on which browser you’re in, you’ll see either one or two launch options: Launch WebGL will
launch the database from Firefox, Chrome, and Safari v. 8 or higher. Launch Web Player will launch the
database from Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari v. 7 or lower. Note that if you have an older
computer or a mobile device, you may have trouble launching the database modules. I’ve found that the
combination of Firefox and Web Player work best when viewing on an older computer. Be aware that
you will be prompted to download Unity Player the first time you use the Web Player. The database may
take a minute or two to load because 3D images and videos are such large files. However, once the
database loads, you should be able to click within it without any trouble or delays.
Once the database has loaded, you’ll see some different options (and of course these options will
change depending on what module you’re viewing). In the Muscle Premium module, which we’re
viewing now, you can click anatomy or actions or any one of these other topics.
In the anatomy section, choose your preferred region from the drop down menu at the top of the page.
You can enlarge the image, move the body with your mouse, or use the joystick to move the body. Click
the pins to see attachments. In addition, you can click a part of the body to see the name, learn the
pronunciation, and read the definition. Beneath the definition are links to see the muscle movements.
You can click them, or you can click the “Actions” link on the module homepage or at the bottom of this
anatomy page.
Once you have selected a region, you’ll see the muscle movement. Press pause to stop it. Again, you can
highlight the region you’re interested in and view the name, pronunciation, and definition at the top of
the page. You can again move the body with your cursor or the joystick, or choose different views from
the options on the left. You should always see four angles. If you don’t, click the “more” option at the
bottom of the page and choose “Hide Joystick” to see all four views.
Keep in mind that the layouts for each module are slightly different so sometimes, instead of a
dropdown menu, you’ll see tabs or circles on the left hand side of the page.
Please don’t hesitate to ask for help if you have any questions about this database or if you run into any
technical problems. Phone, text, chat and email information for Kimbel Library can be found at
