    About Viscri

Deep in the heart ofTransylvania lies a village of such beauty to be worthy of theUNESCO World Heritage title. With its German influences and candid inhabitants, youwill feel at home.

Viscri is best known for its highly fortified church, originally built around 1100 AD bythe Szecklers. In 1185 the church was taken over by Saxon colonists, and the Szecklers

were forced to settle in southeast Transylvania. In the 14th century the eastern part of thechurch was rebuilt and in 1525, the first fortifications with towers were added. In the18th century the church was enclosed by a second defense wall. Next to the church acemetery with gravestones dating back to the Bjielo-Brdo culture is found.

The strong Saxon community which resisted with obstinacy so many barbarian attacksalong the centuries had finally succumbed to the numerous afflictions brought on themby the communist regime. Shortly following the 1989 revolution, in a matter of months, the large majority of families left the village to return in the Western Europe after a stayof 900 years.

However, few of them found the clash of cultures irreconcilable and decided to remain

and fight to preserve the rich heritage embedded in their parents land. Their efforts havebeen generously sustained by a well-known English royalty, HRH Prince Charles of

    About Viscri 125

We are a young couple that, charmed by this picturesque land, decided to change thehectic life of Bucharest and the long office hours of corporate life for the serenity of

country living. In 2007, when we acquired it, the house no 125 had been degraded bymore than 15 years of abandonment.

The buildings, sensitively restored and converted into guesthouses for tourists, wereinaugurated in 2011. They remain in keeping with the surrounding architecture and offercomfortable and spacious rooms, plus an apartment (the original house) adorned with

Transylvanian antiques. All rooms have private bathrooms equipped with modernshowers or bathtubs. The apartment consists of two rooms decorated with originalfurniture and serviced by a common bathroom.

The large barn closing the courtyard was transformed into an impressive open space, blending original wooden structure with modern elements that create a warm andcomfortable atmosphere. Here you will find our restaurant with its beautiful kitchenwhich we like sharing during gourmet or traditional cooking classes. The restaurant alsohas a generous deck facing the intensely green backyards and the vegetable garden.

This year we will inaugurate a newly renovated house, no 68, right next to the fortifiedchurch. Surrounded by orchards, the house offers complete intimacy. It is most suitable

for families or small groups of friends, consisting of one large room with own kitchenand private bathroom and a second room with private bathroom.
